Put the preset first: Valheim states that setting a preset overwrites previous modifiers, so custom overrides must come afterward.

The same launch configuration also determines whether combat is harsher, death is more expensive, materials are scarcer, raids are disabled or intensified, portals are restricted, the map is available, and which backend crossplay uses. Because these choices affect an existing persistent world, save the world, make a backup, and tell players about high-impact rules before they join.

Valheim separates world difficulty into several independent axes. This is more useful than a single easy-to-hard switch: a group can keep normal combat while reducing resource grind, or make death severe without increasing raid frequency. The official dedicated-server settings use the following value families.

These categories are separate. Increasing Resources does not make enemies stronger, and choosing hard for DeathPenalty does not automatically change portals. Treat each setting as a deliberate rule for the group rather than assuming a general difficulty label explains every consequence.

Checkbox-style world keys
The server also exposes settings that are switched with keys rather than the value families above. The official guide documents nomap, passivemobs, nobuildcost, and playerevents. They are official game settings, not necessarily mod features.
nomapremoves normal map use, making navigation, landmarks and shared route planning a different part of play.passivemobschanges the server’s baseline by making the relevant creatures passive.nobuildcostremoves normal building material costs, creating a construction-focused ruleset.playereventscontrols the player-event setting documented by the game.
Because these keys can change the identity of a world more radically than a small resource adjustment, announce them before opening the server.

Presets and custom overrides
The documented presets are Normal, Casual, Easy, Hard, Hardcore, Immersive, and Hammer. A preset gives the world a coherent baseline. You can then override individual axes or checkbox keys in the same startup command.

The ordering rule is critical. Valheim’s documentation says, “Setting a preset will overwrite any other previous modifiers.” Therefore put -preset first, followed by every custom -modifier and -setkey that should differ from that preset. If you place the preset last, it can erase the changes you thought you had applied.
Launch-argument pattern
This is an illustrative syntax pattern, not a tested command. Check the dedicated-server manual shipped with the installed Valheim version before deploying it:
valheim_server -name "My server" -world "Dedicated" -password "UseYourOwnSecret" -preset hard -modifier resources more -modifier raids less -setkey nomapIn this example, the preset establishes the baseline, then resource income is raised, raid frequency is reduced, and the map is disabled. The argument names and value spellings must remain exactly as documented; do not substitute a natural-language value such as high for the documented more or muchmore.

How to change difficulty on a dedicated server
- Decide the world’s purpose. Choose whether this is a relaxed cooperative run, a standard progression world or a challenge world. Consider the least experienced player as well as the most experienced one.
- Choose one preset. Use a documented preset as the starting point instead of trying to recreate a complete ruleset one argument at a time.
- List the exceptions. Write down only the axes that should differ from the preset: for example,
resources more,raids noneorportals hard. - Append modifiers after the preset. Add each change as its own
-modifier category valuepair. Add checkbox-style changes with-setkey key. - Choose the connection backend. Add
-crossplaywhen players on the required platforms need the PlayFab backend. If you omit it, the Steam backend is used. - Set visibility and networking. For an invisible server that players join by IP, use
-public 0. When self-hosting, forward the configured server port and the next port (port + 1) through the router. Both must match the ports specified for the server. - Save the final command and restart. Keep a plain-text record of the exact arguments. A restart is the point at which launch settings are applied; verify the server’s startup output and have one player confirm the intended behavior in game.
Do not change several unrelated axes at once without telling the group. If the world suddenly feels punishing, players need to know whether combat, death recovery, travel or resource availability caused the friction.
Choosing values for different groups
A Normal or Casual baseline is a practical starting point for mixed-skill groups. From there, change one axis at a time so the effect is identifiable. The following patterns use the documented controls without pretending that a preset has a single universal meaning for every group.

There is no universally correct combination. A group that dislikes repetitive mining may want more resources but normal combat; a group that wants tense expeditions may prefer normal resources and harder portals. Make the smallest change that addresses the complaint.

Crossplay, visibility and port requirements
Crossplay backend
The documented -crossplay argument selects the PlayFab backend. Leaving the argument out selects the Steam backend. Decide this before distributing connection instructions: players must use the backend that matches the server’s launch configuration, and a platform-mixed group may require the crossplay option.

Public listing versus direct IP
Use -public 0 for an invisible server that players join by IP. Self-hosted servers also need router forwarding for the configured port and that port plus one. Forwarding only one of the two can leave the server unreachable even when the process is running.
Saves, backups and rollback planning
Difficulty arguments are only useful when the persistent world is protected. The official guide lists these defaults:

These are configuration defaults, not guarantees of performance or recoverability. Confirm that the host or operating system has enough disk space, identify where world and backup files are stored, and test a restoration procedure before players invest significant time. A backup that exists but cannot be located or restored is not a usable recovery plan.

The custom value appears to be ignored
Check argument order first. If -preset appears after a modifier, it can overwrite that modifier. Move the preset before all custom -modifier and -setkey arguments, then restart the server.
A value is rejected at startup
Compare the spelling with the documented families. For example, resources accept muchless, less, more, muchmore and most; they do not use the combat words easy or hard. Death penalties and portals have their own, different lists.
Players cannot connect
Confirm whether the server uses Steam or PlayFab through -crossplay, verify the server port, and check that both the port and port + 1 are forwarded when self-hosting. If the server is intentionally hidden with -public 0, provide the correct IP and port rather than expecting it to appear in a public list.
The group regrets a severe rule
Stop before making further progress, preserve the current world files, and agree on a rollback point. Restore from a known-good backup only after documenting which rule caused the problem. For future worlds, announce nomap, hardcore death rules and veryhard portals before launch; these settings can change how players prepare and recover, not merely how a single fight feels.

- Every custom modifier uses a documented category and value.
- Checkbox keys such as
nomapare intentionally announced. - Crossplay backend is chosen for the platforms in the group.
- Visibility mode, server port and port + 1 are documented and forwarded where required.
- Save interval, backup count and backup intervals are recorded.
- Disk space and a restoration path have been checked.
- Players know about any change to combat, death recovery, resources, raids or portals before joining.
Once those checks are complete, Valheim’s server settings become a controlled ruleset rather than a collection of surprises: establish a preset, override only what the group needs, and protect the world files that make the decision persistent.
