The fastest way to discover an unfamiliar Xbox game is to translate the familiar IP you love into the qualities that make it work for you. Identify its genre, moment-to-moment mechanics, setting, tone, story emphasis, difficulty, session length, player modes and accessibility needs. Then use those attributes—not just the franchise name—to search the Xbox catalog, compare game pages and explore curated collections.
Xbox does not document a universal feature that recommends every game sharing an IP. The practical method is a deliberate shortlist: start with two or three important traits, filter current Xbox listings, and verify platform, subscription tier, region and player support before deciding what to play.

What “based on an IP you enjoy” really means
An intellectual property (IP) can be a game franchise, fictional universe, character group or recognizable setting. Two games may share an official universe, be licensed from the same property, or simply appeal to the same taste without any legal connection. Treat those as separate relationships.
- Official connection: a sequel, spin-off, remake or licensed entry in the same universe.
- Design similarity: a different property that uses comparable combat, movement, progression or camera design.
- Taste similarity: a game with the same mood, setting, narrative focus or session style, even when its mechanics differ.
Xbox catalog metadata can help you search by genre, player mode, platform and some accessibility information. It does not establish that a genre label means identical mechanics, tone or story. Describe a candidate in specific terms: “third-person cooperative shooter with short missions,” for example, rather than promising that it is “the same as” a favorite franchise.

Break your favorite IP into searchable attributes
Write down what you actually enjoy before opening the store. The IP name is only a starting point; the attributes determine whether a new game will fit.
| Attribute | Questions to ask yourself | Useful search or filter language |
|---|---|---|
| Genre and structure | Is it a shooter, role-playing game, racer, strategy game, platformer, survival game or something hybrid? Is it open-world, mission-based, level-based or match-based? | Genre name, subgenre, “open world,” “tactical,” “turn-based,” “roguelike” |
| Moment-to-moment play | What do you do every minute: aim, parry, build, drift, solve puzzles, manage resources, explore or negotiate? | “cover shooting,” “melee combo,” “crafting,” “driving,” “stealth,” “deck building” |
| Setting | Do you prefer science fiction, historical, contemporary, fantasy, horror, a particular scale of world or a specific type of technology? | Setting and era terms, such as “space,” “cyberpunk,” “medieval,” “post-apocalyptic” |
| Tone | Is the appeal tense, humorous, hopeful, bleak, cinematic, cozy, competitive or mysterious? | “dark,” “lighthearted,” “cinematic,” “relaxing,” “survival horror” |
| Story emphasis | Do you want a heavily scripted campaign, emergent stories, character relationships, lore discovery or minimal narrative between matches? | “story-driven,” “choice-based,” “campaign,” “sandbox,” “multiplayer-focused” |
| Challenge and pace | Do you enjoy demanding encounters, adjustable difficulty, long sessions, ten-minute runs or a slow exploration pace? | “accessible difficulty,” “short sessions,” “hardcore,” “pauseable,” “drop-in” |
| Player mode | Will you play alone, locally with others, online cooperatively or competitively? Do you need cross-platform play? | Solo, local co-op, online co-op, multiplayer, cross-platform |
| Access requirements | Do you need subtitles, remappable controls, high-contrast options, narration, difficulty assists or other support? | Accessibility details on the individual game page |
Choose the two or three attributes that matter most. A broad search for every trait at once can hide good options; a focused first pass gives you a manageable list that you can inspect manually.
Use the Xbox Game Pass catalog as the first filter
If you subscribe to Game Pass, begin with the current catalog browse page. It exposes search, platform and subscription filters, genre filters and collections. The catalog is volatile, so a title’s presence must be checked on the day you plan to play it.
- Open the catalog browse page and enter either the familiar IP name or one of your chosen attributes. Try natural phrases such as “games like my favorite franchise,” “what should I play after this title,” or “Xbox games similar to this IP,” then reduce the results with specific genre terms.
- Select your platform. Choose the Xbox console or Windows PC option that matches where you play. A listing on one platform is not proof that it is available on another.
- Select the subscription tier. Confirm that the game is included in your actual plan, not merely visible in the wider catalog.
- Apply a genre filter. Genre is a useful bridge from a known game to unfamiliar ones, but inspect the game page because labels do not describe every mechanic.
- Check collections. Popular, recently added, coming soon, leaving soon, publisher or service-group and ID@Xbox collections can reveal candidates that a text search misses.
- Open each candidate’s full listing. Confirm the current inclusion status, platform, player modes, accessibility information and any purchase requirement before adding it to your shortlist.
“Leaving soon” is especially useful when you want to try something before it exits the service. It is also a warning not to treat a current inclusion as permanent. “Coming soon” can help you wishlist a future release, but it is not playable merely because it appears in a collection.
What the catalog can and cannot tell you
- It can expose current filters and service information, subject to region, edition and date.
- It can provide official genre and player-mode metadata.
- It cannot prove that the game reproduces the exact feel, narrative or tone of your favorite IP.
- It cannot guarantee that a feature shown in one regional listing appears in another.
Xbox’s Microsoft Learn publishing guide explains that genre, solo, multiplayer, co-op and cross-platform modes are useful discovery metadata. Use those fields as evidence for a shortlist, not as a substitute for reading the description and watching current gameplay footage from an authorized source.
Try preference-led discovery in the Windows Xbox app
Xbox described a Windows app flow in March 2023 called “Tell us what you like.” In that announcement, a player selected a genre or “vibe” and received a small set of collections. The same article described regional Trending collections and library filters for player count, rating and genre.
Those are dated feature details, not a promise that every control still appears under the same label in 2026. Open the current Windows Xbox app and look for preference prompts, Home recommendations, collection cards or library filters. If the controls differ, use the same principle rather than following obsolete click paths:

