What changing permissions actually does
Every file and directory on a Unix-like WordPress server has permission bits for three classes: the owner, the group, and everyone else. Each class can be allowed to read, write, or execute. For a directory, “execute” means that a process may enter it and access items inside it; it is not the same as running a directory as a program.

An FTP client’s numeric mode field is normally an octal representation of those bits. The values are additive: read is 4, write is 2, and execute is 1. Thus 755 gives the owner read/write/execute and gives the group and others read/execute; 644 gives the owner read/write and everyone else read-only. Permission bits do not transfer ownership. A mode that looks writable can still produce “permission denied” if the account, PHP process, or web server is not the owner or an appropriate group member.
Choose a safe connection before you edit anything
Plain FTP sends credentials and file data in clear text. WordPress describes that as a security risk because neither your password nor your files are encrypted during transfer. Prefer SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) or FTPS (FTP over TLS) whenever your host offers it.

Do not guess a protocol or port. Get the exact host name, port, authentication method, and account from your hosting provider. Verify the server host key on the first SFTP connection instead of accepting an unexpected change without checking.
Back up and identify the correct WordPress installation
A permissions change can make WordPress unable to load, update, or write uploads. Before connecting, create a current copy of both the site files and the database. A file-only backup cannot restore lost posts, settings, or user data, while a database-only backup cannot restore a damaged plugin or configuration file.

- Download the complete WordPress files, including hidden files such as
.htaccess, and export the database using the host’s backup tool or database utility. - Confirm that the remote directory you plan to edit contains
wp-admin,wp-content,wp-includes, andwp-config.php. If those items are not together, stop and locate the actual installation root. - Write down the original mode shown by the client before changing it. That gives you a precise rollback value if the change has an unwanted effect.
Keep a second copy of the backup outside the hosting account. A backup stored under the same account may be unavailable if the account, disk, or permissions fail.
Open the permissions dialog in an FTP client
Generic client procedure
- Connect using SFTP or FTPS and open the remote pane.
- Navigate to the directory containing
wp-config.php,wp-admin,wp-content, andwp-includes. - Highlight the exact file or directory involved in the failed operation. Do not select the entire account unless your host has supplied a documented recursive procedure.
- Right-click and choose the action named File Permissions, CHMOD, Set permissions, or a similar label. Client wording differs, but the dialog normally accepts a three- or four-digit numeric mode and may show checkboxes for owner, group, and public.
- Enter the mode supplied by your host or selected from the path-specific guidance below. If the dialog offers “recurse into subdirectories,” leave it off unless you have checked the contents and understand the effect on both files and directories.
- Apply the change, wait for the server response, and read the transfer log. A client can display a successful local action even when the server rejects the command; the server response is authoritative.
- Retry the WordPress operation that originally failed. Change one targeted path at a time so you can identify which adjustment solved the problem.
Finding hidden files in FileZilla
Dotfiles are hidden by default on many servers. If the target is .htaccess, a verification file, or another name beginning with a period, enable Show hidden files or Force show hidden files in the client’s directory or server settings. Refresh the remote listing after changing that option. If the file still does not appear, ask the host whether the account is jailed to a different directory or whether the file is generated elsewhere.

Use a path-specific permission baseline
WordPress states that permissions vary by host, ownership model, and server configuration. The values below are common starting points, not universal rules. Your host’s documented PHP and web-server ownership model takes precedence.

For a typical single-user installation, start by checking whether directories are 755 and files are 644. If the host runs PHP under a shared group, it may document 775 directories and 664 files instead. Those broader group-write modes are appropriate only when the group membership is controlled and required.
Why wp-config.php needs separate treatment
wp-config.php contains database connection details and authentication secrets. WordPress identifies 400 and 440 as typical hardened values when the ownership setup supports them. After applying one, test both the public site and the administration area. If WordPress reports that it cannot read the configuration, restore the previous value and ask the host which user and group execute PHP.
Why 777 is not a repair strategy
777 grants read, write, and execute to owner, group, and everyone else. It can mask an ownership problem while allowing any compromised process or account that reaches the path to alter it. WordPress’s Developer Resources warns:

Never use 777 recursively across the installation. If a temporary diagnostic requires a broader mode, apply it only to the exact test directory, perform the test immediately, restore a restrictive value, and have the host fix the underlying ownership or group issue.
Fix common WordPress failures by targeting the path
Uploads fail
Find the exact uploads directory shown in the WordPress error or media settings. Check that the directory is owned by the account or group used by the PHP process and that it has the host-approved directory mode. Change only that directory, retry one upload, and inspect the result. A successful upload followed by a new “cannot create subdirectory” message means a child directory or its parent still has a separate ownership or mode problem.

