When a game suddenly turns the display black, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B first. This resets the Windows graphics driver without restarting the PC. The screen may flicker and Windows may beep. If the picture returns, switch the game to borderless windowed mode with Alt + Enter, then test the game again.
The correct fix depends on what happens around the black screen. Audio continuing usually points to a display-driver, fullscreen, HDR, VRR or monitor-handshake problem. A “No signal” message points first to the cable, input or GPU output. A system restart or stop code requires crash and hardware troubleshooting rather than ordinary display recovery.

Identify the type of black screen
| What you see | Most likely area | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen but game audio continues | Driver reset, fullscreen transition, HDR/VRR or overlay | Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B, then Alt + Enter |
| Only one game fails | Game settings, files, mods, API or overlay | Borderless mode, disable overlays and repair the game |
| Every game fails | Driver, Windows, temperature, power or hardware | Test one monitor, restore stock settings and reinstall or roll back the driver |
| Monitor says “No signal” | Cable, monitor input, GPU port or power | Reseat or replace the cable and test one display |
| PC restarts or shows a stop code | System crash, overheating, power or driver failure | Record the stop code and investigate system stability |
| Black screen during startup with a blinking cursor | Boot or storage problem | Use Windows startup troubleshooting, not game-display fixes |
Before changing settings, note whether Ctrl + Alt + Delete opens the security screen, whether the issue affects one game or all games, and whether it began after a driver, Windows, BIOS or hardware change.

Fast fixes to try first
1. Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. A brief flicker or beep means Windows received the command. This restarts the graphics display path; it does not repair or reinstall the driver. The game may still need to be restarted.

2. Leave exclusive fullscreen
Press Alt + Enter. If the image returns, set the game to Borderless Windowed and restart it. This is particularly useful when the failure occurs at launch, during Alt + Tab, while changing resolution or when leaving fullscreen.
Borderless mode is a compatibility workaround, not a guaranteed performance improvement. Depending on the game and Windows configuration, it can change latency, HDR behavior or variable-refresh behavior. Intel recommends testing borderless mode for fullscreen and Alt+Tab black-screen problems.

Press Windows + P, press P again to cycle through the choices, and press Enter. Test PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend and Second screen only.
Disconnect the second monitor and unnecessary USB or display devices. On a desktop, make sure the cable is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard video output.
4. Test the physical signal path
- Confirm that the monitor is set to the correct HDMI or DisplayPort input.
- Reseat both ends of the cable.
- Try another cable and another input on the monitor.
- Test one monitor only.
- If possible, test another monitor or GPU output.
If HDMI works but DisplayPort does not, also test a lower refresh rate with HDR disabled. Do not conclude that the GPU has failed until the cable, monitor input and alternate output have been tested.

Fix fullscreen, HDR, VRR and multi-monitor conflicts
A black screen only during fullscreen, resolution changes or Alt+Tab often indicates a presentation-mode or display-handshake conflict rather than a dead GPU.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Match the game’s resolution and refresh rate to Windows.
- Temporarily disable Windows HDR and the game’s HDR option.
- Temporarily disable G-SYNC, FreeSync or other variable-refresh settings.
- Test with one monitor and restore the second display only after the game is stable.
- Avoid changing refresh rate while the game is running.
Windows 11 per-game graphics settings
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Select the game, or add its executable, choose Options, and test Let Windows decide, Power saving or High performance. You can also test Optimizations for windowed games enabled and disabled, and turn off Auto HDR for that game.
Restart the game after each change. Microsoft says windowed-game optimization applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed and borderless modes. The behavior can differ with DirectX 12 and Vulkan. This control is Windows 11-specific; do not look for the same switch in Windows 10.
Hybrid-GPU laptops
The internal laptop display may be physically connected to the integrated GPU even when a game renders on the dedicated GPU. Test the internal screen and external monitor separately. Check the manufacturer’s graphics-mode utility for Hybrid, Optimus, MUX, Advanced Optimus or discrete-GPU-only modes.
Prefer the laptop manufacturer’s graphics driver if a generic driver causes problems with panel switching, brightness, sleep/wake or external-display output. Changing GPU modes in BIOS can leave the display unavailable until the setting is reversed, so do not change it without a recovery plan.
Disable overlays and background hooks
Overlays and capture tools can hook into the game’s rendering or presentation path. Temporarily disable:

Roll back or reinstall the graphics driver
Identify the GPU
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, and inspect the Display tabs. - Open Task Manager > Performance > GPU.
If the problem began after a driver update
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the GPU and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available, and restart.
Installing an even newer driver is not automatically the best response to a problem that began immediately after an update. Microsoft lists rollback as an appropriate blank-screen remedy.
If the driver is corrupted
Download drivers only from the manufacturer:
Use the installer’s clean-install option when available. AMD documents its Radeon Clean Install option and AMD Cleanup Utility. NVIDIA provides a manual clean-install procedure; Windows Update activity can interfere with installation.