On December 11, 2024, Xbox executive Chris Charla wrote that “The Xbox app is also becoming a great way for players to find cool Xbox games that aren’t available with Game Pass.” He also wrote, “Home highlights featured content so players can stay up to date on game releases, new events, Game Pass content, sales, and more.” These statements support using the app for discovery beyond the subscription catalog; they do not promise a recommendation algorithm based on shared IP.
Look beyond major franchises with Indie Selects
Xbox announced Indie Selects in January 2024 as a curated route to independent games. The announcement described rotating weekly themes, upcoming titles that could be wishlisted and a monthly set of six selected games. A March 2024 Xbox article presented the program as a way to expose the wider catalog beyond Game Pass.
Because those announcements describe a planned cadence, check the current Xbox Store collection before relying on a weekly or monthly schedule. The practical workflow is:
- Open the current Indie Selects or similarly named curated collection in the Xbox Store.
- Read the theme or curator description to see which of your chosen attributes it emphasizes.
- Wishlist an upcoming title when the listing offers that option, but distinguish a wishlist entry from a release or subscription inclusion.
- Compare the selected game’s actual genre, modes, accessibility information and platform with your shortlist.
Indie discovery is valuable when your favorite IP’s appeal comes from a design idea rather than its scale. A small game may share a mechanic, mood or session length without resembling the franchise’s budget, camera or production style. The ID@Xbox context is broad: the March 2024 announcement said more than 3,500 titles from independent developers in more than 100 countries were in active development for Xbox and Windows at that time. That is a dated program figure, not a current catalog total or evidence that any particular recommendation will suit you.
Compare candidates on the traits that matter
Once you have five to ten candidates, score them against the reasons you liked the original IP. Keep facts from the game page separate from your editorial judgment.
| Comparison axis | What to verify | How to interpret a match |
|---|---|---|
| Genre and mechanics | Official genre labels, combat or movement description, progression loop and game structure | Strongest predictor of moment-to-moment satisfaction, but labels may be broad |
| Setting and tone | World, era, visual style and stated mood in the description | Useful when atmosphere matters more than rules; treat it as a qualitative comparison |
| Narrative | Campaign length, character focus, choices, lore or emergent storytelling | Separate a story-rich match from a mechanically similar but plot-light game |
| Player modes | Solo, local co-op, online co-op, competitive multiplayer and cross-platform support | Eliminate games that cannot support the way your group plays |
| Accessibility | Subtitles, input options, difficulty assists, visual, audio and motor supports listed on the page | Confirm the exact feature; never infer support from a franchise relationship |
| Platform and access | Console or PC edition, region, subscription tier, purchase status and release state | Determines whether you can play now and at what cost |
A simple scoring worksheet
Give each candidate a score from zero to two for your three priority attributes: zero for no match, one for partial match and two for a strong match. Add a separate yes/no check for non-negotiables such as online co-op, subtitles or Windows support. A high total is not enough if a non-negotiable fails.
| Candidate | Priority trait 1 | Priority trait 2 | Priority trait 3 | Required mode or access check | Current availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Game A | 0–2 | 0–2 | 0–2 | Pass or fail | Verify on listing |
| Game B | 0–2 | 0–2 | 0–2 | Pass or fail | Verify on listing |
| Game C | 0–2 | 0–2 | 0–2 | Pass or fail | Verify on listing |
Use the notes column to record a concrete reason, such as “short solo missions” or “online co-op listed.” Avoid vague notes such as “feels similar,” which make it difficult to learn from a miss.

