The address you enter depends on where the Terraria server is running. On the same computer, use localhost. On the same home network, use the host computer’s private IPv4 address. For a friend connecting over the internet, use the host’s public IP, with the Terraria server port forwarded to the host and allowed through its firewall. If the host used Steam Host & Play, skip IP entry entirely: open Multiplayer > Join via Steam.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Terraria servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide shows how to identify the session type, find the right address, join by IP, configure an internet connection, and diagnose the failures that commonly make a working world unreachable.

Start by identifying how the world is hosted
Ask the host which of these sessions is running before trying an address. The answer determines both the menu you use and whether an IP is required.
| Hosting method | Where it works | What the joining player does | Does the host need to stay in the world? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Host & Play | Friends invited through Steam | Multiplayer > Join via Steam; no manually entered IP | Yes. The session ends when the host leaves. |
| Direct LAN connection | Devices on the same home network | Multiplayer > Join via IP, then the host’s private IPv4 | Yes, unless a separate dedicated server is running. |
| Direct internet connection | A player outside the host’s home network | Multiplayer > Join via IP, then the host’s public IP and port | Yes for a normal host session. |
| Dedicated server | LAN or internet, depending on network configuration | Multiplayer > Join via IP, using the server address and configured port | No individual player has to keep a normal Host & Play session open; the server process must remain running. |
The official Terraria multiplayer documentation and the Steam multiplayer guide describe the Steam route separately from direct IP connections.

Which Terraria IP address should you enter?
Joining from the same computer
If the Terraria server is running on the computer where you are playing, enter localhost as the address. This is the local name for that same machine and avoids guessing which network adapter or private address the server is bound to.
Joining from another device on the same home network
Use the host computer’s private IPv4 address, usually an address assigned by the household router. It commonly appears in the router’s connected-device list or in the host operating system’s network details. Do not use the guest device’s address: every device has its own router-assigned address.
Private addresses are intended for local networks and are not reachable directly from the wider internet. A router may also assign a different private address after a restart or lease change, so a forwarding rule can point at the wrong computer later. If the host’s address changes, update the rule or reserve that computer’s address in the router.
Joining from outside the home
A remote friend must enter the host’s public or external IP address, not the host’s private LAN address. The router has to receive the connection on the Terraria server port and forward it to the host computer. The host’s firewall must also permit the server. The Terraria server setup guide covers this server-and-network arrangement.
Joining a rented or public server
Use the address and port supplied by that server’s operator. Do not substitute your home IP, and do not assume the operator uses Terraria’s default port. Public servers can require a particular character, registration, password, mod set, or other server-specific rule even when the address is correct.

Terraria’s port: the number that must match
The documented default Terraria server port is 7777. In Multiplayer > Join via IP, enter that port when the host kept the default. If the host selected another port, enter the exact replacement instead; an otherwise correct IP will still fail when the port is wrong. A rented or public server may also use a non-default port, so copy the operator’s complete address-and-port pair.
The host must configure the same port in three places when an internet connection is involved: the Terraria server setting, the router’s port-forwarding rule, and the computer’s firewall permission. A mismatch in any one of them can look like an invalid IP to the joining player.
How to join a Steam Host & Play session
Steam Host & Play is the least demanding option when everyone is using the supported Steam setup. It creates a session from the host’s game rather than requiring players to exchange network addresses.
- The host opens Terraria and chooses Multiplayer > Host & Play.
- The host selects a character and world, then starts the session.
- Each friend signs in to Steam and opens Terraria.
- Each friend chooses Multiplayer > Join via Steam and selects the host’s session or Steam profile entry.
- If the session is not listed, confirm that the host really used Host & Play, both players are signed in to Steam, and the host’s world is still running.
No IP is typed in this workflow. Host & Play is tied to the host’s active game, so closing the world or leaving Terraria ends access for the other players.
How to join directly by IP
Use this route for a LAN world, a direct internet connection, or a dedicated server.

- Ask the host whether you are connecting on the same computer, the same home network, or from the internet. Also ask whether the server uses the default port or a custom one.
- Open Terraria and choose Multiplayer > Join via IP.
- Select the character you want to use. Terraria asks for the character before the address fields.
- Enter
localhostfor a server on your own computer, the host’s private IPv4 for a LAN connection, or the host’s public IP for an internet connection. - Enter the port supplied by the host. If no custom value was chosen, use Terraria’s documented default, 7777.
- Submit the connection and wait while Terraria contacts the running server.
- If the attempt fails, stop changing random addresses. Verify the server is running, the address belongs to the host computer or router, the forwarding target is current, the firewall allows the port, and all players are on compatible releases.
How the host finds each kind of address
Finding a private IPv4 for LAN play
On Windows, the host can open Command Prompt and run ipconfig, then identify the IPv4 address for the adapter actually carrying the home-network connection. Wi-Fi and Ethernet can show different entries; use the active one. On macOS or Linux, the equivalent network-details panel or the ip addr command displays the active interface address. The value needed by the other device is the host’s private IPv4, not the subnet mask, default gateway, or an IPv6 address.
Because this address comes from the router, it can change. If LAN players suddenly lose access after the router restarts, have the host check the current value and send the updated address.
Finding a public IP for internet play
The host can read the router’s WAN, Internet, or status page to see the external address assigned by the internet provider. That is the value a remote player needs. The router’s internal address and the host computer’s private IPv4 are different values and serve different sides of the connection.
Some internet services place customers behind another carrier-grade router, which can prevent unsolicited inbound forwarding even when the local router rule looks correct. If a correctly configured server is reachable on the LAN but never from outside, the host may need to ask the internet provider whether inbound connections are available.

