If a self-hosted Ghost blog stopped working after a Node.js change, do not immediately delete files or jump to the newest runtime. Log in as the account that owns the installation, record the Node.js, Ghost and Ghost-CLI versions, capture the first fatal log line, and run ghost backup before changing anything. Then expose the underlying error with ghost run, use a Node.js release supported by that Ghost version, rebuild dependencies through Ghost-CLI, verify configuration and database paths, and restart the site.

If a Ghost upgrade itself was interrupted, ghost update --rollback is the documented first recovery attempt. Very old 0.x–2.x installations and production sites using SQLite may be safer to export, reinstall and import than to keep patching in place.

Why a Node.js update can break Ghost
Ghost is a Node.js application, but the Node binary you use in an interactive shell is not necessarily the binary used by the Ghost service. A shell managed by nvm can point to one release while systemd or another process manager starts Ghost with another. A runtime change can also invalidate native modules in node_modules, expose an unsupported Node/Ghost combination, or leave a service pointing at an old path.
The failure may not be Node itself. A malformed config.production.json, changed environment variable, unreachable database, wrong SQLite path, incompatible theme or recently changed integration can produce similar symptoms. A reverse proxy error is often only a consequence of Ghost failing earlier in its startup sequence.

Use the first fatal error, not the last symptom

Protect the installation before repairing it
Perform the recovery as the operating-system account that owns the Ghost installation. This prevents you from backing up a different site or creating root-owned files that the Ghost service cannot later read.
- Run
node -vand save the output. - Record the installed Ghost version and Ghost-CLI version. Keep the exact output with your incident notes.
- Record the service status and the time the failure began. Preserve the first fatal log entry rather than only a browser or proxy message.
- Run
ghost backupbefore changing Node.js, dependencies, configuration or migrations. - Copy the complete
contentdirectory to separate storage as an additional safeguard.
Ghost-CLI says its backup contains content JSON, member CSV, installed themes, media, and routes.yaml/redirects.yaml or redirects.json. The separate copy of content protects files while you troubleshoot permissions, paths or a failed reinstall. Do not treat a backup as optional simply because the Node update looked routine.

Confirm which Node.js runtime the service actually uses
First compare the Node version from node -v with the runtime recorded by the Ghost service. If you use nvm, changing the shell’s selected version does not automatically change a systemd unit or another process manager. Inspect the service definition and its logs to identify the executable path and environment that launch Ghost.
Once you know the service runtime, compare it with Ghost’s Node.js compatibility guidance for the installed Ghost release. The newest Node.js release is not automatically correct for an older Ghost installation. A compatibility mismatch can prevent Ghost from loading before configuration or theme code is reached.

Do not “fix” a mismatch by guessing
- Do not assume that the Node version in your current terminal is the one serving production traffic.
- Do not copy a
node_modulesdirectory from another server or Ghost release. - Do not upgrade Ghost merely to make an unsupported Node release work unless you have a tested upgrade path and a current backup.
- Keep the known-good Node version available until the site has started cleanly and its logs remain normal.
Reveal the real startup error
Try the normal restart first:
ghost restartIf it fails, run Ghost in the foreground:
ghost runGhost-CLI’s guidance is explicit: “If running ghost restart gives an error, try using ghost run to debug the error.” The foreground command usually exposes the module, configuration, database or migration message that a process manager compresses into a generic failure.
Write down the first fatal error and its stack trace. Later messages about a proxy, refused connection or health check may simply mean that Ghost never completed startup. Fixing those secondary symptoms first wastes time and can obscure the original cause.

Select a Node.js version supported by the Ghost release you actually have installed. If Ghost-CLI is old enough to be incompatible with your supported runtime, update Ghost-CLI using the supported npm command documented by Ghost-CLI. Do not replace it with an unrelated global package or an unverified fork.
After the runtime is correct, use Ghost-CLI’s supported update or reinstall workflow so dependencies are installed for that Node.js version. Native dependencies may need to be rebuilt after a runtime change; copying a previous dependency tree can leave binaries compiled for the wrong ABI.

