Mesa is a rotating third-biome option in PEAK, so check the route shown in your current game before setting out. Once you reach it, use terrain to break direct sunlight, plan exposed crossings around hazards, and keep moving carefully through the canyon.
How to find Mesa in PEAK
Mesa’s place in the route has changed across updates. The developers’ August 11, 2025 v1.20.a notes introduced it as a biome that would replace Highs for a week before rotating with Highs. The community wiki’s current route description instead lists Mesa as one of two possible third biomes, replacing Alpine; it follows Tropics or Roots and comes before Caldera or Gloom.
Those descriptions reflect different points in the game’s update history, not a fixed schedule you can rely on. Check the route displayed in your current game rather than assuming Mesa will appear on a particular day or after a particular biome. The v1.20.a update also added 10 badges with corresponding cosmetic rewards.
How to survive Mesa
Use shade to manage Heat
Direct sunlight causes Heat, making exposure the biome’s main survival concern. Move through shade whenever the terrain allows. The canyon can provide cover before the route reaches the cliffside, so look ahead for sheltered sections instead of staying in open ground longer than necessary.
#1 Best Overall
The community wiki’s guidance says the game checks line of sight between the sun and a Scout’s center. Terrain that blocks that line can prevent sun-caused Heat. When choosing between paths, weigh how much shade they offer alongside the climbing and crossings they require; there is no source-established route ranking.
Read the ground and watch for hazards
Mesa includes tornadoes and antlion traps, as well as tumbleweeds and scorpions. Keep your footing, be wary of questionable sand depressions, and consider nearby hazards before committing to an exposed crossing. Avoid rushing through uncertain terrain when a safer line is available.

Patch details can vary by game version. The developers’ August 13, 2025 v1.23.a notes say tumbleweed damage and knockback were made more consistent, with damage changed from Injury to Thorns. The same patch adjusted scorpion poison damage and aggro, and specified that scorpions need line of sight to aggro. Treat those as changes documented for that patch, not a guarantee that every detail is unchanged in later builds.
Adapt to what you find
The Mesa update added Balloons, Scout Cannon, Parasol, Sunscreen, Aloe, and Dynamite as in-game items. The update notes do not promise that any particular item will spawn, so do not build a plan around finding one. Make route decisions based on the terrain and supplies actually available during your run.
