NNIDs are for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family systems. If you need an old NNID, look it up on the original console or use Nintendo’s recovery page in a browser.
Find the account used on your Switch
For Switch services such as Nintendo eShop, use the Nintendo Account associated with your console—not an NNID. Nintendo describes these as separate account types: a Nintendo Account is used for Switch services, smart-device applications, purchases made outside the console, and My Nintendo; an NNID is used on Wii U and/or Nintendo 3DS family systems. See Nintendo’s account comparison.
To check an account’s details or linked services, sign in to the Nintendo Account website, then open User information and Linked apps and services. This is also where you can see whether an NNID is linked to that Nintendo Account. If you can’t remember the NNID, use the Forgot your ID? link there.
Find an NNID on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS
On Wii U
- From the Wii U Menu, select the current user icon in the upper-left corner.
- Select the user whose NNID you need.
- Read the NNID shown in orange at the lower right. The Mii name appears separately in black; it is not the NNID.
On a Nintendo 3DS family system
Look at the top screen for the NNID in grey text beside “ID.” The Mii name is separate and is not the NNID.

Recover an NNID without the original system
If you no longer have the Wii U or 3DS, open Nintendo’s Forgot Nintendo Network ID page in a PC or smartphone browser. Enter the email address associated with the Nintendo Network account and either the birth date or nickname associated with the Mii. Nintendo says it will email the NNID or NNIDs to the address on the account. If you don’t have the required details, contact Nintendo Support for further help.

If you can’t link an NNID to a Nintendo Account
Nintendo requires the birth date and country settings on the two accounts to match. An NNID with off-device usage restricted cannot be linked until that restriction is changed on a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo also states that NNID and Nintendo Account eShop balances could no longer be combined as of March 11, 2024. Check Nintendo’s linking troubleshooting page for its current guidance. Support instructions and labels cited here are from Nintendo’s North American site; options may vary by region or change over time.
