For the official Minecraft Java Launcher, open the game directory, then logs, and open latest.log. On Windows the default path is %appdata%.minecraftlogslatest.log; on macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/logs/latest.log; on Linux it is ~/.minecraft/logs/latest.log. Forge users may need debug.log, and a crash report is stored separately in crash-reports.

Find latest.log in the official launcher
Minecraft Java writes the current client session to a plain-text file named latest.log. The file is inside the game directory’s logs folder. Close Minecraft before copying it so the final lines have been written, then open the file with a text editor.

Windows
Press Windows + R, enter %appdata%.minecraftlogs, and press Enter. Open latest.log. If the folder does not exist, check that you have started the Java Edition at least once and that you are looking at the same Windows account used by the launcher.
macOS
In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder…, enter ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/logs, and press Return. Open latest.log. The Library folder is normally hidden from casual browsing, which is why entering the path directly is faster.

Linux
Open your file manager and go to ~/.minecraft/logs, or navigate there in a terminal. The leading dot in .minecraft marks the directory as hidden in many Linux file managers; enable hidden files if you browse visually.
When the default path is wrong
The paths above apply to the official launcher. Instance-based launchers and modpack applications can assign every profile its own game directory, so their logs may not be in the global .minecraft folder.
Open the folder for the exact instance
Select the profile that failed, then use its Folder, Open folder, or equivalent command. From that directory, open logs. The file you want is usually latest.log; a Forge profile may also contain debug.log. Do not copy a log from another profile, even if the profiles use the same Minecraft version, because their mods, loader versions, Java settings, and configuration files can differ.
Confirm you are looking at the active directory
- Launch the problem profile once, close it, and sort the instance’s
logsfolder by modification time. - Open the file that changed at the time of that launch.
- Check the opening lines for the Minecraft version and mod-loader information.
- If the timestamp does not match the failed attempt, return to the launcher and open the folder for the selected instance again.
Know which file to send
Several diagnostic files can exist together. They answer different questions, so sending the wrong one can hide the useful evidence.

latest.log versus older compressed logs
latest.log is overwritten for each new session. Previous sessions use the pattern yyyy-mm-dd_number.log.gz; the .gz suffix means the file is compressed. Choose the newest dated file that covers the failed launch or the moment the error occurred. Most modern operating systems can open a .gz file with a standard archive utility; extract it before opening if your text editor cannot read it directly.

Crash reports are not substitutes for the full log
A crash report focuses on the failure and includes a stack trace plus system details. The normal log contains the broader runtime history: loading messages, warnings before the failure, resource-pack activity, network events, and errors that may never appear in the crash report. When support asks for “the log,” send the relevant complete log as well as the crash report when both exist.

Find Forge’s debug.log
Forge troubleshooting commonly uses debug.log. With the official launcher, open the Forge installation’s game directory, enter logs, and look for debug.log. It is often more informative than the ordinary log for mod-loading and initialization failures.
Enable the file in CurseForge
CurseForge can leave Forge debug logging disabled. Enable it before reproducing the problem:
- Open the application and select Settings using the gear icon.
- Choose Minecraft.
- Turn on Forge debug.log.
- Save the setting.
- Launch the affected modpack again and wait for the same failure.
- Right-click the modpack and choose Open Folder.
- Open
logs/debug.login that instance directory.
Enabling the option after the failed launch does not retroactively create the missing detail. Reproduce the problem after saving the setting, then collect the newly written file.
Read a crash report in the right order
Open the newest matching file in crash-reports. The report’s first major section begins with ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----. The stack trace below that heading is the first place to look because it identifies the code path where the crash was detected.

Start with the stack trace
- Read from the first exception downward rather than jumping to the final line.
- Look for a mod name, package name, mixin, renderer, or loader component in the stack frames.
- Find a nested
Caused by:section. The deepest meaningful cause often explains the failure more precisely than the headline exception. - Note the first file or component that clearly belongs to a mod or library you recently changed.
A long report can contain many follow-on errors. Treat the first meaningful exception and its deepest Caused by: line as stronger evidence than a cascade of later messages that merely describe the aftermath.
Use the system details for configuration checks
Later sections list information such as the operating system, Java version, and memory allocated to Minecraft. Compare those values with the configuration you intended to run. A crash that looks like a mod error may instead reveal that the profile launched with a different Java runtime, game version, loader version, or memory allocation than expected.
Read latest.log or debug.log efficiently
1. Verify the file covers the failure
Begin at the top. Confirm the timestamp, Minecraft version, and loader information. If the opening lines describe a different session, locate the correct instance or dated archive before diagnosing anything.
2. Search for high-value terms
Use your editor’s search function for ERROR, Exception, Caused by:, Crash, and the ID or name of a suspect mod. Search is faster than reading thousands of routine status lines, but keep surrounding context. A single line rarely explains why the error happened.
3. Follow the first meaningful failure
Logs often record one root failure followed by many dependent failures. Start with the earliest relevant exception in time. Then follow its nested Caused by: lines to the deepest cause. For example, a generic “failed to load” message is less useful than a later line naming a missing class, incompatible version, or invalid resource.

