When a franchise changes direction, search for the qualities you miss—not the franchise name alone. Break the older games into mechanics, use those terms in Steam’s tag and description search, treat recommendation shelves as leads, and verify every candidate’s actual play, platform, and multiplayer details before buying.
Why “more like the old games” is too vague
A sequel can keep a setting, character, or name while changing the experience that made the earlier games appealing. “More like the old games” might mean deliberate resource management, a fixed camera, interconnected exploration, a party-based combat loop, slower pacing, or simply a particular atmosphere. Those qualities are not interchangeable, and a store recommendation based on a broad genre label can miss the point.

Start by describing the moment-to-moment experience you want to preserve. The result becomes a search brief that can be tested against actual game descriptions and screenshots rather than a hope that a familiar brand name will lead you to the right substitute.
Step 1: Identify the qualities you want to keep
Write down three to five qualities before opening a storefront. Choose observable features rather than conclusions such as “it feels better.” The questions below turn a vague preference into terms another game can satisfy.

| Quality | Questions to answer | Useful search language |
|---|---|---|
| Combat loop | Is combat turn-based, real-time, tactical, ranged, melee, or built around stamina, cover, combos, or party commands? | Turn-based tactics, party combat, parry, resource management, cover shooter, action RPG |
| Movement | Do you value platforming, climbing, vehicle handling, stealth, dashes, or a deliberately heavy character? | Precision platforming, traversal, stealth, vehicle exploration, movement abilities |
| Progression | Are upgrades found in the world, selected from a skill tree, earned through equipment, or tied to choices? | Skill tree, build variety, equipment crafting, choices matter, metaprogression |
| Exploration and level design | Is the appeal an open world, a hub structure, interconnected rooms, secrets, environmental puzzles, or mission-based stages? | Exploration, interconnected world, environmental puzzles, immersive sim, hub-based |
| Camera and perspective | Do you need first-person, third-person, isometric, side-scrolling, a fixed camera, or a particular distance from the character? | First-person, third-person, isometric, side-scroller, fixed-camera |
| Pacing | Should the game be tense and compact, relaxed and exploratory, or a long campaign with frequent story scenes? | Slow-burn, fast-paced, exploration-heavy, mission-based, narrative adventure |
| Party structure | Do you control one hero, swap between a party, issue commands to companions, or play cooperatively with other people? | Party-based, companion system, character switching, cooperative campaign |
| Atmosphere | Is the key quality horror, melancholy, comedy, colorful fantasy, science fiction, or a particular level of tension? | Psychological horror, dark fantasy, cozy exploration, science-fiction mystery |
Mark each item as essential, preferred, or optional. This prevents a recommendation with attractive similarities from winning simply because it shares a setting or genre while failing the feature you actually miss.
Separate the core loop from the wrapper
The wrapper includes the story premise, characters, art direction, and setting. The core loop is what you do repeatedly: explore, fight, solve, manage, build, or negotiate. If the new direction changed the core loop but retained the wrapper, search for the old loop first. You can then add setting or tone as secondary filters.
Step 2: Translate the brief into specific search terms
Steam search supports queries by title, tag, or description and provides additional filters. Its Steam Discovery Update documents these discovery features. Enter a small group of concrete terms instead of one broad word such as “action.” A query built from “party-based,” “turn-based tactics,” and “resource management” is more diagnostic than “RPG.”
Steam’s official tags documentation explains that a title’s top 20 tags can affect which games are treated as similar, and that specific tags can carry more influence than common, broad tags. That makes narrow mechanics useful for discovery, but it does not make tags a guarantee of matching play. A tag can describe a minor feature, a marketing angle, or a player’s interpretation.
Build a compact term set
- Choose two or three essential mechanics, such as “resource management,” “fixed-camera,” or “party-based.”
- Add one structure term, such as “interconnected world,” “mission-based,” or “hub-based.”
- Add one tone or setting term only if it is genuinely important.
- Run several smaller searches rather than one long sentence. Different games may use different wording for the same feature.
- Record promising tags that appear on strong candidates, then use those tags in a second search.
Do not treat the franchise’s name as the main search term if your goal is to escape its new direction. Use the name only to identify the qualities you are trying to replace, then search those qualities directly.

