Install EssentialsX by placing the main EssentialsX.jar (and any optional module jars you need) in your server’s plugins/ directory, then restart a supported Bukkit-compatible server. EssentialsX generates its configuration under plugins/Essentials/. For a reliable setup, use Paper when possible, match the EssentialsX build to your exact Minecraft/server version, run Java 8 or newer, and manage permissions with LuckPerms. Add Vault when EssentialsX must read prefixes, suffixes, or group data from the permissions plugin.

What EssentialsX adds to a Minecraft server
EssentialsX is a modular plugin suite for Bukkit-compatible Minecraft servers. The core plugin supplies common player and administration commands without requiring a collection of unrelated plugins.

- Player utilities: homes, warps, kits, private messages, teleport requests, teleports and nicknames.

The main EssentialsX.jar is the only required jar for the core feature set. Optional modules are separate jars, so you can keep a small installation and add only the functions your server actually uses.
Check compatibility before downloading
Use a supported server implementation
EssentialsX is built for Bukkit-compatible servers. The upstream project lists CraftBukkit, Spigot and Paper as supported platforms. The project recommends Paper, particularly for Minecraft 1.13 and later, because it includes performance improvements over Spigot. If you use another implementation, confirm that it provides the Bukkit/Spigot plugin APIs EssentialsX expects; unsupported implementations may not receive help from the project team.

Match the Minecraft and server version
EssentialsX compatibility changes between releases. Select a build that explicitly supports the Minecraft version and server software you are running. Do not assume that a jar that worked on an older server will work after a Minecraft upgrade. Read the release information for the build you intend to install and keep every EssentialsX module on that same version.
Verify Java
The upstream README states that EssentialsX currently requires Java 8 or higher. Your server may require a newer Java version because of its Minecraft release, so satisfy both requirements: use a Java runtime supported by your server software and at least Java 8 for EssentialsX.

Decide which modules you need
Plan the feature set before copying files. A basic server can run the core jar alone. Add the chat module if you need EssentialsX-managed prefixes, suffixes or formatting; add other modules only when their functions are required. Fewer modules mean fewer configuration files and fewer opportunities for version mismatch.
Plan permissions and group data
EssentialsX recommends LuckPerms for permissions and groups. Install Vault when EssentialsX needs to read supported prefixes, suffixes or group information from that permissions plugin. Vault is an integration layer; it is not itself a permissions editor or an economy provider.

Install EssentialsX step by step
1. Stop the server and make a backup
Use the server console or your host’s control panel to stop the server cleanly. Copy the server files to a safe location, with particular attention to plugins/ and the existing plugins/Essentials/ directory. A backup lets you restore configuration and player data if a build is incompatible or a YAML edit prevents startup.
2. Download a matching build
Obtain a stable EssentialsX release from the project’s official distribution channels. Development builds are available separately; use one only when you have a reason to test a change and can restore the previous version. If the download is packaged as an archive, extract it before installation. Do not put the archive itself in the plugins directory.

3. Copy the jars into plugins/
At minimum, copy EssentialsX.jar to the server’s top-level plugins/ directory. Copy selected module jars there as well, such as the compatible EssentialsX chat module when you need chat formatting. Keep module versions identical to the core jar. Do not rename jars unless the project documentation specifically tells you to.
4. Start the server
Start the server normally. EssentialsX creates its configuration files during startup. Watch the console while plugins load; a clean startup should not report a dependency, Java, or version error for EssentialsX.
5. Confirm that it loaded
Use the server’s plugin-list command or your administration interface to confirm that EssentialsX and each selected module are enabled. If a module is absent, check that its jar is in the correct directory and that its version matches the core jar.
6. Test with a non-operator account
Before opening the server to players, join with a test account that is not an operator. Try the commands and features intended for the default player group, then test moderator and administrator groups separately. This catches permission mistakes that an operator account hides.
Configure the generated files safely
Find the configuration
After the first successful startup, EssentialsX stores its generated files under plugins/Essentials/. Make a backup of this directory before editing YAML. Use the configuration generated by the installed release as your starting point; copying an old file wholesale can omit new settings or preserve obsolete keys.
Set the server MOTD and messages
Customize the message and MOTD settings in the generated configuration to match your server’s name and rules. Preserve YAML indentation and quoting. A malformed indentation level can stop the plugin from loading, so make one logical change at a time and restart to validate it.

Define homes, warps and kits
Choose who may set homes, how many homes each group receives, which warps are public, and which kits are available. The exact key names and defaults vary by release. Inspect the comments in the current generated configuration and assign the corresponding permission nodes through LuckPerms rather than granting every player administrative access.
Control teleport behavior
Review teleport safety checks, request timeouts, warm-up delays and cancellation rules. Safety settings can prevent players from arriving inside unsafe blocks; delays reduce teleport abuse but may be inconvenient for staff. Test requests and direct teleports from a non-operator account in each world where they are allowed.
Configure economy and command costs
If your server has an economy provider, decide which commands cost money and whether sign shops should be enabled. EssentialsX can expose economy features through Vault-supported integrations. Verify that the economy provider, Vault and EssentialsX all load successfully before setting prices; otherwise commands may fail or behave as if no economy exists.
Disable commands you do not want
Use the release’s generated configuration to disable commands that conflict with another plugin or do not fit your ruleset. Removing access with permissions is often preferable when only certain groups should be restricted; disabling a command globally affects every group.
Set spawn and world behavior
Review spawn-related options and any world-specific behavior supplied by your installed modules. If your server has multiple worlds, test commands in each world and confirm that permissions and safety rules use the intended world context.
Configure chat, prefixes and suffixes
Chat formatting is optional. Install the compatible EssentialsX chat module when you want EssentialsX to format messages or display group metadata. Install and load LuckPerms for groups, and add Vault so EssentialsX can read supported prefixes, suffixes and group information through the standard integration layer.

