Nvidia restored custom 32-bit GPU-accelerated PhysX support for nine selected classic games on GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs with GeForce Game Ready Driver 591.44 WHQL, released on December 4, 2025.
This is a targeted compatibility fix, not a reversal of Nvidia’s broader decision to drop general 32-bit CUDA application support on RTX 50-series and newer architectures.

What the driver actually restores
RTX 50-series cards launched without general support for 32-bit CUDA applications. That change affected older PC games whose GPU-accelerated PhysX implementations depended on legacy 32-bit CUDA components. On affected systems, those games could fall back to CPU-based physics or lose some hardware-accelerated effects.

Nvidia’s 32-bit CUDA support plan still lists GeForce RTX 50-series and newer GPUs as unsupported for general 32-bit CUDA applications.

The nine games included in the initial release
Nvidia’s December 2025 announcement listed these nine titles:
- Alice: Madness Returns
- Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
- Batman: Arkham City
- Batman: Arkham Origins
- Borderlands 2
- Mafia II
- Metro 2033
- Metro: Last Light
- Mirror’s Edge
Nvidia describes the change as bringing the listed games back to a full GPU-accelerated PhysX experience on RTX 50-series hardware. The practical result can still depend on the game version, executable, patches and in-game configuration.
Batman: Arkham Asylum was not part of the initial nine
Nvidia said Batman: Arkham Asylum was planned for addition in the first part of 2026. It was not included in the initial nine-title release announced alongside driver 591.44. Its availability should therefore be checked against the relevant later driver documentation rather than assumed from the original announcement.

What this does not mean
- It does not restore all 32-bit CUDA applications. Arbitrary 32-bit CUDA software remains outside Nvidia’s stated RTX 50-series support plan.
- It does not guarantee compatibility with every PhysX game. Unlisted titles may work in some configurations, but Nvidia’s official promise is limited to the listed games.
- It is not a measured performance guarantee. Nvidia’s compatibility language should not be treated as proof of a specific frame-rate increase or elimination of every CPU bottleneck.
- It is not a universal Linux, Proton, emulator or modified-build fix. The cited driver support applies to Nvidia’s Windows driver context.
- It is not a new feature for older GeForce generations. The change targets RTX 50-series cards and brings them closer to the legacy PhysX behavior already available on prior supported generations.
Why RTX 50-series owners needed the workaround
The sequence is straightforward:
- RTX 50-series introduced a newer architecture with no general 32-bit CUDA application support.
- Older PhysX games relied on 32-bit GPU acceleration.
- Those games could launch while processing physics on the CPU or missing intended GPU effects.
- Community feedback prompted Nvidia to create targeted support for selected popular titles.
- Game Ready Driver 591.44 delivered that support for the initial nine games.
This is best understood as a backward-compatibility restoration for a specific legacy execution path—not as evidence that Nvidia reversed its architecture-wide 32-bit CUDA policy.
How to install and test the fix
- Open the NVIDIA App or visit Nvidia’s official driver-download page.
- Install Game Ready Driver 591.44 or a later supported driver branch that retains the relevant game support.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Launch one of the nine officially listed games.
- Open its graphics, video or PhysX settings.
- Choose the highest available PhysX option, which may be labelled High, Very High or GPU.
- Restart the game or reload the relevant level if the title requires it.
There is no universal menu path because the games expose their PhysX controls differently. Some may require a restart, benchmark run or level reload before the setting takes effect.
If PhysX still runs on the CPU
Check these points in order:
- Confirm the installed driver version.
- Confirm that the game is one of Nvidia’s nine officially listed titles.
- Make sure the expected game executable is running rather than an alternate launcher binary.
- Verify that GPU PhysX is enabled in the game.
- Check whether a patch, mod, compatibility layer or launch option changes the executable or renderer.
- On a laptop, check whether the manufacturer requires its own certified driver package.
- Confirm that the game is running under supported Windows conditions rather than Linux or Proton.
- Remember that a title may use a different, CPU-only or 64-bit PhysX implementation from the one Nvidia targeted.
A game launching successfully does not prove that GPU PhysX is active. Likewise, poor performance with PhysX set to a high level can result from the game’s legacy renderer, CPU limits, excessive effects, laptop power settings or unrelated compatibility problems.

Should RTX 50-series owners install the driver?
Install the update if you play one or more of the nine listed games and previously noticed missing effects, CPU fallback or other PhysX-related changes. The driver may also be relevant if you want its broader game-specific fixes, including support associated with Battlefield 6: Winter Offensive.

PhysX alone is not a strong reason to buy an RTX 50-series card. Nvidia’s support plan indicates that RTX 40-, 30- and 20-series cards, GTX 16-, 10- and 9-series cards retain broader 32-bit CUDA support. For someone interested only in a handful of legacy games, existing older hardware or CPU PhysX may be a more proportionate solution than a new GPU purchase.
The bottom line
Driver 591.44 WHQL, released December 4, 2025, restored 32-bit GPU-accelerated PhysX on RTX 50-series GPUs for nine named classic games. It is a useful fix for owners of those titles, but the wording matters: Nvidia restored selected game compatibility, not universal 32-bit CUDA support and not every legacy PhysX game.
For the exact driver announcement and title list, see Nvidia’s official Game Ready release notes. Laptop owners should also check their manufacturer’s driver guidance before replacing an OEM-certified package.