Step 3: Create a candidate pool on Steam
Use the storefront as a funnel: broad enough to produce options, then narrow enough to remove false matches. The exact results will change as the catalog and user activity change, so save the terms and filters that produced each candidate.
- Open Steam’s store search and enter one or two of your essential mechanics.
- Apply the available tag and feature filters to remove games that cannot meet a hard requirement, such as a perspective, controller mode, or multiplayer format.
- Repeat with a different wording for the same quality. For example, search both a structural term and a mechanic term rather than assuming every developer uses the same label.
- Keep a shortlist of roughly five to ten titles. At this stage, a title is a lead, not a purchase decision.
- Open each candidate’s store page and check the actual description, screenshots, supported players, and platform information.
Use every discovery surface, but know its role
Steam offers a recommendation feed, the Discovery Queue, curator recommendations, and a More Like This area. Use these surfaces to generate names you would not have found through a keyword search. The queue is useful for rapid triage; curator pages can reveal a reason for a recommendation; and More Like This can expand from a game that already satisfies your brief.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese surfaces are not interchangeable evidence. Valve’s tags documentation says the tag-driven title-similarity display is not a direct reflection of the More Like This algorithm. A game appearing beside another title therefore tells you that Steam found a relationship, not that both games share the specific combat, pacing, or level design you want.
Step 4: Understand what personalized recommendations can and cannot do
Valve’s July 11, 2019 announcement of the Interactive Recommender described suggestions based on playtime histories and patterns among players, with controls for release window and popularity. Valve explained the idea this way: “The idea is that if players with broadly similar play habits to you also tend to play another game you haven’t tried yet, then that game is likely to be a good recommendation for you.” That statement describes the rationale for the system at launch; it should not be read as a specification of Steam’s exact present-day implementation.
The same 2019 announcement described a cold-start limitation: a game without player data could not be recommended by that model. Consequently, personalized shelves can underrepresent new, obscure, or lightly played titles. Pair them with tag and description searches when you want releases that have not accumulated much behavioral data.

Adjust the recommendation controls deliberately
If Steam presents release-window or popularity controls, change one at a time. A recent-release setting can surface current alternatives but may exclude older games that established the style you want. A popularity setting can reduce obscure results, while lowering it can expose smaller titles; neither setting proves quality or similarity. Note the setting beside each candidate so you remember why it appeared.

Step 5: Inspect each candidate’s real features
Open the store page for every serious candidate and test it against your original brief. Do not infer a feature from a genre label or a recommendation position.
- Core loop: Identify what the player does repeatedly in the first hour and across the campaign. A game can be tagged “action” while using a very different combat rhythm from the older franchise.
- Progression: Check whether upgrades are permanent, reset between runs, tied to equipment, or mostly narrative. “Skill tree” alone does not tell you how consequential the choices are.
- Camera and movement: Confirm the perspective in screenshots and description. A third-person label does not establish whether the camera is fixed, close, distant, or freely controlled.
- Pacing and tone: Look for mission length, exploration emphasis, story frequency, and the stated atmosphere. Matching mechanics with a radically different tempo may still feel wrong.
- Party and multiplayer support: Distinguish a single-player companion system from playable co-op. Check the supported player count and whether online or local participation is required.
- Platform compatibility: Verify the platform you use and any controller, operating-system, or input requirements shown on the page.
- Evidence in screenshots and video: Look for the spaces, interfaces, enemy encounters, and traversal shown—not just promotional character art.
Steam’s own tag and recommendation systems are useful for finding candidates, but this inspection is necessary because a shared tag does not establish that the moment-to-moment play will feel the same.
Step 6: Compare finalists with a consistent scorecard
When several games survive inspection, compare them on the qualities that caused you to search in the first place. Use a simple 0–5 score for each item: 0 means absent, 3 means an acceptable match, and 5 means it is central to the game. Keep “unknown” separate from 0 so that missing information does not become a false negative.
| Criterion | What to record | Your score |
|---|---|---|
| Core loop | Primary repeated actions and whether they match your essential mechanic | 0–5 or unknown |
| Progression | Upgrade structure, build choices, and persistence | 0–5 or unknown |
| Camera and perspective | First-person, third-person, isometric, side-scrolling, or fixed-camera fit | 0–5 or unknown |
| Pacing | Mission rhythm, exploration time, and story frequency | 0–5 or unknown |
| Tone | Atmosphere and emotional register | 0–5 or unknown |
| Party or multiplayer | Solo, companion, local, online, or required co-op structure | 0–5 or unknown |
| Platform fit | Availability and input requirements for your setup | Pass or fail |
| Cost and commitment | Listed price, edition, campaign length, and any required service | Your budget decision |
Give essential criteria veto power. A candidate that scores highly overall but fails your required perspective or multiplayer mode is not a match for your particular need. Conversely, a lower-scoring title may be worth trying if it delivers the one mechanic you miss and the other differences are acceptable.

