Start by measuring representative dynamic pages, then verify the Nginx-to-PHP-FPM path, check PHP-FPM worker saturation and slow logs, and investigate database or module delays. Add FastCGI caching only for genuinely public responses; bypass sessions, carts, checkout, accounts, authorization, and other personalized requests.

What slow TTFB means in PrestaShop
TTFB is the elapsed time between sending an HTTP request and receiving the first byte of the response. It is different from total download time. A page can deliver its first byte quickly but still take a long time to download large images or JavaScript; conversely, a small HTML document can have a poor TTFB because PHP has not finished processing it.

For a dynamic PrestaShop request, the usual sequence is Nginx accepting the connection, forwarding a PHP script to PHP-FPM, PHP loading PrestaShop and its modules, querying the database or remote services, and finally returning a response to Nginx. Delays anywhere before that response reaches Nginx increase TTFB. Browser caching and asset compression do not repair a PHP request that is waiting for a worker or a database query.
There is no authoritative universal “good” PrestaShop TTFB number. Set a target from your own baseline, page mix, geography, and business requirements. A product page for an anonymous visitor is not comparable with a personalized checkout request.

1. Establish a useful baseline before changing configuration
Measure the same URLs repeatedly and record TTFB separately from total transfer time. Use at least one anonymous product or category page, a cart request, a login page, and a checkout page. Test while the application cache is warm and after clearing or bypassing caches so you can see both paths.
Measure with curl
Run a request that prints DNS, connection, time-to-first-byte, and total time:
curl -sS -o /dev/null -w 'dns=%{time_namelookup} connect=%{time_connect} ttfb=%{time_starttransfer} total=%{time_total}\n' https://shop.example/product/example
Repeat the command several times for each URL. Keep the same protocol, host, cookies, and test location when comparing runs. If you are testing an authenticated page, use a controlled test account and record the cookies separately from anonymous measurements.
Record the conditions
- URL, HTTP method, status code, and whether the request was anonymous or authenticated.
- Warm or cold application and FastCGI cache state.
- HTTP cookies, authorization headers, and cache hit or miss status.
- PHP-FPM active and queued workers, CPU, memory, database time, and remote API time.
- Test region and network path, because geography can dominate connection time even when PHP execution is unchanged.
Do not compare a cached home page with an uncached checkout request and call the difference an Nginx performance gain. First separate waiting for PHP from downloading the response.
2. Verify the Nginx-to-PHP-FPM request path
A malformed PHP location block can cause incorrect script resolution, unnecessary filesystem work, or requests being sent to the wrong pool. PrestaShop’s documented pattern includes path splitting, a file-existence check, the standard FastCGI parameters, an explicit script filename, a PHP-FPM socket or upstream, persistent connections, and bounded read and send timeouts.
Check the effective configuration
- Run
nginx -Tand inspect the server block that actually handles the store’s hostname. Included files and a more-specific location can override the block you edited. - Confirm that the PHP location uses the intended PHP-FPM socket or upstream. A socket for a different PHP version can route traffic to an old pool or fail intermittently.
- Check the Nginx error log while requesting a PHP page. “Primary script unknown,” permission errors, upstream connection failures, and repeated timeouts identify different classes of problems.
- After edits, run
nginx -tand reload Nginx. A syntax check is not a substitute for a real request test.
Core FastCGI directives
location ~ .php$ {
fastcgi_split_path_info ^(.+.php)(/.+)$;
try_files $fastcgi_script_name =404;
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
fastcgi_keep_conn on;
fastcgi_read_timeout 30s;
fastcgi_send_timeout 30s;
}
Replace the socket with the path used by your installed PHP-FPM service, or use the configured upstream name. The try_files check prevents Nginx from passing nonexistent scripts to PHP-FPM. fastcgi_keep_conn can keep the upstream connection open for reuse. The 30-second read and send values are timeout limits, not speed settings: increasing them only makes Nginx wait longer before declaring a failure.
Recommended Free Tools
FastCGI buffering controls how Nginx stores response data in memory or temporary files. Larger buffers may be needed for unusually large headers or responses, but buffering does not make PHP execute faster. Change buffer sizes only after examining actual upstream responses and Nginx warnings.

