Check the exact game, edition, platform, and mode—not just whether it is labelled “single-player.” Find the publisher’s support page and official store requirements, look for connection and shutdown notices, then test your own copy offline before you rely on it. A game may need the internet only to download, or it may require authentication at launch, periodic checks, or a continuous connection to play.
Identify the copy and mode you need to play
Start with the game’s full title, platform, edition, and format (disc or digital). Different editions, platform clients, or third-party launchers can have different requirements. Also name the specific mode you care about: a campaign may work offline even when multiplayer does not, or the reverse.

“Single-player” is not proof of offline support. A game can be primarily single-player and still require updates, authentication, or a server connection under its terms. Those terms are useful evidence of stated policy, but they do not replace checking the game’s actual requirements or testing your copy. Read the game’s service terms for any stated online dependencies and service-support conditions.
Find out what the internet connection is used for
Search the publisher’s support site and the official store listing for the game name alongside phrases such as “internet connection,” “offline,” “online activation,” “periodic verification,” and “launcher.” Prefer an answer about your exact game and platform to a general assumption about the console or store.

Separate the connection requirement by stage and feature. Internet access to download a game does not necessarily mean it is needed to play: Square Enix says of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, “You will only need an internet connection to download the game. There’s no need to be connected to the internet to play the game itself.” That statement applies to that title and support context, not to other games. See Square Enix’s answer.
- Download or installation: Is a connection needed to obtain the game or complete installation?
- First launch or activation: Must the game connect once to authenticate, finish setup, or check for required updates?
- Ongoing play: Does it need a connection continuously, or only for a particular mode?
- Periodic checks: Does it revalidate ownership or access occasionally?
- Optional online features: Are multiplayer, matchmaking, cloud saves, leaderboards, live events, or server-held content the only affected features?
Check official service and shutdown notices
Search the publisher’s or platform’s current notices for the game title alongside “server shutdown,” “end of service,” or “online services.” Read the notice for its effective date and for exactly what remains available afterward. A shutdown might remove matchmaking or online content while leaving a campaign playable; an always-online game may stop launching altogether.

PlayStation’s notices illustrate the difference: its information says MLB The Show 19 and MLB The Show 20 retain offline modes after online service ends, and that offline portions of Gran Turismo Sport remain playable after its online services ended. By contrast, PlayStation says GUNS UP! requires an online connection and will not be playable after its online services terminate. These examples do not predict what will happen to another title. Check PlayStation’s online-game support notices for the title and current status.

Test offline play before you depend on it
Documentation can describe requirements, but a test of your own copy on your own platform is the practical check. Update the game and client while connected, complete any setup, and try both launching and playing the exact mode you need with the connection disabled. If you use an external launcher, test that too.
On Steam
- Connect to Steam and update the Steam client and game.
- Launch the game once while online to complete setup and check for remaining installation or update requirements. Valve says most games need an initial connected start before they work in Offline Mode.
- In Steam, choose Steam > Go Offline, then close the client normally so its stored offline information is retained.
- With the computer disconnected, reopen Steam and test launching and playing the mode you need.
Valve warns that games requiring an active connection or an external launcher will not work offline. Steam Offline Mode cannot override a game’s own online requirement. Follow Valve’s Steam Offline Mode instructions.

On Xbox console
Microsoft’s guidance for Xbox console says games are not required to support offline play; titles marked as requiring the Xbox network will not launch while the console is offline. This is Xbox-console guidance, not a statement about Xbox games on PC. Check the game’s requirements and test the console and mode you intend to use. Read Microsoft’s offline-play guidance.
Check saves and server-held content separately
A game can remain playable offline while losing access to features or data kept on a publisher’s servers. Check separately for cloud saves, online inventory, purchased digital items, progression, achievements, and user-generated content. A working offline campaign does not establish that these services or data will remain accessible.

Zen Studios’ terms, for example, say that after support is discontinued its products’ base game will operate offline with reduced functionality, while server-side items such as inventory, purchased digital items, achievements, progression, and user-generated content may become inaccessible. That is a policy for Zen Studios products, not a promise about other publishers’ games. Read Zen Studios’ terms.
Compare games by their actual server dependency
If you are assessing more than one game or edition, record the same details for each rather than reducing the answer to a yes or no.

If you cannot find a clear answer
Ask the publisher’s support team and include the platform, edition, region if relevant, and the mode you want to play. Ask whether the game needs a connection for first activation, recurring checks, or ongoing play, and what happens to saves and purchased or earned online content if service ends. Keep the answer and date. Until you have a reliable answer or a successful offline test, treat offline access as uncertain.