- Start the Terraria server and confirm which port it is listening on. Record the exact value if it is not the default.
- Identify the host computer’s current private IPv4 address.
- In the router’s administration interface, create a port-forwarding entry for the Terraria server port, directing it to that private IPv4. Router labels differ, so look for Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, or a similarly named feature.
- Allow Terraria or the dedicated-server program through the host computer’s firewall. If the firewall asks for a port, use the same server port.
- Keep the server process running while the remote player connects. A forwarding rule cannot reach a program that is closed.
- Give the remote player the current public IP and the server port through a private message rather than posting them publicly.
When the host computer receives a new private IPv4, the forwarding rule can silently point to another device or to nothing. Reserve the host address in the router, when that feature is available, or revise the forwarding target whenever the address changes.
Dedicated server versus Host & Play
A dedicated server is useful when the world should remain available without tying it to one player’s active Host & Play session. The server program still has to be running and reachable, but players connect to its configured address and port through Join via IP. The official dedicated-server documentation describes the server configuration and the same-computer localhost route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Decision point | Host & Play | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Start the world from Terraria and use Steam invitations. | Install or launch the server, configure its world and port, and arrange network access. |
| Persistence | Ends when the host leaves the world. | Can stay available while the server process remains online. |
| Address entry | Friends use Join via Steam. | Players use Join via IP with the server address and port. |
| Control | Simple, with settings tied to the host’s game session. | More control over configuration, access, and administration. |
| Best fit | A short session with friends who already use Steam. | A world that several players need to access independently of one host’s play time. |
The dedicated-server page documents a default maximum of 16 players, marked as a configurable server setting. Treat that number as the documented default rather than an unchangeable limit; the server’s configuration and available resources determine the practical result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Version and platform compatibility
Direct IP-and-port play requires compatible game and server releases. The official Terraria cross-platform announcement describes PC, dedicated-server, and mobile IP-and-port connections when everyone is on the same release version. It describes console support as a staged rollout, so a console player should verify that the current game build supports the intended connection mode instead of assuming every platform combination works.
The announcement archive records Terraria 1.4.5 as announced for release on January 27, 2026. Hotfixes and later platform updates can change compatibility details. When one platform connects and another does not, compare the exact displayed game version on every client and on the server before changing network settings.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
DR Studios summarized the direct method this way: "If you know the IP address and port number of your host, you can type it into any client to connect to their session." Read the complete announcement at Steam’s Terraria announcement; the statement still assumes that the client and host support the same connection mode and release.

The host can play, but a remote friend cannot connect
- Confirm that the friend is using the host’s current public IP, not the private LAN address.
- Check that the router forwards the configured Terraria port to the host computer’s current private IPv4.
- Verify the host firewall permits the Terraria server.
- Make sure the server process is running and listening on the port supplied to the friend.
- Compare game and server releases.
It works on the same Wi-Fi but not from outside the home
The LAN test proves that Terraria and the host computer work locally; it does not prove that the router accepts inbound internet traffic. The remote player must use the public IP, and the host must configure forwarding and firewall access. A private address cannot be routed from the public internet.
The connection stopped after a router restart
Check whether the host computer received a new private IPv4. If it did, update the forwarding destination or reserve the address so future router restarts do not redirect the rule.
A Steam friend cannot see the session
Confirm the host selected Host & Play rather than a different multiplayer option, both players are signed in to Steam, and the host has not left the world. A Host & Play session disappears when the host’s game session ends.
The address is accepted, but the port connection fails
Ask the host to repeat the exact port. A custom server port must be entered by every joining player and must match the server, router rule, and firewall permission. Do not assume the documented default applies to a server that was deliberately configured otherwise.
One platform connects while another fails
Check whether those platforms support the same multiplayer route and whether every client and the server are on compatible releases. The staged console rollout described in the official announcement means that platform support can differ by current build.
A public server refuses entry after a successful connection
Reachability and admission are separate. The operator may require a registered name, password, specific character, approved mods, or compliance with server rules. Follow the operator’s instructions rather than repeatedly changing the IP.
Choose the simplest route that matches your situation
| Your situation | Use this route | Address to enter | Main requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| You and the server are on one computer | Join via IP | localhost |
The server must be running locally. |
| You are on the same home network as the host | Join via IP | Host’s private IPv4 | Both devices must be on the same reachable LAN. |
| You are outside the host’s home | Join via IP | Host’s public IP | Forwarding, firewall permission, and a running server. |
| You are a Steam friend joining a normal hosted game | Join via Steam | No manual IP | Host & Play, Steam sign-in, and an active host world. |
| You are joining a public or rented server | Join via IP | Operator-provided address and port | Follow the operator’s version, password, character, mod, and rule requirements. |
The reliable sequence is therefore: identify the hosting method, choose the address that matches the network scope, copy the exact port, and then check server status, forwarding, firewall access, and release compatibility in that order. Changing an IP cannot fix a stopped server, a blocked port, or an unsupported platform combination.
