The reliable way to find a Minecraft item ID is to identify your edition and version first, then use the in-game command suggestions. In Java Edition, type /give @s in chat and choose an entry such as minecraft:stick; to inspect the item in your selected slot, run /data get entity @s SelectedItem. In Bedrock Edition, use the same autocomplete technique and verify the spelling against Microsoft’s Item enum and Default Minecraft Item Listings. Numeric IDs are a separate, older Bedrock/runtime system and should not be substituted for modern textual command identifiers.

Start by identifying the edition and version
“Item ID” can mean different things depending on which Minecraft edition and which task you are doing. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition both accept textual item identifiers in commands, but their command systems and reference lists are not interchangeable. Bedrock projects can also involve legacy numerical or runtime values that are mainly relevant to JSON UI, texture slots, and add-on internals.

- Legacy Bedrock numbers: Numerical IDs belong to an older/runtime system. They are not automatically interchangeable with the textual name used by a current
/givecommand.
Write down the exact edition and game version before copying an identifier into a command block, datapack, behavior pack, or add-on. A name that is valid in one edition, or in one release, can be rejected in another.
Find a Java Edition item ID in chat
Use command autocomplete
- Make sure commands are available. In a Java single-player world, commands can be enabled when the world is created or later through World Options.
- Open chat and type
/give @s, including the space after@s. - Open the completion list and select the item. Keep the namespace exactly as displayed, normally in the form
minecraft:item_name. - Add a quantity and test the result with a small command such as
/give @s minecraft:stick 1.
The completion menu is tied to the running Java version, so it is safer than copying an old list. It also exposes the spelling, underscores, and namespace that the command parser expects. If several entries appear, continue typing a few letters to narrow the list rather than guessing.

Inspect the item you are holding
If you already have the item, select it in your hotbar and run:
/data get entity @s SelectedItem
The returned structure contains the selected item’s identifier along with its stored data. This is useful when an item has components or custom data that you need to reproduce, not merely when you want its basic name. Treat the output as authoritative for that running Java version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Java’s item-data format changed in version 1.20.5 and later. Newer output uses item components where older examples commonly show a tag structure. A tutorial written for a pre-1.20.5 release can therefore show a layout that does not match your output even when the item itself is valid. Copy the identifier from your own command result, and adapt any component syntax to the version you are actually running.
Use the identifier in other Java commands
Once autocomplete or SelectedItem has supplied the name, use that exact string wherever the command expects an item argument. Typical uses include:
Rank #2
/givefor adding an item to a player’s inventory./clearfor removing or checking an item./replaceitemwhere the command form in your version accepts an item identifier.- Command blocks, which use the same command parser as chat.
- Datapacks, where the identifier is written into a function or other data file using the syntax required by that release.
For a first test, use one ordinary item and one item at a time. A successful command confirms that the name is valid in the current world; it does not prove that an identical command will work in Bedrock.
Find a Bedrock Edition item ID
Use Bedrock’s completion list first
- Enable the permissions required for commands. In a Bedrock single-player world, open the world settings, go to the Game tab, and turn on Allow Cheats. Enabling cheats disables achievements in that world.
- Open chat and type
/give @s. - Choose an entry from the item completion list instead of typing a name from memory.
- Run a small test command and confirm that the item appears in the inventory.
Autocomplete reflects the command names available to that Bedrock installation. It is the quickest way to catch spelling differences and to avoid using a Java-only identifier. If you are working with a behavior pack or an add-on, test with the pack enabled because custom content can change which names are available.

For documentation work, compare the in-game spelling with Microsoft Learn’s Item Enum and Default Minecraft Item Listings. The Item Enum is the reference used by commands including clear, give, and replaceitem. The Item Enum page was last updated on August 7, 2025; the Default Minecraft Item Listings page was last updated on August 25, 2026. Those dates matter because item catalogs and syntax can change with the game.
Use the list that matches your edition and release, then retain the namespace shown for the vanilla item. Do not silently convert a Bedrock name into a Java name, or vice versa, just because the two games contain an item with the same display name.

