In WordPress Admin, open WooCommerce > Orders, search for the order, and select its order number or the customer name. The resulting Edit Order screen has an Order details panel with the visible order number, payment information, date, status, and customer details.

That visible order number is not always the internal WooCommerce order ID. If a support request or integration specifically requires the internal identifier, check the order-related URL for the value used in /view-order/{ORDER_ID} or /order-pay/{ORDER_ID}, or read the REST API response’s id field. WooCommerce documents id and number as separate properties, so do not assume they match.

WooCommerce uses several identifiers and order attributes in different places. The Orders screen is designed for store staff, so its main column normally emphasizes the order number and customer name. The single-order screen then presents the complete order record in an Order details panel. That is the right place to confirm which order you are handling before copying any value into a support ticket, payment investigation, or integration.
For most day-to-day tasks, the value a person means by “order ID” is the number shown in the Orders table or at the top of the order screen. Technically, however, WooCommerce distinguishes the customer-facing order number from the internal order ID. A custom numbering extension can change the displayed order number, while the underlying database/API identifier remains a separate value.

Requirements before you begin
Use a WordPress account with order access
The documented administrator workflow requires a WordPress user with the Administrator or Shop Manager role. If WooCommerce is installed but the Orders menu is missing, or an order opens without the expected controls, ask an administrator to confirm the account’s role and store permissions.
Know which identifier the requester needs
Ask whether the request calls for the number a customer sees or the internal identifier used by an API, URL, database-oriented integration, or developer tool. Record both when the wording is ambiguous. Keeping the two values together prevents a support agent from supplying a customer-facing number to a system that expects the API id.
Step-by-step: open the order details page
- Sign in to WordPress Admin. Use an Administrator or Shop Manager account with access to WooCommerce orders.
- Open WooCommerce > Orders. WooCommerce displays the store’s orders in a table. The default Order column includes the order number and customer name.
- Search if the list is long. Enter an order number, customer name, or another value displayed in the table in the search box at the upper right. Select Search orders or press Enter.
- Open the matching order. Select the order number or the customer name in the result row. WordPress opens the single-order Edit Order screen.
- Locate the Order details panel. Near the top of the page, review the order number, payment details, date and time, current status, username and email, billing details, and shipping details.
- Copy the appropriate value. Use the displayed order number for ordinary customer communication. If a developer, payment provider, or integration asks for an internal order ID, continue with the URL or API checks below instead of treating the visible number as definitive.
Opening the order through its number or customer name is equivalent; both links lead to the same single-order page. Searching first is safer than guessing from a customer email because it lets you verify the date, status, and customer details in the record you actually opened.
How to read the Order details panel
Order number
The order number is the prominent, human-readable reference associated with the order. It is the value staff commonly quote in emails, support conversations, and checkout-related discussions. Because numbering extensions can customize the number shown to customers or staff, it may not equal the internal ID used by WooCommerce code.
Payment and timing information
The panel includes payment details and the order’s date and time. These fields help distinguish two orders from the same customer and are especially useful when a payment attempt occurred near another checkout. Confirm the date and time before reporting an order number for a failed or duplicated transaction.

Status and customer information
The current status, username and email, billing details, and shipping details provide additional verification points. A matching name alone is not enough when a customer has multiple purchases. Check at least one timing or status field as well as the customer information before passing the reference to another team.

Finding the internal order ID in a WooCommerce URL
WooCommerce documents URL patterns that contain an {ORDER_ID} value, including /view-order/{ORDER_ID} and /order-pay/{ORDER_ID}. When you are viewing an order-related page that uses one of these patterns, inspect the browser’s address bar and identify the value in the position represented by {ORDER_ID}.
URL-check procedure
- Open the relevant order from the Orders screen, or open the order-related customer or payment page supplied by your support workflow.
- Click the browser address bar without changing the address.
- Look for the segment occupying the
{ORDER_ID}position in a documented/view-order/or/order-pay/path. - Copy that value exactly, preserving digits and avoiding nearby query-string text.
- Compare it with the visible order number in the Order details panel. If they differ, keep both labels in your notes: “order ID” for the URL/API identifier and “order number” for the displayed reference.
Not every WooCommerce installation presents every screen with the same URL structure. Themes, extensions, and custom account pages can alter the surrounding address. Treat the URL method as a way to identify the documented internal value when the applicable endpoint is present, not as a reason to infer that every number in every WooCommerce URL is an order ID.
Finding the internal ID through the REST API
For an integration, the most reliable field is the WooCommerce REST API’s id property. The API also exposes a separate number property. Read the response produced by your authorized integration and map the fields explicitly:
id: the internal order identifier expected by code or an API-oriented support request.number: the order number intended for display and human references.
Do not overwrite one field with the other in an integration. Store both when the workflow needs to show customers a readable reference while sending an internal key to another service. If a developer asks for “the order ID” without naming a field, provide the API field name and value you used, along with the order number, so the receiving team can verify the mapping.

