To get a particular type of Minecraft “dog,” find or spawn a wolf in the biome linked to its coat variant. The game calls them wolves; players often call tamed wolves dogs. Mojang’s Java 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 notes document nine coat variants, selected according to biome. For survival, travel to the matching biome and look for wolves; in Creative, use a spawn egg in the appropriate biome.
Where to find each wolf variant
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes, published April 23, 2024, give these natural-spawn biome mappings and pack details. Bedrock Edition 1.20.80 release notes confirm the nine variants and biome-based selection.
| Wolf variant | Natural spawn biome | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Pale | Taiga | The familiar original wolf coat. |
| Woods | Forest | Described by Mojang as the dominant Overworld variant, since forests are common. |
| Ashen | Snowy Taiga | A cold-biome variant. |
| Black | Old Growth Pine Taiga | Smaller packs of two to four. |
| Chestnut | Old Growth Spruce Taiga | Smaller packs of two to four. |
| Rusty | Sparse Jungle | Smaller packs of two to four. |
| Spotted | Savanna Plateau | Larger packs of four to eight. |
| Striped | Wooded Badlands | Larger packs of four to eight. |
| Snowy | Grove | Rare and solitary. |
Pack sizes are the patterns described in the Java 1.20.5 notes, not a promise that every visit will produce a particular number. The notes describe four wolves as the default pack size, with the exceptions shown above.
How to spawn wolves in the right biome
Survival: search the natural habitat
- Identify the coat variant you want in the table and note its natural biome.
- Travel to that biome and search for naturally spawning wolves. Woods wolves are comparatively likely to be encountered because forests are common; Snowy wolves are explicitly described as rare and solitary.
- Tame a wolf if you want it as a companion dog. The coat variant is the wolf’s appearance; “dog” is the familiar player term for a tamed wolf.
Creative: use a spawn egg where the variant is selected
Mojang’s release notes say wolves spawned by other methods, including spawn eggs and summon commands, receive a variant according to biome rules. For Creative play, use a wolf spawn egg in the biome associated with the desired variant. This is not a documented universal method for choosing an exact coat regardless of location.

Biome-family rules for spawn eggs and summon methods
The Java 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 notes document additional matching biomes for three variants when wolves are spawned by other means. These are extensions of the selection rules, not replacements for the natural-spawn locations in the table.
| Variant | Natural-spawn biome | Additional biome matches for spawned wolves |
|---|---|---|
| Rusty | Sparse Jungle | Jungle and Bamboo Jungle |
| Spotted | Savanna Plateau | Savanna and Windswept Savanna |
| Striped | Wooded Badlands | Badlands and Eroded Badlands |
The official notes establish biome-based selection, but do not provide a complete, cross-platform command recipe that directly names any coat. Command syntax and exact behavior can depend on edition and version, so do not assume a command for Java works in Bedrock, or vice versa.

Wolf coats are not the same as wolf sounds
Minecraft’s Spring to Life article, published March 25, 2025, describes seven wolf sound personalities. These are audio variations, separate from the nine biome-based coat variants. A different sound does not mean the wolf has a different coat type.