A safe repair sequence
- Stop making changes and confirm that the backup and copied
contentdirectory are readable. - Switch the service and installation to the Node.js release supported by the installed Ghost version.
- Update Ghost-CLI if its installed version does not support the chosen runtime.
- Use Ghost-CLI to reinstall or refresh the Ghost installation and its dependencies. Let the tool resolve the dependency tree for that Ghost release.
- Run
ghost runand watch for a clean application startup. - Run
ghost restartonly after the foreground test no longer reports a fatal error.
If the foreground process still fails, return to the first fatal line. A dependency error should be solved before investigating themes, mail delivery or the reverse proxy.
Validate production configuration and database access
Ghost configuration is JSON. Check config.production.json and any environment variables used by the service for syntax and for values that changed during the Node update.

Check these production settings
- Public URL: confirm that the URL still matches the domain and protocol served by the proxy.
- Database client and credentials: verify the configured client, host, database name, user and password, and confirm that the service can reach the database.
- Mail settings: a bad mail configuration can prevent startup or cause failures when members or administrators trigger email.
- Paths: confirm that content, logs and other configured locations still exist and are readable by the Ghost service account.
- SQLite database path: make sure it still points to the data file in the current installation, especially after moving directories or restoring content.
Ghost applies configuration changes with ghost restart. Make one controlled change at a time, preserve the previous file, and then use ghost run to verify the result. A valid-looking JSON file can still contain the wrong database path or credentials, so syntax validation alone is not enough.
Recover an interrupted Ghost update
If the failure began during a Ghost update rather than during a standalone Node.js change, take another backup before destructive recovery and try:

ghost update --rollbackThis returns to the previous Ghost version when Ghost-CLI has a rollback available. It is the documented first response to a failed Ghost update.
Other Ghost-CLI update controls
ghost update --forcetells Ghost-CLI to redownload Ghost. Use it when the downloaded release or local installation is damaged, not as a substitute for checking compatibility.ghost update --no-restartcompletes the update without automatically restarting, allowing you to control the restart separately.
These options do not repair an unsupported Node release, a wrong database path or an edited migration. Confirm the runtime and configuration before escalating from rollback to a forced redownload.
Protect database migrations
Never delete migration rows or edit an applied migration file to force Ghost to start. Ghost’s migration policy warns that “Changing or removing a migration after it has run leaves different environments in different database states and can break migration tracking.” Such a shortcut can make a temporary startup symptom into permanent data inconsistency.
If migration tracking is damaged, restore a known-good backup or move through a Ghost version path supported by Ghost-CLI. Treat migrations as immutable records of database changes, not as scripts that can be rewritten after production has used them.

Rule out themes and integrations after the application starts
Once Ghost itself starts with a supported runtime and can connect to its database, investigate site-specific code. Major Ghost releases can include breaking changes for custom integrations, heavily modified themes and headless setups.
- Temporarily select a known-compatible theme and test the affected page or admin operation.
- Disable a recently changed integration only after the core application starts, then test again.
- Compare custom theme helpers, API calls and headless clients with the requirements of the installed Ghost release.
- Re-enable components one at a time so the change that reintroduces the failure is identifiable.
Ghost-CLI notes that every 12–18 months it releases a major version that breaks backwards compatibility and requires a more involved upgrade process, including backups and theme compatibility. A Node.js update that coincides with a major Ghost update can therefore expose two independent compatibility problems.
When reinstalling is safer than patching
Ghost recommends a reinstall-and-import approach for very old 0.x–2.x installations and for SQLite used in production on any Ghost version. These environments can carry obsolete dependencies, unsupported runtime assumptions or database arrangements that are harder to repair safely in place.
Preserve the site before a reinstall
- Run
ghost backupand verify that the backup completed. - Keep the exported content JSON and member CSV.
- Preserve installed themes, media and route/redirect files from the backup and copied
contentdirectory. - Document the current domain, mail configuration and database details so they can be recreated deliberately.
Install a supported Ghost version using the documented Ghost-CLI process, import the content, restore themes and media, and test the site before switching production traffic. This creates a reproducible upgrade path instead of carrying forward an installation whose runtime and dependencies can no longer be trusted.
Choose the least risky recovery option

Evaluate each option against backup and rollback safety, Ghost/Node version support, expected downtime, database risk, theme and integration compatibility, operator effort and whether you can reproduce the upgrade later. A quick restart is not automatically the safest choice if the installation has an unsupported runtime or an unverified database.
When managed hosting makes sense
Ghost(Pro) is the managed alternative for operators who do not want to maintain the Node.js runtime, Ghost-CLI and production service themselves. Ghost says it handles minor updates and performs a compatibility check before a major upgrade. That reduces routine maintenance, although custom themes, integrations and headless clients still need testing when major compatibility changes are introduced.