Plugin or theme installation fails
Identify whether WordPress is trying to write under wp-content/plugins, wp-content/themes, or a plugin-created subdirectory. Do not make every file in wp-content world-writable. Apply the documented group-write mode to the required directory, retry the installation, and then review whether the package created files with unexpectedly broad permissions.
Automatic updates fail
Updates may need to create temporary files, replace plugin or core files, and remove old directories. First determine whether WordPress is asking for FTP credentials or reporting a specific path. A request for credentials can indicate that the PHP process cannot write as the file owner; changing modes alone may not make direct updates safe or possible. Correct the ownership model or use the host’s update mechanism when support recommends it.

An .htaccess edit fails
Enable hidden-file display, select the file in the document root, and inspect its owner and mode. The web server generally needs to read it, while only the administrator account should write it. If the file is regenerated by a control panel or security tool, editing its mode may be temporary; identify the tool that owns the configuration before making a permanent change.

Permission bits answer only one part of the access decision. FileZilla Pro documentation notes that FTP and SFTP can change permissions but not file ownership. If your FTP account is not the owner and is not in a group with write access, a CHMOD command may be rejected or may leave the application unable to write.

Check ownership and group membership
- Look for an owner and group column in the client, hosting panel, or file manager.
- Compare those names with the account used for SFTP and the user under which PHP or the web server runs.
- Ask hosting support to correct ownership or add the appropriate account to the required group. Request the exact owner and group they expect for WordPress files.
- If you have authorized SSH access, use the host’s documented account and commands to inspect and correct ownership. Do not run ownership commands as an arbitrary user or guess a system account.
Other causes include a read-only filesystem, disk quota exhaustion, an account jailed outside the real document root, mandatory access-control policies, immutable file flags, or a security plugin that deliberately blocks writes. These conditions require host-level diagnosis; escalating from 644 to 777 will not reliably fix them.
Recursive changes: useful only with a plan
Many clients can apply one mode to a directory and everything below it. That is dangerous because files and directories need different execute behavior, and a single recursive value can make scripts writable or directories inaccessible. A safe recursive workflow is:

- Export or record the current tree and modes.
- Separate directories from files in the client or an approved shell script.
- Apply the host-approved directory mode only to directories and the file mode only to files.
- Exclude secrets and application-specific paths whose documentation requires a tighter value.
- Test the front end, login, media upload, plugin installation, and update operation that matter to your site.
If your client cannot distinguish object types, do not use its recursive checkbox for a production repair. Ask the host for a documented command or use the hosting control panel’s WordPress repair feature.

Choose the method your host supports and can explain. A graphical client is not inherently safer than SSH; the safety comes from encryption, least-privilege modes, correct ownership, and a rollback plan.
Verify the change and recover if needed
- Refresh the remote listing and confirm the displayed mode changed on the intended object, not a similarly named directory.
- Open the public site in a private browser window and sign in to
/wp-admin. - Repeat the exact operation that failed: one media upload, one plugin installation, or one update. Record the resulting path and server message.
- Check that no unrelated file became group- or world-writable. Pay special attention to
wp-config.php, plugin PHP files, and upload directories. - If the site errors, restore the recorded original mode. If restoration is rejected, use the backup, host file manager, or support account rather than repeatedly trying broader modes.
Keep the client’s transfer log and the before-and-after modes with your site maintenance records. Those details let support distinguish an access-bit problem from an ownership, quota, or server-policy problem.
A practical decision checklist
- Have both the files and database been backed up and tested for availability?
- Are you in the directory containing
wp-config.php,wp-admin,wp-content, andwp-includes? - Are you using SFTP or FTPS instead of clear-text FTP?
- Is the failing path known, rather than inferred from a general error?
- Does the selected mode match the host’s owner and group model?
- Have you avoided
777and broad recursive changes? - Did you enable hidden-file display when working with
.htaccess? - Did you test the original operation and inspect the server response?
- If the change failed, did you investigate ownership, group membership, quotas, and server policy instead of escalating permissions?