3. Check PHP-FPM capacity and slow scripts
PHP-FPM is designed for heavily loaded sites. When every worker is busy, new requests wait in the pool queue and TTFB rises even if each individual script is reasonably fast.
Inspect pool saturation
Use the PHP-FPM status endpoint or your process supervisor’s metrics to record active processes, idle processes, and the maximum active count during a test. Also inspect service logs for messages that the pool has reached pm.max_children. PrestaShop identifies pm.max_children as the key pool setting and recommends sizing it for the concurrent users you intend to simulate.
Do not increase pm.max_children blindly. Each worker consumes memory, and additional workers can increase database contention. Estimate the memory used by a real worker under your store’s workload, reserve memory for Nginx, the operating system, and the database, then raise the limit gradually while watching swap, CPU, database connections, and response time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the PHP-FPM slow log
Enable a pool slow log with a threshold appropriate for your baseline, then reproduce a slow request. PHP-FPM’s slow log records unusually slow scripts and can include PHP backtraces. It can reveal a module hook, template operation, external API call, or database wrapper that a web-server access log cannot identify.
After enabling the log, confirm that the file is writable by the PHP-FPM service account and that log rotation is configured. Review several slow traces rather than optimizing one isolated request. Disable temporary verbose tracing when the investigation ends if it creates excessive disk I/O or exposes sensitive request data.
Interpret common pool symptoms
- Active workers at the limit and a growing queue: investigate slow scripts and size the pool for observed concurrency and available memory.
- Many idle workers but high TTFB: the delay is more likely inside the script, database, remote service, filesystem, or Nginx routing than in worker availability.
- Workers repeatedly restarting: inspect PHP-FPM and system logs for memory exhaustion, fatal errors, or process limits before raising concurrency.
4. Find application, database, and module delays
Once the FastCGI path and pool capacity are correct, profile the time spent inside PrestaShop. Slow module hooks, cache misses, expensive catalog queries, locked tables, and remote API calls can all delay the first byte.
Separate database time from PHP time
Compare PHP-FPM slow-log traces with database slow-query or performance metrics. A high database time with idle PHP workers points toward query plans, indexes, locks, or connection limits. High PHP time with fast database queries points toward module logic, template rendering, serialization, filesystem access, or a remote service called by PHP.

Audit modules and hooks
List modules that run on every front-office request, payment or shipping integrations, analytics calls, search layers, and personalization features. Temporarily disable one suspect integration in a staging or maintenance window, clear the relevant application cache, and repeat the same warm and cold measurements. Change one component at a time so an improvement can be attributed and safely rolled back.
Check external calls
A PHP script waiting for a tax, payment, inventory, shipping, or marketing API cannot send the first byte until the call returns or times out. Record DNS, connection, and response time for each remote dependency. Use bounded client timeouts and asynchronous or deferred processing where the business workflow permits; do not hide a slow dependency by simply extending Nginx’s timeout.
5. Use FastCGI caching without breaking commerce state
Nginx’s FastCGI cache can store responses in a shared cache zone and reuse them for later requests. It supports cache methods, validity periods, cache locking, stale responses, and bypass or no-cache conditions. This can substantially reduce PHP work for truly public pages, but an incorrect policy can show one customer another customer’s cart, account data, or personalized pricing.
Start with cache-safe traffic
Begin with anonymous GET and HEAD requests for pages whose output is identical for all visitors. Product and category pages may qualify only after you verify that currency, language, stock, prices, consent state, and other variations are represented correctly. Exclude POST requests and any endpoint that changes state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Bypass personalized requests
Use explicit bypass and no-cache conditions for session cookies, cart cookies, customer-account cookies, authorization headers, and any application marker indicating a logged-in or personalized response. Nginx documents authorization headers and cookies as valid no-cache conditions. Apply the same conditions both when deciding whether to read an existing cache entry and when deciding whether to store a new response.
At minimum, bypass:
- Cart and checkout pages and every endpoint that updates cart contents.
- Login, registration, password-reset, order-history, and customer-account pages.
- Requests carrying a PrestaShop session or customer cookie.
- Requests with an
Authorizationheader. - POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE requests, plus AJAX endpoints that return customer-specific data.
Prevent cache stampedes and stale surprises
Cache locking can allow one request to populate a missing entry while concurrent requests wait instead of all running the same PHP workload. Stale serving can keep a public page available during an upstream failure, but it must not override commerce correctness or display outdated prices and stock beyond your business policy. Define validity periods and stale behavior per page class, then test invalidation after product, price, stock, and configuration changes.
Verify the policy with cookies
- Request an anonymous product page twice and inspect response headers to confirm the second request is a cache hit.
- Add a normal session cookie and confirm the response bypasses the cache.
- Add a cart item, log in, and proceed through checkout while watching headers and page content.
- Change a product price or stock value, purge the relevant cache, and verify that the next anonymous request receives the new value.
Never infer cache correctness from TTFB alone. A fast response containing the wrong customer or price is a production defect.