Step 7: Broaden the search when the first pass fails
When results are too broad
- Replace a genre term with a mechanic or structure term.
- Remove the franchise name and search the older game’s actual loop.
- Use one hard filter at a time so you can see which constraint removes useful candidates.
- Inspect the tags on a strong match and search its more specific tags.
When results are too narrow
- Keep the essential mechanic but remove setting and tone terms temporarily.
- Try synonyms: “party-based” and “companion,” or “interconnected world” and “exploration.”
- Allow a different camera or pacing if those were preferences rather than requirements.
- Use recommendation shelves from one verified match, then inspect each result manually.
When every result is an established hit
Lower popularity constraints, search new-release listings, and rely more on tags and descriptions. The 2019 Interactive Recommender description specifically noted that games with no player data could not be surfaced by that model, so a new or lightly played game may require a non-personalized search.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A worked example without naming a franchise
Imagine that a franchise’s newest entry moved from compact, exploration-heavy levels and deliberate resource use to a fast open-world action format. “Find games like the old entries” would mix incompatible goals. A usable brief would say:
- Essential: interconnected exploration, limited resources, deliberate combat.
- Preferred: fixed or close third-person camera, environmental puzzles, short return loops to a hub.
- Optional: the original setting and character archetypes.
Search the essential mechanics separately, apply relevant tags and feature filters, and collect candidates from both search results and recommendation shelves. For each candidate, verify whether resources are actually scarce, whether areas interconnect rather than merely appearing on a large map, and whether combat is deliberate rather than simply slower animation. Score the finalists on the table’s criteria, then reject any that fail the required camera or platform condition. This process finds the experience underneath the branding instead of looking for a clone of the new entry.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Confusing setting with experience
A game can share a fantasy, science-fiction, or horror setting while using a completely different progression and pacing. Mark setting as optional unless it is genuinely essential.
Ignoring multiplayer and platform details
A single-player title with companions is not equivalent to cooperative play, and a technically similar game is irrelevant if it does not run on your platform. Check both before you invest time or money.
Expecting personalized tools to find everything
Player-history systems favor games with enough activity to generate patterns. Combine them with direct tag searches and new-release discovery to reduce that blind spot.

A repeatable checklist
- Write three to five qualities from the older games.
- Classify each as essential, preferred, or optional.
- Convert the essentials into specific mechanics, subgenres, and structure terms.
- Search Steam by title, tag, or description and apply the available filters.
- Use the Discovery Queue, recommendation feed, curator recommendations, and More Like This to expand the list.
- Remember that tag-driven similarity is not the same as the More Like This algorithm.
- Inspect descriptions, screenshots, mechanics, player support, and platform compatibility.
- Score finalists on loop, progression, camera, pacing, tone, multiplayer, platform, and cost.
- Broaden terms or lower popularity constraints when new or obscure games are missing.
- Choose the candidate that satisfies your essential qualities, not the one with the most familiar name.
For an informal example of the question players ask when starting this process, a Steam Community participant wrote, “How do i find more games similar a game I enjoy?” The wording is anecdotal rather than evidence of search volume, but it captures the practical problem: similarity becomes useful only after “similar” is defined.
