Prepare the scanner and compactor
The Vermillius Gap Buried Treasure side quest requires two tools: the Handheld Resource Scanner and the Static Compactor. Its objectives call for researching and fabricating the scanner, fabricating the compactor, and then using them to locate and uncover treasure. The quest reference is listed for version 1.5.3.6 and was updated October 6, 2026: Dune Database quest reference.

The quest frames the hunt around the aftermath of a sandstorm, but that is not evidence that every storm reliably spawns a new cache. No dependable spawn schedule is established.

Go to open sand rather than rocky ground; that is the terrain specified by the quest objective. Vermillius Gap is the named location for the side quest. A gameplay guide also describes open-desert treasure searches in Vermillius Gap, Hagga Basin, and the Deep Desert: gameplay guide. The available information does not establish a universal fixed coordinate, so search the open-sand area rather than heading for a promised grid location.

Scan for a treasure marker
- Equip and use the Handheld Resource Scanner while on open sand.
- Look for the marker indicating a cache. One guide describes a yellow chest or diamond marker.
- Check the map if the icon is unfamiliar. A recent guide warns that markers can indicate Drum or Quicksand instead of treasure: marker guide.
- Approach only after confirming that the marker is treasure.
Use the Static Compactor to uncover it
At the confirmed marker, operate the Static Compactor on the sand beneath it. The compactor is the tool the quest reference specifies for unburying the cache. Once it is exposed, collect the treasure.
Reduce your exposure to sandworms and other players
Scanning and compacting on open sand can put you at risk from sandworms. The Deep Desert guide also identifies danger from other players. One guide recommends scanning from the edge of open sand and leaving promptly after compacting; treat that as a way to reduce exposure, not a guarantee of safety.

Handheld or vehicle-assisted scanning?
The quest reference explicitly requires the handheld scanner. A secondary guide describes compatible vehicle scanners as a faster, safer way to search because you can scan while moving; the Method guide specifically recommends a Scout Ornithopter module to reduce exposure. Those are guide recommendations, and their usefulness depends on your unlocks, vehicle access, and the current patch.

What is and is not established about Deep Desert caches
The Vermillius Gap side quest and recurring open-sand searches in the Deep Desert share the scanner-and-compactor method. The Deep Desert adds the possibility of other-player danger, but the available guides do not establish a reliable respawn cadence, a guaranteed post-storm spawn, or a stable loot table. Likewise, there is no confirmed number of scans that guarantees a find or reward.