Search examples without overpromising similarity
Suppose your favorite IP is a long-running action franchise. Instead of searching only its name, write a profile such as:
- Third-person action
- Science-fiction setting
- Story-led campaign
- Moderate difficulty with solo play
Use the first two traits to filter the catalog, then inspect narrative and difficulty information manually. If the result is too broad, replace one trait with a mechanic—“cover shooting,” “melee parry” or “vehicle traversal”—rather than adding many mood words.
For a competitive favorite, the profile might be “short online matches, ranked play, precise aiming and cross-platform support.” For a cozy exploration game, it might be “low-pressure solo play, discovery, gentle progression and pause-friendly sessions.” The process works because it describes the experience you want, not because Xbox guarantees a hidden IP-matching engine.
Verify accessibility and player mode before downloading
Accessibility is part of game fit, not an optional afterthought. Microsoft’s publishing guidance treats accessibility information as useful discovery metadata. On each candidate’s page, look for the specific support you need and confirm it for the edition and platform you will use.
- Subtitles, caption controls and text-size options
- Control remapping, alternate input methods and hold/toggle settings
- Difficulty assists, aim support or damage adjustments
- Color, contrast, visual-effects and motion settings
- Screen narration, audio cues or independent volume controls
- Solo, local co-op, online co-op, competitive multiplayer and cross-platform play
Do not infer any of these features from a shared publisher, genre or fictional universe. If the listing is unclear, check the game’s official support documentation before buying or starting a large download.

Treating a genre label as a mechanical guarantee
Problem: Two games can both be labeled “role-playing” or “action” while having completely different combat and pacing.
Fix: Read the gameplay description and compare the core loop, not just the top-level genre.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Fix: Mark player mode as a non-negotiable and verify it on the game page before scoring other traits.
Confusing a wishlist with access
Problem: A wishlisted or “coming soon” title is not necessarily released or included in a subscription.
Fix: Check release state, purchase options and subscription status separately.

How to handle uncertain or changing information
Xbox discovery surfaces change frequently. Catalog membership, regional availability, subscription terms, app navigation and collection schedules can all change after an article or video is published. Date-sensitive statements should be treated as snapshots: the March 2023 Windows app description and the January and March 2024 Indie Selects announcements explain the intended discovery tools, while the live Xbox catalog and store listing determine what is available now.
Chris Charla’s December 2024 article said nearly 400 titles previously not discoverable or purchasable in the Xbox app had been added to it. That figure describes an app catalog update at that time; it is not the size of the full Xbox catalog and does not measure how often players find a satisfying match. Likewise, no official source here supplies a success rate for IP-based recommendations. Judge a method by the fit of the games you try, not by a claimed recommendation statistic.
When to choose a purchase instead of a subscription
A subscription is a convenient discovery tool when the candidate is currently included in your region and tier. Buying can make more sense when a game is leaving soon, is not included, or is a title you expect to replay. Make the decision only after matching the game to a stated preference and confirming its current platform and price on the official listing. There is no single console, accessory or other physical product that solves the discovery problem for an unknown favorite IP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Xbox have a universal “games like this IP” recommendation tool?
The official materials described here do not establish a universal IP-matching tool. Use the catalog’s search and filters, current app recommendations and curated collections, then compare the specific qualities you enjoy.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I rely on Game Pass search results to stay available?
No. Catalog membership, platform support, region and subscription tier can change. Verify the live listing immediately before you play.
Are Indie Selects releases included with Game Pass?
Not automatically. Indie Selects is a curated store collection; check each title’s current purchase and subscription status.
How do I find games that support my accessibility needs?
Open each candidate’s current game page and inspect its listed accessibility information. Confirm the exact feature for your platform and edition rather than inferring it from genre or franchise.