- Stop the server and back up the current configuration.
- Place the matching chat-module jar in
plugins/. - Ensure LuckPerms and Vault are installed and load without errors.
- Assign a prefix or suffix to a test group in LuckPerms.
- Configure the chat format in the generated EssentialsX chat settings.
- Restart and test with accounts in two different groups.
If the prefix or suffix is missing, check the load order and console output for Vault or permissions-plugin errors before changing the format string.
Set up permissions with LuckPerms
Use least privilege
Grant each role only the EssentialsX nodes it needs. Ordinary players might receive access to their home and warp commands, while moderators receive selected moderation nodes and administrators receive carefully audited management nodes. Avoid broad administrative wildcards for regular players; a wildcard can expose commands you did not intend to delegate.
Account for inheritance and worlds
When a command is denied, inspect the player’s inherited groups, context, and world-specific rules in LuckPerms. A node assigned to a parent group may be overridden by a negated node, and a permission granted in one world may not apply in another. Test the effective permissions of the actual account rather than relying only on group names.

Fallback behavior
EssentialsX can use configuration-based permissions. If you use a permissions plugin that does not support the expected behavior and you need wildcard handling, the upstream README says to enable use-bukkit-permissions. Treat this as a compatibility setting, not a substitute for a properly configured permissions plugin.
Do you need Vault?
You do not need Vault for the core EssentialsX commands. Add Vault when EssentialsX must exchange group, prefix or suffix information with a supported permissions plugin, or when your economy setup relies on Vault’s integration API. A server that uses only homes, warps, kits and basic moderation can run without Vault, provided those features do not depend on another plugin’s metadata.
When Vault is required, install it alongside the supported permissions and economy components, restart the server, and confirm that all three load. A missing or failed Vault dependency commonly explains blank prefixes, unavailable group data or economy commands that cannot find a provider.

Update EssentialsX without losing data
Routine updates
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the entire
plugins/Essentials/directory and the current EssentialsX jars. - Read the target release’s compatibility notes and select matching versions for every EssentialsX module.
- Replace the old jars with the new core and module jars; do not leave mixed versions in the directory.
- Start the server and inspect the console for migration or configuration warnings.
- Test commands, permissions, chat, economy and player data before allowing normal play.
Use the current release’s generated configuration when new settings are introduced. Compare your custom values and reapply them deliberately instead of overwriting the new file with an old one.

For an upgrade from Essentials 2.14.x or an earlier Essentials 2 release, stop the server and remove the old Essentials jars. Replace them with the equivalent EssentialsX jars, then restart. The official migration guidance recommends renaming the old config.yml so EssentialsX can generate a current configuration. User data is upgraded during the restart. Afterward, reapply your settings to the newly generated file and verify homes, warps, kits, balances and permissions with test accounts.
Troubleshoot common failures
EssentialsX does not load
- Confirm that the server is Paper, Spigot or CraftBukkit and that the implementation exposes the required Bukkit APIs.
- Check that Java meets both the server’s requirement and EssentialsX’s Java 8-or-newer requirement.
- Verify that the jar matches the exact Minecraft/server version.
- Read the first EssentialsX error in the console; later errors may only be consequences of the initial failure.
- Remove duplicate or stale Essentials jars from
plugins/.
The project’s downloads guidance separately warns users not to use Mohist. If you are running an unsupported implementation, reproduce the issue on a supported platform before requesting help.
A command says you do not have permission
Check the exact node, the player’s group inheritance, negated nodes and the world context in LuckPerms. Test with a non-operator account after each change. Operators can bypass permission checks, so an operator test cannot prove that ordinary players are configured correctly.
Prefixes, suffixes or groups are blank
Confirm that the chat module is installed if you use EssentialsX chat formatting. Then verify that Vault and the supported permissions plugin are enabled, that the group actually has metadata assigned, and that your format references the metadata supplied by the active integration.

Replace every EssentialsX module with the same release version as the core jar. Restart after removing obsolete jars so the server does not load two versions of a module.
Configuration changes have no effect
Compare the edited file with the configuration generated by the installed release, validate YAML indentation and quoting, and restart the server. If a setting was renamed or removed in your release, use the current key rather than copying an older example.
Economy or sign shops fail
Check that a compatible economy provider is installed and recognized through Vault, then verify EssentialsX’s economy and command-cost settings. Test with a controlled balance before enabling shops for players.
