Display name vs. username

Roblox lets users change display names for free, and display names can be changed once every seven days. Usernames are also changeable, but Roblox treats the current username as the account’s unique identifier. See Roblox’s username guidance and display-name guidance.

How to search by display name in a browser
- Sign in to Roblox.
- Click the Search field.
- Enter the display name exactly as you saw it.
- Select People instead of Experiences, Marketplace, or another result category.
- Open likely profiles and compare the avatar, profile information, and visible
@username. - If you identify the correct account, click Add Friend.
Roblox’s support instructions officially recommend searching for a person’s username and selecting People. Roblox also explains that profiles can be opened through the search box, so searching a display name is worth trying—but it is not a guaranteed exact lookup. How to search on a phone or tablet
Roblox’s mobile layout can vary by app version, device, account, and rollout. The general route is:

- Open the Roblox app.
- Tap More at the bottom, then open Friends, if those controls appear.
- Tap the search icon or search field.
- Enter the player’s display name—or, preferably, their exact username.
- Open possible profiles and check the avatar and
@username. - Tap the add-friend button if the profile is correct.
On some tablets, you may reach the same search controls through Home or Friends. If the labels differ, look for Search, People, Friends, or Add Friend. Roblox’s general mobile guidance is available in its Mobile Friend Requests help page.
How to identify the correct profile
Do not assume the first result is the person you know. Compare several details:

- The visible
@username. - Avatar appearance and profile thumbnail.
- Bio or status, if available.
- Creations, badges, or associated experiences.
- Shared friends, groups, chats, or the experience where you met.
- Any distinctive detail the person previously gave you.
The key step is to open the profile and look beneath the display name for the username. Roblox identifies this as the account username in its username-recovery guidance.

What if Roblox shows several people with the same name?
That is expected for a common display name. Ask the person for their exact @username rather than sending requests to multiple strangers. You can also ask them to:

- Send their Roblox profile link.
- Temporarily change or confirm their avatar.
- Tell you a distinctive detail visible on their profile.
- Contact you through an existing chat, shared group, or mutual friend.
A display name alone cannot reliably prove which account is correct. Avoid sharing personal information as “proof” of identity.
What if no profile appears?
- Check spelling, spaces, punctuation, capitalization, and unusual Unicode characters.
- Try a shorter, distinctive part of the name.
- Make sure you selected People rather than another search category.
- Ask the person for their exact current username.
- Ask them to open their profile and copy or share its link.
- If you met in an experience, check the player list, in-game profile controls, recent chat, or mutual friends where those features are available.
- Check existing Roblox chats and friend-request history.
Experience-specific player lists and profile controls are not identical everywhere, so these options may not be available in every game. If the person changed their display name, searching the old visible name may also be unhelpful.

How to add the person as a friend
After confirming the profile, choose Add Friend. If the button changes to Pending, a request has likely been sent and is waiting for acceptance. If the button is unavailable, you may already be friends, a request may already exist, or account privacy and interaction settings may affect what is shown. Roblox says friend requests expire after two years and accounts have a 1,000-friend limit; these are secondary reasons a request may not work.

Use a shared experience
If you are still in the same experience, open the player list or the player’s profile from an in-game menu when available. Record the username before the person leaves. If the interaction involved harassment or rule violations, use Roblox’s reporting and blocking tools rather than continuing contact.

Check groups, mutual friends, and chats
A shared group, existing chat, or mutual friend can lead to the correct profile without relying on an ambiguous display name. Roblox also lets users search existing friends in chat in supported interfaces.
Try Contact Importer carefully
If this is someone you know in real life, Roblox’s Contact Importer may suggest opted-in contacts. Availability depends on account eligibility, contact permissions, discoverability settings, and regional or product availability. Use it only with the other person’s consent.
Avoid unofficial Roblox lookup sites
You do not need a third-party “Roblox lookup” service to search for a player. Never enter your Roblox password, browser cookies, authentication tokens, two-factor codes, recovery details, or payment information into an unofficial site. Such tools may also provide incorrect matches or impersonate Roblox services.
