For The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, start with a preset that suits your PC, then adjust resolution, upscaling and lighting before fine-tuning detail. If you want the highest-fidelity lighting, try ray tracing or path tracing as a separate, performance-heavy choice—not as a requirement for good visuals. This guide covers the Remastered release from September 29, 2026; advice and benchmarks for the 2015 game or 2022 Next-Gen update may not carry over.

Choose a starting point: smooth play or maximum visual fidelity

Begin with the game’s preset closest to your target, then change one setting at a time. The right result depends on your output resolution, hardware and priorities; there is no universally best combination. Check a representative scene after each change, watching for both image quality and uneven frame pacing rather than judging by a single still image.

  • For a stable frame rate: start with a lower preset, use an upscaler if needed, and add demanding lighting features only if performance remains acceptable.
  • For maximum visuals: start higher and test ray tracing or path tracing independently. Keep a playable frame rate as the constraint; an option that looks better but makes movement feel erratic may not be a worthwhile trade.
  • For a middle ground: prioritize output resolution and image reconstruction first, then raise detail and lighting incrementally.

CD PROJEKT RED says higher resolution significantly affects FPS, and notes that results vary by scene, configuration and settings. Its published performance figures are targets, not guarantees for every PC.

Set output resolution and upscaling first

Output resolution is the image size sent to your display. An upscaler renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, which can improve performance while aiming to preserve detail. Try the available DLSS, FSR or XeSS option if native rendering at your chosen output resolution is too demanding. Compare fine edges, foliage and motion in the same scene; the cleanest result depends on the game build, mode and hardware.

Upscaling and frame generation do different jobs. Upscaling reconstructs the image; frame generation creates additional displayed frames. Do not treat a higher displayed frame count from frame generation as equivalent to a faster underlying render or assume it will improve responsiveness in the same way.

For the Path Tracing tier in CD PROJEKT RED’s current requirements, the stated 2160p/60 FPS target uses automatic DLSS/FSR/XeSS upscaling and frame generation. The target therefore is not a native-rendering comparison. The requirements say other tiers were measured at native resolution with upscaling off, while the RT Minimum, RT Recommended and Path Tracing tiers used automatic upscaling. Compare figures only with those conditions in mind.

Understand ray tracing and path tracing

Ray tracing adds selected ray-traced effects, such as global illumination, ambient occlusion, shadows or reflections, alongside other rendering techniques. Path tracing takes a more unified approach to lighting. NVIDIA describes it as bringing lighting and rendering into one system, with more rays and light bounces than a mix of ray-traced and rasterized effects. That can produce richer lighting, but the performance cost varies by system.

Option What it changes When to try it
Ray tracing Selected lighting, shadow, ambient-occlusion or reflection effects are ray traced. Try it when you want improved lighting effects and can accept a performance trade-off.
Path tracing A more unified lighting and rendering approach, with more rays and light bounces. Reserve it for a maximum-visuals test on hardware suited to the Path Tracing tier.

CD PROJEKT RED labels Path Tracing its most visually advanced option and gives it a distinct hardware tier. The listed Path Tracing GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 with 16 GB of VRAM. That is the named hardware for that tier, not a requirement for ordinary play. The official table targets 2160p at 60 FPS for Path Tracing with frame generation enabled; treat that as a stated target, not a promise for every scene or setup.

If you use an NVIDIA GPU, Ray Reconstruction is NVIDIA’s feature for reconstructing ray-traced or path-traced effects. It is not the same thing as an upscaler or frame generation. NVIDIA’s showcase figures of up to 385 FPS at 4K on an RTX 5090 and up to 245 FPS on an RTX 5080 are vendor “up to” figures using DLSS 4.5 6X Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction and Ultra+ path tracing. They are not typical-performance guarantees or independent benchmarks.

Raise detail settings in a controlled order

Detail options affect different parts of the image, and their performance costs are not established as a universal ranking for Remastered. Use the following as a tuning sequence, not a claim that one control always costs more than another. Change a setting only if you can identify its visual effect in your own scene.

  1. Texture quality: inspect surfaces and character detail up close. Raise it if textures look blurry or lack definition; check performance and stability after the change.
  2. Foliage and grass: inspect vegetation and distant landscape. Higher density or visibility can make the world feel fuller, but assess the result while moving through a scene rather than in a static view.
  3. Shadows and lighting: compare clarity and depth in lit and shaded areas. Test standard shadow quality separately from ray-traced lighting so you can tell which change is responsible.
  4. Water and terrain: inspect scenes where these features are prominent. Keep changes that visibly improve the image at your chosen resolution.
  5. Background characters and fine detail: use busier scenes to judge whether extra detail is noticeable during play.

CD PROJEKT RED’s 2022 Next-Gen notes list Ultra+ controls for background characters, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water and detail. Remastered has since changed the renderer and graphics system, so those historical setting names and groupings should not be assumed to match the current menus exactly. Use the options actually shown in your build.

Use this step-by-step tuning loop

  1. Update Remastered and note your installed build. Start from a preset rather than changing many settings at once.
  2. Set your display’s intended output resolution and check performance in a representative scene.
  3. If the native-resolution result is not smooth enough, test an available upscaling mode. Compare image clarity while moving as well as performance.
  4. Try ray tracing or path tracing separately. Keep the option only if its visual improvement is worth its effect on performance and frame pacing.
  5. Raise detail options individually, checking the same locations and conditions after each change.
  6. If performance becomes uneven, undo the most recent change or step back to the previous upscaling or lighting choice, then test again.

This method avoids relying on an assumed “most expensive” setting list: the official requirements warn that results depend on scene, configuration and settings, and do not establish one performance-cost ranking for every PC.

Check your build and PC requirements

CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements divide performance into Minimum, Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended and Path Tracing tiers. The tiers target 30 or 60 FPS at different resolutions; use the official table to compare the complete hardware requirements for your target rather than inferring them from the Path Tracing example alone.

  • Storage: an SSD is required for the game’s current technical enhancements. It is an installation requirement, not a graphics setting or visual upgrade.
  • Operating system: Windows 10 is no longer officially supported. CD PROJEKT RED says the game may still run, but compatibility and performance are not guaranteed.
  • Missing or changed options: update the game and confirm the installed build before troubleshooting. Windows Central reported an October 1, 2026 Patch 5.00b hotfix that fixed DLSS availability in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC version and adjusted lighting. That report concerns a particular distribution build; option availability or behavior may differ elsewhere.

Do older Witcher 3 graphics tips still apply?

Use older guides as background, not as current performance advice. NVIDIA’s original guide explains HairWorks for hair and fur rendering and HBAO+ for ambient occlusion. Its report that HBAO+ ran four FPS slower than SSAO came from a historic DirectX 11-era test, not a Remastered benchmark. It should not be used to predict the cost of either option in the 2026 release.

The version difference matters beyond individual settings: NVIDIA describes the Next-Gen renderer as hybrid DX11/DX12 with selectable ray-traced effects, while Remastered is described as exclusively DX12 and adds path tracing. Check the Remastered menus and behavior on your own build rather than copying old click-by-click instructions.
