For a dedicated Java server, open the server’s own folder and then crash-reports. The report you need normally has a name such as crash-2026-10-14_21.37.05-server.txt. For a client or local installation, open the game or launcher instance directory and its crash-reports folder instead.

Start reading at ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----, then work through the exception, the deepest useful Caused by: section, the stack trace, and -- System Details --. If there is no report, inspect logs/latest.log and look for an hs_err_pid#####.log file, which can indicate a JVM-level failure.

Where Minecraft stores server crash reports
A crash report is saved alongside the server installation, not necessarily in the folder where you installed the launcher. The key distinction is whether you are troubleshooting a dedicated server or a client/local game instance.
Dedicated Java server
Stop looking in your personal .minecraft folder first. Open the directory that contains the server’s launch files, such as the server JAR, eula.txt, server.properties, world, mods, and logs. Inside that same directory should be crash-reports. Fabric’s server documentation describes the location this way: “If you are using a server, they are stored in the crash-reports folder in the server directory.”

A report generated by a dedicated server normally ends in -server.txt. If the server is modded, the folder still belongs to the server instance that actually crashed; copying a report from a client installation can send helpers in the wrong direction.
Client or local installation
When the crash occurred in the game client, a single-player world, or a locally launched instance, use the game directory for that installation and open its crash-reports subfolder. The standard Java Edition locations are:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Operating system | Default crash-report folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %appdata%.minecraftcrash-reports |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/crash-reports |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/crash-reports |
These are defaults for a standard Java Edition installation. A launcher can assign each profile its own instance directory, so a report may be under that profile rather than the global folder. A server host can also place each server in a panel-managed directory that is exposed through a web file manager instead of your computer’s filesystem.
When the default folder is empty or missing
- Confirm that you opened the directory for the instance that failed. Modded profiles often have separate folders even when they use the same game version.
- Check the launcher’s instance settings for a custom game directory, profile directory, or server path.
- For a hosted server, use the provider’s file manager and open the server root, then
crash-reportsandlogs. - Sort the directory by modified time. A report can be easy to miss when several instances share similar names.
Do not create a blank crash-reports directory and assume it will contain an old failure. The directory is populated only when Minecraft successfully writes a crash report for that event.
How to select the right report
Crash files normally follow the pattern crash-yyyy-mm-dd_hh.mm.ss-(client/server).txt. The timestamp uses the machine’s local clock. Match it to the moment the server stopped responding, and check the suffix so you do not confuse a client failure with a server failure.

Read the report in the order that matters
A crash report is a snapshot of the failing process. It gives strong clues about the path that failed, but a name appearing in the trace is not automatically proof that the named mod or library is the root cause.
1. Start at the crash header
Find ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----. The opening block normally includes the crash time, a short description, the exception, and the beginning of the stack trace. Read this section before jumping to the bottom or searching the file for a mod name. The first description often distinguishes a rendering problem, a ticking failure, a missing registry entry, or a failure during startup.
2. Identify the exception type and message
The exception class categorizes the failure. For example:
| Example | Typical implication | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
ClassNotFoundException |
Code expected a class that is not available to the running class path. | Missing mod, missing dependency, wrong loader, or an incomplete installation. |
NoSuchMethodError |
Compiled code called a method that the loaded version does not provide. | Incompatible Minecraft, loader, API, or mod versions; duplicate or stale JARs. |
| Invalid registry or resource message | A block, item, registry entry, tag, or resource could not be resolved as expected. | Mod compatibility, removed content, malformed data, or a world that references unavailable content. |
Treat the message as a lead, not a verdict. Compare it with the versions and files actually installed on the server.

3. Follow the meaningful stack trace
Read downward from the first useful Caused by: block and note package names, loader classes, mixin names, and mod IDs. The deepest cause that still identifies a relevant operation is often more useful than the first line of the trace. A loader or library can appear because it was executing code supplied by another mod; that is why the first recognizable library name is not conclusive by itself.
Look for repeated names. If the same mod ID or package appears in the exception message, a mixin entry, and several nearby frames, it deserves priority for version and dependency checks. If only a generic Java or loader class appears, use the surrounding operation, timing, and log messages to narrow the cause.
4. Check -- System Details --
Record the operating system, Java version, Minecraft version, loader version, and allocated memory shown there. These values provide the environment needed to reproduce the failure. A mod built for a different game or loader version can fail even when its JAR is present; an unsupported Java runtime can produce errors that look like mod problems; and an undersized allocation can cause memory-related failures without naming a single bad mod.
Write down the values exactly as displayed, including loader build numbers and Java major version. “Java 17” and “Java 21,” for example, are not interchangeable requirements for every Minecraft version or mod set.
5. Use contextual sections only when they fit the event
Some reports contain sections such as -- Last Reload --. Give those sections priority when the crash happened during a resource reload, datapack reload, or a related command. If the server failed before startup, while loading a world, or during a player tick, the main header and stack trace usually carry more diagnostic value than a reload snapshot.