4. Compare names and versions
Check every named mod, the Minecraft version, the loader version, and the Java version against the profile you intended to launch. A mismatch can be the explanation even when the final error names a different component. Crash-report system details are especially useful for this comparison.
5. Preserve the timeline
Do not delete warnings or unrelated-looking lines before the first exception. Startup messages can show which mod loaded immediately before the failure, and earlier warnings can explain a later crash. Keep the complete original file and create a separate excerpt only if a support volunteer specifically requests one.

No file in crash-reports does not mean there is no evidence. Use latest.log for vanilla or Fabric-based profiles, and use Forge’s debug.log when available. Forge support guidance specifically treats a debug log as useful even when Minecraft never generates a crash report.
The game closes during startup
- Reopen the instance folder and inspect the newest
latest.logordebug.log. - Search from the bottom upward for the last
ERROR,Exception, orCaused by:. - Then move upward to find the first related warning or exception.
- Check whether the named mod and loader versions match the profile.
The launcher reports a generic exit code
An exit code is only a symptom. The client log usually contains the event that caused the process to exit. Use the timestamp of the failed attempt to select the correct session file, then inspect the final block of messages and the earliest related exception.
Java crashes before Minecraft can report a crash
Look in the game or instance directory for a file named like hs_err_pidXXXXX.log. This JVM error file is separate from both latest.log and the normal crash-report folder. Keep it intact when asking for help; it records a fatal Java-level failure that Minecraft’s own reporter could not capture.

Share a log without destroying its usefulness
Support volunteers and mod developers need the surrounding context, not just the line that looks suspicious. Preserve the original formatting and upload the complete relevant file to a paste service rather than pasting a truncated block into a chat message. Fabric documentation recommends services including mclo.gs, pastes.dev, Pastebin.com, and GitHub Gist.
Prepare the right files
- For a normal client problem, provide the complete
latest.log. - For Forge, provide
debug.logwhen it was enabled, plus the crash report if one exists. - For a game crash, include the newest matching file from
crash-reports. - For a JVM failure, include
hs_err_pidXXXXX.logand the session log if one was written. - State which launcher instance produced each file and the approximate time of the failure.
Check for private information
Read the file before publishing it. Logs can contain a Windows user name in a path, a local computer name, server addresses, or other environment details. Remove genuinely sensitive values only when necessary, and mark each redaction clearly. Do not remove timestamps, exception text, mod IDs, version numbers, or the lines around the failure; those are often the evidence needed to diagnose the problem.
A practical workflow for common failure types
Mod-loading or dependency failure
Open the crash report first if one exists. Identify the first exception and deepest Caused by:, then check the named mod, dependency, Minecraft version, and loader version against the instance. If there is no report, perform the same search in latest.log or Forge’s debug.log.
Resource-pack, shader, or rendering failure
Use the full client log because the lead-up matters. Search for ERROR, Exception, and the resource or renderer name. Keep the lines immediately before the first failure; they may show which asset, shader, or graphics component was being initialized.
Connection or multiplayer problem
Use the session log rather than a crash report, since many connection failures do not crash the game. Search for the server address, connection-related exceptions, and the timestamp when the disconnect occurred. Keep the complete event sequence so the reader helping you can distinguish a failed connection, authentication problem, timeout, or later client error.

- Reproduce the problem once and note the time.
- Open the correct official-launcher path or the selected instance’s folder.
- Choose
latest.log, Forgedebug.log, the newest crash report, orhs_err_pidXXXXX.logaccording to the failure mode. - Confirm the file’s timestamp and version information match the failed session.
- Search for
ERROR,Exception,Caused by:,Crash, and relevant mod IDs. - Read the first meaningful exception and deepest cause before interpreting later cascades.
- Compare the named components with the intended Minecraft, loader, Java, and mod versions.
- Upload the complete relevant file with formatting preserved, after removing only necessary private details.
The essential distinction
latest.log is the default full-session client record. Dated .log.gz files preserve earlier sessions. A crash report in crash-reports concentrates on one game crash, while Forge’s debug.log provides extra detail when enabled. If Java itself dies, an hs_err_pidXXXXX.log file may be the only dedicated report. Selecting the file that matches the launcher instance and failure mode is the first diagnostic step; reading its earliest meaningful exception is the next.
