If DOOM: The Dark Ages launches with sound but no visible game window, first use the fix for your PC launcher: Steam players can add +r_mode -1 +r_fullscreen 0 to the game’s launch options; Battle.net and Xbox PC players should force quit the game and launcher, turn on every connected monitor, then relaunch. These are Bethesda’s documented workarounds for an invisible window on certain display configurations—not evidence that you need to replace your monitor or graphics card.
First, identify which black-screen problem you have
“Black screen” can describe several different failures. The right fix depends on what happens when the screen goes dark:

- You hear game audio, but no game window appears: follow the launcher-specific invisible-window steps below.
- The game stops being visible after Alt-Tab: switch to Windowed or Borderless Windowed mode.
- The game launches in the background or becomes inaccessible during launch: avoid Alt-Tab while it starts; Bethesda identifies a known NVIDIA driver issue in this scenario.
- The game will not launch or crashes: work through the PC checks after the symptom-specific fixes.
If the display reports no signal, note that separately when contacting support; the cited invisible-window guidance describes a hidden game window, not a diagnosis for every signal-loss problem.
Fix an invisible game window on PC
Bethesda’s May 14, 2025 troubleshooting guide describes players hearing DOOM: The Dark Ages audio while the game window remains invisible on certain display configurations. It recommends different steps for Steam and for Battle.net or Xbox PC. Read Bethesda’s DOOM: The Dark Ages Troubleshooting Guide.

- In the General tab, find Launch Options.
- Enter
+r_mode -1 +r_fullscreen 0, close the Properties window, and launch the game.
This is a game launch option, not a Windows display setting. If you already have other launch options entered, avoid deleting them without noting them first.
Battle.net or Xbox App for PC: force quit and relaunch
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and open Task Manager if needed.
- Force quit the game and its launcher if either is still running.
- Turn on all monitors connected to the PC.
- Relaunch the game.
Bethesda’s guidance for these launchers calls for fully ending the process and ensuring connected monitors are on before trying again; it does not provide the Steam launch string for them.

Stop the screen from disappearing after Alt-Tab
If the game becomes inaccessible after switching to another window, Bethesda recommends setting the game’s Video Settings to Windowed or Borderless Windowed. The support article concerns restoration problems after Alt-Tab, rather than the separate audio-but-invisible-window launch case. Bethesda: DOOM: The Dark Ages won’t reopen after using Alt+Tab.
For a launch that ends up in the background, avoid Alt-Tab while the game is starting. Bethesda says a known NVIDIA driver issue can cause this behavior; if the window is inaccessible, restart the PC before trying again.

If the game still will not launch or keeps crashing on PC
These checks address broader launch failures and crashes, so try them after the matching display workaround. Bethesda’s PC launch checklist was retrieved October 8, 2026; its listed driver minimums are the versions stated on that support page and may not be the latest available today. Bethesda: DOOM: The Dark Ages won’t launch on PC.
Check the PC setup and graphics path
- Confirm the PC meets the game’s minimum system requirements.
- On a laptop or a system with more than one GPU, make sure the game is using the intended primary GPU.
- Update the graphics driver. The cited Bethesda launch page lists AMD 25.5.1 and NVIDIA 576.40 as minimum driver versions; check the page and your GPU maker for current releases.
- Check the DirectX runtime.
Restart and repair the installation
- Fully exit Steam, Xbox App for PC, or Battle.net, then reopen it. Restart the PC if the problem continues.
- Use the launcher’s game-file verify or repair option.
- If you have installed mods, remove them and repair the game files again.
- Try running the game with administrator permissions and check that your antivirus has not blocked it.
Reduce common conflicts and crash triggers
- For performance problems, Bethesda recommends disabling Steam Overlay; Xbox App for PC users can turn off Xbox Game Bar.
- For crashes, try lowering graphics quality and closing applications you are not using.
- Bethesda’s PC crash guidance also suggests enabling Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and checking that the game is installed on an SSD, along with repeating the GPU, driver, DirectX, file-repair, mod, and antivirus checks. These are general crash steps, not a guaranteed fix for an invisible window. Bethesda: DOOM: The Dark Ages is crashing on PC.
If you are playing on an Xbox console
Bethesda’s Xbox guidance is for crashes, not specifically for a black screen without a crash. Use it as a fallback if the display problem comes with a crash or failed launch. Try updating the game, closing background applications, restarting the game, power-cycling the console, and signing out and back in. The article also covers console ventilation, reinstalling while preserving cloud saves, and attempting an offline launch if earlier steps fail. Bethesda: DOOM: The Dark Ages is crashing on Xbox console.

What to send Bethesda Support if it persists
Before contacting Bethesda Support, record the details that distinguish an invisible window from a crash or display connection failure:
- Your platform and, on PC, whether you use Steam, Battle.net, or Xbox App.
- Whether game audio plays, whether a cursor is visible, and whether the display reports signal loss.
- Your GPU and driver version, monitor setup, and whether every connected monitor was on.
- Whether the issue began after a game or driver update, or after using Alt-Tab.
- Which troubleshooting steps you tried and what happened after each one.
If a crash reporter appears, Bethesda’s troubleshooting guide also invites players to submit an optional crash report.