What to verify in an API response
- Confirm that the response belongs to the same customer and order date shown in WordPress Admin.
- Read the exact property name, distinguishing lowercase
idfromnumber. - Preserve the value in its returned form; do not add formatting, prefixes, or separators used only in the display number.
- Pass the order number separately if a person needs to identify the purchase in the Admin table.

The two values can be identical on a basic installation, but equality is not guaranteed. A custom order-numbering extension can alter the displayed number, and WooCommerce’s documentation treats the URL placeholder and API properties as distinct concepts. A mismatch is therefore a reason to label the values correctly, not evidence that the order is corrupt.
When the order does not appear in the Orders table
Check filters and date ranges
The Orders overview supports filtering by month, customer, and status. A filter left over from an earlier search can hide the order even when the order number is correct. Clear or adjust the date and status filters, then run the search again. If you know the customer but not the number, search by the customer name and verify the date and status in each candidate row.
Check the spelling and table fields
The search box searches order numbers, customer names, and other information displayed in the table. Try the exact spelling shown in the customer record, remove extra punctuation, and search using a shorter distinctive part of the name. Do not assume that an email address or a payment-provider reference will be searchable if it is not displayed in the table.
Check account permissions
Confirm that the signed-in account is an Administrator or Shop Manager. A user who can access other WordPress areas may still lack the WooCommerce order capability required for this workflow. Have an administrator verify the role before changing filters or asking the customer to repeat checkout.
Use the order reference when troubleshooting payments or checkout
For a payment or checkout investigation, WooCommerce recommends recording the order number, current status, the time of the attempt, and the checkout message. Capture those items from the Order details panel and the customer’s report before escalating. The combination gives a support or payment team a reproducible reference without requiring them to guess which transaction is involved.

Recommended incident note
- Order number: the value shown in the Orders table and Order details panel.
- Internal ID: the URL or API
idvalue, when specifically required. - Status: the status displayed on the order screen at the time of review.
- Attempt time: the customer’s reported time, with the order date and time used to correlate records.
- Checkout message: the exact error or message presented during the attempt.
Keeping the order number and internal ID in separately labeled fields prevents a payment specialist from searching for one identifier while you supplied the other.

Calling the displayed number the database ID
Problem: A ticket contains only the number copied from the Order details panel, but the integration expects an internal ID.
Correction: Check the applicable URL or API response, then report id and number under their full labels.
Copying a nearby URL value
Problem: An address contains several digits, and a staff member copies a query-string value or another identifier instead of the documented {ORDER_ID} segment.
Correction: Identify the path segment after /view-order/ or /order-pay/ when that documented pattern is present. If the path does not follow either pattern, use the API id or ask the developer which field is required.

Searching without confirming the record
Problem: A common customer name returns multiple orders and the first result is reported.
Correction: Match the date, status, email, billing details, or shipping details in the Order details panel before copying any identifier.

Problem: The integer in a URL or API id differs from the customer-facing order number.
Correction: Treat the difference as possible and expected because WooCommerce documents separate id and number fields. Escalate only if the other order attributes do not match.
A quick verification checklist
- You opened WooCommerce > Orders in WordPress Admin.
- You searched by an order number, customer name, or another value visible in the table.
- You opened the result by selecting its order number or customer name.
- You checked the date, status, and customer information in the Order details panel.
- You labeled the displayed value as the order number.
- You used the URL’s documented

For a normal store-admin task, stop after confirming the order number in the Order details panel. Move to the URL or API method only when the request explicitly distinguishes an internal ID from the visible order number.