6. Improve browser caching for static assets
Browser caching reduces repeated transfers of CSS, JavaScript, fonts, and images for returning visitors. Configure suitable Expires and Cache-Control headers for static file locations, and use versioned filenames or query strings when assets change so browsers can safely retain long-lived copies.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

This optimization affects repeat asset fetching and bandwidth; it does not shorten the PHP execution time that determines the first byte of an uncached HTML response. Test cache headers in a browser’s network panel and confirm that a deployment actually changes the asset version when content changes.
7. Treat access logging as an operational trade-off
Access logging consumes CPU and I/O. Reviewing log volume, format, buffering, and retention can reduce overhead on a busy server, but disable or reduce logs only when retention, incident response, security monitoring, and legal requirements still remain satisfied.
Keep enough request information to correlate a slow URL with its status code, upstream timing, cache status, and request ID. If you change the log format, preserve a way to distinguish anonymous, authenticated, and cache-bypassed requests.
8. Confirm the PHP version and compatibility baseline
PrestaShop 9 requires PHP 8.1 or newer and supports up to PHP 8.4. PrestaShop’s server requirements support Nginx 1.0 or later and do not recommend older, unmaintained PHP branches.

- Inventory the current PHP version, extensions, PHP-FPM pool, theme, and modules.
- Check that the theme and every production module supports the target PHP version. Compatibility failures can create fatal errors or slower fallback behavior that looks like a server problem.
- Back up the database, application files, and configuration, and test the upgrade on staging when possible.
- Upgrade PHP and the matching PHP-FPM service, then verify that Nginx points to the new socket or upstream.
- Clear the relevant
var/cache/directory as advised for the upgrade, restart or reload PHP-FPM and the web server, and check logs for startup or extension errors. - Re-run anonymous, cart, login, and checkout tests before exposing the new runtime to all traffic.
Do not treat a newer PHP version as an automatic TTFB cure. The result depends on code compatibility, enabled extensions, database behavior, and the modules running on each request.

| Web server in the test | Reported maximum visitors per hour | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Tuned Apache2 | 2,810 | Result for that stated hardware, software tuning, workload, and test period |
| Tuned Nginx | 2,390 | Result for the same stated hardware and reported workload |
These numbers are not a universal ranking of Apache and Nginx. A valid comparison holds PHP version, PHP-FPM mode, database, cache policy, hardware, concurrency, geography, and page mix constant. Compare dynamic TTFB, throughput under concurrency, memory use, configuration complexity, cache correctness, observability, and the operations team’s familiarity. In many stores, PHP code, database latency, and cache policy matter more than the choice of front-end web server.
10. Re-test after every change
Change one variable, warm up the relevant cache, and repeat the same URL matrix. Record:

- FastCGI cache hit, miss, bypass, and stale status.
- Cookies and authorization headers present on each request.
Keep a rollback copy of every Nginx, PHP-FPM, and cache-policy change. If a synthetic benchmark improves while cart totals, account pages, stock, or checkout behavior breaks, revert the change immediately and investigate cache bypass and application compatibility.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Raising pm.max_children until the queue disappears
More workers can exhaust memory and overload the database. Measure worker memory and database contention first, then increase the limit in controlled steps.
Increasing fastcgi_read_timeout to make pages faster
The directive changes how long Nginx waits before timing out. It does not accelerate PHP. Find the slow script, query, module, or remote call instead.
Caching every HTML response
Commerce responses can contain sessions, carts, account information, authorization state, prices, or stock. Cache only anonymous, cache-safe requests and bypass explicitly when cookies or authorization indicate personalization.
Blaming front-end assets for a slow first byte
Large assets affect download completion, not the time PHP takes to begin the HTML response. Measure TTFB and total time separately before changing image or JavaScript delivery.
Disabling logs without an operational plan
Reduced logging may lower I/O, but it can remove evidence needed for incident response, security investigations, and compliance. Adjust retention or verbosity only after those requirements are covered.
Quick Recap
A practical order of operations
- Measure warm and cold TTFB for anonymous product or category pages, cart, login, and checkout.
- Validate the effective Nginx PHP location, script filename, socket, and timeout settings.
- Check PHP-FPM worker saturation and enable the slow log to identify slow scripts.
- Profile database queries, module hooks, cache misses, and remote API calls.
- Apply FastCGI caching only to verified public GET/HEAD responses with cookie and authorization bypass rules.
- Set browser cache headers for static assets and review access-log overhead within operational requirements.
- Confirm a supported PHP version and theme/module compatibility before upgrading.
- Re-test every page class and roll back any change that harms commerce correctness.
