The most reliable way to find the Light Dragon in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is to clear the gloom in Korok Forest and speak with the Great Deku Tree. This starts “Recovering the Hero’s Sword,” which puts a moving marker on the dragon while the quest is active. If you have not reached that point, scan the skies from Skyview Towers or launch from a sky island—the dragon circles Hyrule’s outskirts, but it has no dependable fixed location or in-game arrival time.
Where do I find the Light Dragon?
The Light Dragon circles high above Hyrule, mostly around the edges of the map, sometimes cutting across the interior. It does not travel underground. There is no single place to wait for it, and its position is not tied to a dependable time of day.
For exact current guidance, use the moving marker from “Recovering the Hero’s Sword.” Without the quest marker, search from elevated vantage points and be prepared to cover ground. Nintendo Life’s 2025 guide describes the outskirts route; RPG Site’s 2023 guide reports a clockwise loop of roughly two hours. That loop estimate is a guide observation, not an official Nintendo schedule.
How to find the Light Dragon quickly
Use the Great Deku Tree’s quest marker
- Reach Korok Forest and clear the gloom there.
- Speak with the Great Deku Tree to start “Recovering the Hero’s Sword.”
- Open the map and follow the dragon’s moving marker to plan an approach.
Nintendo Life says this quest begins after speaking with the Great Deku Tree, and RPG Site reports that the marker tracks the dragon while the quest is active. The marker is the clearest option because you do not need to guess which part of the route it has reached. RPG Site says the marker disappears after the quest ends.

Scan from towers or launch from sky islands
If you do not have the marker, look from a Skyview Tower or use a sky island as a launch point, then glide toward the dragon when you spot it. Nintendo Life recommends elevated observation points; RPG Site specifically suggests the Hebra, Gerudo Highlands, and Mount Lanayru Skyview Towers as regional approaches. These are useful places to search, not guaranteed dragon locations.
Make up the altitude difference
The Light Dragon flies higher than the other dragons and may be above many sky islands. RPG Site’s 2023 guide reports that it can reach 2,500 on the game’s vertical-coordinate scale. It also observes that the dragon flies lower after Korok Forest and the Great Deku Tree are healed, until the Master Sword is obtained. Zonai devices can help you gain height or close the gap; Nintendo describes Ultrahand as a way to attach objects and make flying machines.
Rank #2
- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
Is there a definitive location or schedule?
The quest marker is the most definitive way to track the dragon’s current location. Without it, no fixed clock-time schedule is dependable: RPG Site reports that dragons do not react to fast travel or time skips, and its roughly two-hour route estimate is not an official statistic. Use route descriptions to guide your search, not to predict an exact time at a particular tower.
Nintendo’s official guidance is general rather than a Light Dragon route map. Nintendo also notes that players’ exploration experiences can differ, including the paths they take to reach locations and equipment.

If you are going after the Master Sword
The Master Sword is embedded in the Light Dragon. Pulling it out requires two full stamina wheels. The Great Deku Tree quest marker helps you locate the dragon, but it does not replace that stamina requirement. Nintendo Support recommends cooking meals that restore stamina for reaching hard-to-access places; those meals are useful for the approach, not a substitute for the two-wheel requirement.
If you are collecting Light Dragon materials
RPG Site’s 2023 guide describes five material types and reports that another material becomes available every ten minutes of live play. It says menus and time-skipping do not advance that interval.
| Material | How to get it |
|---|---|
| Scale | Hit the dragon’s body. |
| Talon | Strike its feet. |
| Fang | Shoot around its face. |
| Horn | Strike its horns. |
| Shard of Light Dragon’s Spike | Pick up a shard growing along the spikes on its back. |
Nintendo Life notes that dragon materials can be used for weapon fusions, meals, and armor upgrades.
