The best Steam deal is a game you want to play, at a price you are willing to pay—not simply the biggest discount. Use Steam’s Wishlist to track games and receive sale notifications, set a personal spending limit, then check the exact edition and current refund terms before buying.
How to decide whether a Steam sale is good value
Start with fit, then price. A discount percentage tells you how far a listed price has fallen; it does not tell you whether the game suits your tastes, runs acceptably on your PC, or is worth its current price to you.

- Want to play it? Wishlist games you genuinely intend to play, rather than adding every discounted title that catches your eye.
- Does it fit? Check the game’s genre, player reviews, system requirements and the amount of time you expect to spend with it. These are title-specific judgments, so assess each store page rather than assuming a sale makes a game a good fit.
- Is this price acceptable to you? Decide on a maximum before browsing. Compare the current offer with that limit, not just with the crossed-out price or discount percentage.
This approach helps separate an affordable purchase from a worthwhile one: a low price can still be wasted if you do not want the game, while a smaller discount may be reasonable for a game you have been waiting to play.

Add games you are considering
Steam says it can notify you by email or through its mobile app when a Wishlisted item goes on sale as a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal or Weekend Deal. See Steam’s Wishlist Notifications page for the notification details. Alerts make it easier to notice an offer; they do not decide whether the price works for your budget.

Review the Wishlist during sales
Steam’s February 15, 2018 announcement described Wishlist filters for discount levels, price tiers, current Steam Wallet balance, tags and genres, Early Access, and unreleased titles. The announcement is useful documentation, but it is dated; check the current Wishlist interface to see which filters are available to you. You can read the Steam Wishlist announcement.
Use filters to narrow a long list to games within your budget or in genres you actually enjoy. Treat an alert or filter as a way to find candidates, not as a reason to buy automatically.

Set a spending rule before checking out
- Choose a maximum price. Set a personal limit for each game, or a total amount you can spend during a sale. Keep it independent of the displayed discount.
- Check the current offer against that limit. If the price is above your threshold, leave the game on your Wishlist and wait. Steam’s notifications can help you notice a later qualifying sale, but no particular next sale date is established here.
- Check the game itself. Review its genre, user feedback, system requirements and your own interest before deciding. A bargain is not useful if the game is unlikely to be played or is unsuitable for your PC.
- Confirm what is in the cart. On the store page, verify the edition, included DLC or other bundled content, and the price for the specific purchase option. Steam’s 2018 Wishlist announcement notes that buyers choose between alternatives on the store page when a product has multiple purchase options.
- Read the current refund terms if eligibility matters. Consult Steam’s Refunds page before purchasing if your decision depends on being able to request a refund. Do not rely on remembered thresholds or assume every purchase has identical eligibility.
Should you check a game’s price history?
A price-history chart can be a useful extra comparison: it may help you judge today’s offer against earlier prices, alongside your own maximum. SteamDB describes itself as a Steam database at steamdb.info. However, the available information here does not verify a specific SteamDB price-history chart, its calculation method, or coverage. Treat any third-party history as a cross-check, and do not assume it establishes a universal historical low or predicts the next sale.