When a Bedrock project asks for a number
Some Bedrock documentation and add-on tooling still refers to numerical or runtime IDs. These values are primarily associated with older systems such as JSON UI and runtime texture slots. They are a different identifier layer from the textual type ID used by a modern command.
If the field is an item type in a command, start with the textual identifier from autocomplete or the official item list. If the field explicitly asks for a runtime or numerical value, consult documentation for that exact API or pack format. The Bedrock Wiki’s numerical-ID reference is current as of Bedrock version 26.50 and notes that version and add-on effects can change raw numeric slots. A number copied from one pack or release may therefore fail in another.
Textual IDs and numerical IDs are not the same thing
| Identifier form | Where it is normally used | How to obtain it | Main portability concern |
|---|---|---|---|
Namespaced textual ID, such as minecraft:stick |
Java commands and modern Bedrock command arguments | In-game autocomplete; Java’s SelectedItem data; official Bedrock item references |
Edition and game version determine whether the name is accepted |
| Legacy numerical or runtime ID | Older Bedrock-oriented JSON UI, runtime texture slots, and some add-on internals | The reference for the exact Bedrock release or pack format | Raw slots can be affected by version and add-on content, so copied numbers may not be portable |
The namespace is part of the identifier, not decoration. Omitting minecraft: may work in a context that supplies a default namespace, but retaining the fully qualified form makes a command clearer and reduces ambiguity when custom content is installed.
Choose the right lookup method for the job
You only need to give yourself a vanilla item
Use chat autocomplete. This is the shortest path and automatically reflects the command names exposed by the current installation. In Java, the pattern is:
Rank #4
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
/give @s minecraft:stick 1
Replace the item name with the completion entry you selected. In Bedrock, insert the Bedrock completion entry rather than assuming the Java spelling is valid.

Hold or select the item and run:
/data get entity @s SelectedItem
Read the identifier from the returned structure. If you are documenting a release from before Java 1.20.5, expect older tag-style data examples; for 1.20.5 and later, expect components. Do not paste an older data structure into a newer command without checking the current format.
You are writing Bedrock documentation or a pack
Check the command completion list, then verify the name in the Microsoft Learn Item Enum and Default Minecraft Item Listings. Record the Bedrock version alongside the identifier. If the pack uses JSON UI, texture slots, or another field that explicitly requests a numeric/runtime value, perform a separate lookup for that field instead of substituting the command name.
You are troubleshooting a command block or datapack
- Run the smallest version of the command in chat first.
- Confirm the item appears or is removed as expected.
- Copy the tested identifier into the command block, function, or pack file.
- Retest after enabling the relevant pack or changing the world version.
This isolates an invalid item name from unrelated command-block conditions such as redstone activation, function paths, permissions, or selector mistakes.

Common failures and how to correct them
No item suggestions appear after /give @s
- Check that the command was typed with a leading slash and a space after the target selector.
- Confirm that commands are enabled. Java worlds use the command permission configured in World Options; Bedrock single-player worlds use Allow Cheats.
- Remove extra punctuation and type the first few letters of the item name again.
- Make sure you are looking at the completion list for the correct edition rather than a guide for the other edition.
The command says the item is unknown
Copy the name directly from autocomplete. Check the namespace, underscores, and spelling. Then verify the game version: a list made for a newer or older release may contain an entry that your installation does not recognize. For Bedrock, compare the name with the current Microsoft item references; for Java, use the running game’s own suggestions or SelectedItem output.
A Java tutorial shows tag, but your output shows components
This is expected when comparing pre-1.20.5 material with Java 1.20.5 or later. The item identifier can still be valid while the stored-data representation has changed. Use the current /data get entity @s SelectedItem output as the model for your version.
A numeric Bedrock ID works in one project but not another
Numeric/runtime slots can be affected by the Bedrock version and by add-on content. Recheck whether the receiving field truly requires a number. If it is a command argument, use the textual type ID. If it is a JSON UI or runtime field, obtain the numeric value from documentation matching the exact version and pack order.
An identifier works in chat but not in a datapack or add-on
First confirm that the file belongs to the same edition and version as the test world. Then check the format required by that file: a command function expects command syntax, while an add-on or UI definition may expect a type ID, resource name, or runtime value. Do not replace one identifier class with another merely because the display name matches.
Quick Recap
Version-aware checklist
- Record Java or Bedrock before looking up a name.
- Record the exact game version, especially when copying older command or item-data examples.
- For commands, begin with
/give @sand use autocomplete. - In Java, inspect a selected item with
/data get entity @s SelectedItemwhen you need its stored identifier or components. - In Bedrock, verify command names with Microsoft Learn’s Item Enum and Default Minecraft Item Listings.
- Keep the
minecraft:namespace when it is shown. - Use textual IDs for modern command arguments; investigate numerical/runtime IDs only when the target field explicitly requires them.
- For Java 1.20.5 and later, expect components rather than the older tag layout.
- For Bedrock numeric work, match the reference to the release and add-on environment; the Bedrock Wiki reference is current as of version 26.50.
- Test a minimal command in chat before placing the identifier in a command block, datapack, behavior pack, or add-on.