A practical diagnosis workflow
Use this process after you have located the file. It keeps the investigation attributable and protects the world from unnecessary changes.
- Stop the server cleanly if possible. Do not repeatedly restart a failing instance while you are still collecting evidence. Copy the complete report and the relevant log before changing files.
- Classify when it failed. Decide whether the event occurred during startup, world loading, normal ticking, a player joining, a command or reload, or shutdown. Timing eliminates many unrelated possibilities.
- Read the exception and deepest useful cause. Copy the exception class, its message, and the most informative
Caused by:block into your notes. - Mark every identifying name. Note mod IDs, package names, mixins, loader classes, Minecraft version, loader version, Java version, and memory allocation.
- Compare the report with the real installation. Open the server’s
modsdirectory and check that each named mod is present at the expected version. Check required dependencies and remove duplicate JARs only after making a backup. - Inspect
logs/latest.log. Read the lines immediately before the crash timestamp. Warnings during mod discovery, registry setup, world loading, or player connection can explain an otherwise generic exception. - Change one variable at a time. On a copy of the server, update, remove, or downgrade one implicated mod or dependency, then reproduce the same action. If you change five mods at once, you cannot tell which change mattered.
- Protect world data. If the trace points to a world, chunk, entity, or saved data, restore a backup or test the world on a duplicate before deleting region files or making other destructive edits.
- Compare clean and affected cases. A failure that follows the mod set on a fresh test world suggests compatibility or configuration trouble. A failure limited to one world or chunk points more strongly toward data corruption or content that world contains.
How to work out which mod caused the crash
There is rarely a single line that says “this mod is guilty.” Use several independent clues and rank them together.

|---|---|---|
| Mod ID in the exception or a nearby mixin frame | Strong lead that the mod’s code was on the failing path. | Verify its version, dependencies, and compatibility with the installed loader and Minecraft release. |
| Loader or API package named repeatedly | Could indicate a loader problem or a mod calling the loader incorrectly. | Compare all mods against the exact loader/API build; do not blame the loader without testing the mod set. |
NoSuchMethodError after an update |
Often indicates two components were built against different APIs. | Align Minecraft, loader, API, and the implicated mod versions; remove duplicate older JARs. |
| Registry, resource, or missing-content error while loading one world | May involve a mod, a removed dependency, or saved world data. | Test a backup and a fresh world separately before altering the live world. |
| Crash only when a player joins or performs one action | Points toward the player’s loaded chunk, entity, item, capability, or a server-side event. | Check the log around the join/action and reproduce with a controlled test account or copy. |
| Crash during startup before a world is selected | More consistent with installation, dependency, configuration, or version incompatibility. | Validate the mod directory and loader/runtime versions first. |
Use the stack trace as evidence of the failing path, not as a guarantee of the original trigger. For example, a loader method may be the place where an incompatible mod finally throws an error. Corroboration from the exception, package names, timing, and latest.log makes an attribution more reliable.
What to do when there is no crash report
Read the complete runtime log
A crash report summarizes crash information; it is not the complete runtime history. Open the server’s logs/latest.log for the most recent run and search around the final timestamp. Include warnings and errors immediately before the process stopped, not just the final line. The preceding messages often show which mod was loading a registry, reading a configuration, or handling a world event before the generic failure appeared.
Look for a JVM fatal-error file
If the Java virtual machine itself failed, Minecraft may not have been able to create a normal report. Look in the game or server directory for a file named like hs_err_pid#####.log. Preserve it with latest.log; the JVM file can contain native-thread, memory, or runtime details unavailable in a Minecraft report.

Consider abrupt termination
- A power loss, operating-system kill, host restart, or forced process termination can leave no orderly report.
- A hosting panel may display the useful error in its console while writing files to a location different from the visible server root.
- A full disk or permission problem can prevent Minecraft from writing the report even though the crash occurred.
- A server that hangs rather than throws an exception may require the final section of
latest.log, a host console transcript, or a JVM diagnostic rather than a crash report.
Do not infer that “no report” means “no error.” It means the normal report-writing path did not produce a file you can access.
How to prepare a useful support request
Support helpers need enough context to reproduce the failure and enough formatting to read the trace. Send the complete crash report in a code-preserving paste, plus:
- Minecraft version.
- Loader and loader version: vanilla, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
- Java version shown by the server or report.
- Server type and how it was launched.
- The complete mod list with versions, especially dependencies named in the trace.
- The relevant
latest.logexcerpt around the crash timestamp. - What was happening: startup, world loading, ticking, player join, reload, command, or shutdown.
- Whether the failure occurs in every world or only one copy, chunk, or action.
Preserve line breaks and indentation. A screenshot can hide long package names and makes searching difficult. Remove account names, private filesystem paths, IP addresses, and authentication tokens when they are not needed, but do not delete the exception, stack trace, version information, or nearby log lines.
Recovery choices by failure pattern
Startup failure
Keep the original instance untouched, make a copy, and first align Minecraft, loader, Java, mods, and dependencies. Remove or update only the component supported by the trace, then test the copy. If the copy starts, repeat the same change on the live instance only after preserving a backup.
World-loading failure
Test the same mod set with a new world. If a new world loads but the existing world does not, restore a backup or isolate the affected world data on a duplicate. Avoid deleting region or player files from the only copy.
Ticking or player-action failure
Use the timing and nearby coordinates, entity names, or package frames in the report and log to identify the operation. Reproduce it on a copy with one variable changed. A failure tied to one chunk or entity should be treated as a data problem until a clean-world test shows otherwise.
Memory or JVM failure
Use -- System Details --, latest.log, and any hs_err_pid#####.log together. Confirm the Java runtime and allocated memory before changing mods. A JVM-level failure can omit the normal Minecraft exception entirely, so replacing a mod without checking the runtime evidence may not address the cause.
