Which fuel should you look for?
Portable Mixed Fuel is the fuel used for vehicles; the item reference says one unit adds 100 fuel to a vehicle. Barreled Premium Fuel is a separate product made by refining Portable Mixed Fuel. It is not the item to prioritize for a vehicle top-up.
For an immediate supply, try wrecked cars or Workshop Defense. For a steady supply, use the pump-to-refinery production chain.
How to find Portable Mixed Fuel quickly
Search wrecked cars
Check wrecks, including cars along smaller roads, and interact with those that can be looted. The community wiki reports a range of 1–4 Portable Mixed Fuel from a lootable car, but not every car is lootable and the range is not a guaranteed drop. Once Human Wiki: Portable Mixed Fuel

Take Workshop Defense rewards

Check the Supplies Workbench, if enabled
A third-party game database lists an alternate Supplies Workbench recipe of 2 Coarse Fiber, 5 Charcoal, and 2 Rawhide. It also warns that recipe options depend on scenario and server settings. How to produce fuel from crude oil
- Find a suitable territory location. Place your territory where the Water Pump’s regional output options include Barreled Crude Oil. Oil fields are identified as a source of pumped crude, but a complete current map of oil-field locations for every scenario and server is not established. Once Human Wiki: Barreled Crude Oil
- Build, power, and configure a Water Pump. Select Barreled Crude Oil if it appears among the pump’s available outputs. In its Version 1.5.1 announcement of April 21, 2025, Once Human says pump outputs depend on resources in the current region. Once Human Version 1.5.1 update announcement
- Build and power a Refining Facility. Choose the Portable Mixed Fuel conversion in the facility’s list, then connect the pump and refinery if you want to automate transfer. - Check the output and recipe on your server. Facility conversions and available pump outputs are shown in game; confirm them before committing materials, especially if you are using a Large Refinery Facility or playing a scenario with different settings.
Refinery recipes and production trade-offs
The following quantities and times are reported by a community refinery reference, not verified as universal current values. Check the conversion list and timer in your facility before starting a batch. Once Human Wiki: Refining Facility

The large-facility recipe makes Barreled Premium Fuel less costly in Portable Mixed Fuel than the small-facility recipe, but it still consumes fuel you could use in vehicles. Produce premium fuel only when that separate output is what you need. The Acid input is also reported for the Large Refinery Facility; confirm it appears in your conversion list before planning around it.
How to choose a route
- Need a small amount now: search lootable wrecked cars; the reported yield is limited and not guaranteed.
- Prefer an activity reward: try Workshop Defense when it is available to you.
- Want recurring production: establish a territory where the pump offers Barreled Crude Oil, then power and connect a refinery.
- Have access to a Large Refinery Facility: compare its displayed timer and inputs with the Small Refinery Facility before committing crude, Acid, or Portable Mixed Fuel.
- Need Barreled Premium Fuel: compare the conversion cost with your vehicle-fuel needs first.
What can change between servers?
Once Human’s Version 1.5.1 update, dated April 21, 2025, documents selectable pump outputs based on regional resources, refinery conversion lists, pump connections, and Water Tank storage for Barreled Crude Oil, Portable Mixed Fuel, and Barreled Premium Fuel. Those interface and automation features do not establish that every region offers crude oil or that every server has identical recipes.
The Version 2.3.8 announcement, dated May 13, 2026, says Petroleum Process and other technology nodes can be unlocked on supported electric furnace variants. That update does not itself establish a new Portable Mixed Fuel recipe. Check your current technology and crafting interfaces for options available in your scenario.