Do not make Display Driver Uninstaller mandatory. It is an advanced fallback when rollback, normal uninstall and the official clean installation do not resolve the problem. On laptops, use the notebook maker’s driver first when hybrid graphics or display features are affected.
Use Safe Mode if normal Windows is unusable
- Hold the power button for about 10 seconds to turn the PC off.
- Repeat the interrupted-startup process two or three times until Windows enters Recovery Mode.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Choose 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
In Safe Mode, roll back or uninstall the display driver, remove a recently installed GPU utility, undo an overclock or undervolt, or use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists. Restart normally and install the correct official driver.
Perform a clean boot to find software conflicts
A clean boot is useful when Windows works normally but games fail because of a background service. Microsoft’s procedure applies to Windows 10 and 11:

- Re-enable services and startup items in batches to locate the conflict.
Common conflict categories include antivirus or anti-cheat components, overlays, capture tools, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, third-party audio software, motherboard utilities and virtual-display software. Do not leave the PC in a diagnostic clean-boot state permanently; restore normal startup afterward. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.

Check temperatures, tuning and power
Return the system to factory settings before repeated driver changes. Temporarily undo GPU or CPU overclocks, GPU undervolts, XMP/EXPO memory profiles, aggressive fan curves, power-limit changes and third-party frame-generation or injection tools.
Monitor GPU temperature, GPU hotspot temperature where available, CPU temperature and GPU clock behavior. Check that the GPU power cables are fully seated and that the power supply is suitable and in good condition.
A black screen that appears only after several minutes of heavy load, causes fans to run at maximum speed, occurs with repeated driver resets, or affects multiple GPU-heavy applications is more suspicious for temperature, power or hardware instability than for an in-game setting. AMD’s stability guidance recommends testing with factory-default settings and considering overheating or unstable tuning.

- Update the game and its launcher.
- Verify or repair the game files.
- Delete or rename the game’s graphics configuration file so it can regenerate.
- Launch with safe or low-graphics settings if supported.
- Remove mods, injectors and custom shaders.
- Try another rendering API, such as DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12, only if the game supports it.
- Use borderless windowed mode.
- Check the developer’s known-issues and support pages.
Anti-cheat software can conflict with drivers, overlays or security software in individual titles. Do not permanently disable security features. Use the game publisher’s repair or support process when the failure is restricted to one anti-cheat-protected game.
When Windows 10 or 11 itself stays black
Black screen with a visible cursor
Windows may still be running. Try Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If it opens, restart Windows Explorer, or choose File > Run new task and enter explorer.exe. This is relevant when the desktop or cursor is visible, not when the monitor has lost its signal.

Black screen with a blinking cursor
A blinking cursor during startup can indicate that firmware cannot find a boot device. That is a boot or storage problem rather than a gaming display problem.
Black screen with a stop code or restart
Treat this as a system crash. Record the exact stop code, whether it began after a driver or Windows update, GPU and CPU temperatures, recent BIOS or memory changes, and whether every game is affected. Microsoft separates unexpected restarts and stop-code errors from ordinary blank-screen recovery.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Existing PCs can continue running games, but Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates, technical assistance or normal security fixes. Do not assume that a new Windows update will resolve a Windows 10 gaming black screen. Driver availability also changes, so use the official vendor pages rather than relying on a hard-coded “latest” version.
When to seek hardware support
Stop changing game settings and contact the appropriate GPU, laptop, monitor or system manufacturer when:
- The problem appears in BIOS or another operating system.
- Multiple tested cables and monitors fail.
- The GPU disappears from Device Manager.
- The PC repeatedly restarts under load.
- Stock settings and a clean official driver installation do not help.
- You see graphical artifacts, unusual fan behavior, burning smells or visible hardware damage.
If the issue survives one-monitor testing, stock settings, a clean driver installation and a clean boot—or occurs outside Windows—the fault is more likely to require hardware diagnostics than another in-game setting change.
