Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart by recording the complete error message and code in GOG GALAXY. The code identifies the failure class: E8 means insufficient space, E4 means a disk-access problem, E3 means Galaxy could not reach GOG servers, E1 indicates a corrupted local copy, and E2 means dependency installation failed while finalizing an installation or update. Those require different remedies, so do not begin by randomly changing network, antivirus, or storage settings.
Use the matching branch below. If Galaxy cannot complete the download, you can switch to GOG’s offline backup installers; if a browser download returns the documented 403 error, GOG recommends trying Galaxy instead. The cited GOG Support Center guidance was accessed October 9, 2026.

1. Read the exact Galaxy error before changing anything
Open the notification or download queue and copy the full wording, including the code in parentheses. GOG maintains the current mapping in its GOG GALAXY Error codes reference. Use that code as your decision point:
| Code | GOG’s stated meaning | First action |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | The local game copy is corrupted. | Try another official download route; if the game is installed, use Galaxy’s Verify/repair command. |
| E2 | Galaxy failed to finalize an installation or update because dependency installation failed at the end. | Use the E2-specific Dependencies-Temp procedure in this guide. |
| E3 | Galaxy could not connect to GOG.com servers. | Retry later and follow the current GOG support guidance; a network tweak is not guaranteed to help. |
| E4 | A disk-access error occurred during installation or updating. | Check the selected game and temporary-update folders and the account’s access to them. |
| E5 | The game was running during an update. | Close the game completely, then run the update again. |
| E6 | No valid copy of the game is owned by the account. | Confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns the game. |
| E7 | The game is no longer available. | Check the product’s availability and your account; reinstalling cannot restore an unavailable title. |
| E8 | There is not enough free disk space. | Free space or choose a destination with enough capacity, including temporary update space. |
| E9 | GOG.com servers returned an unknown error. | Retry later and consult GOG Support if it persists. |
Codes E10 through E15 in the same reference concern library operations such as importing, adding or removing games, linking, and uninstalling. They are not the ordinary download, installation, or update failures covered here.

2. Follow this quick triage in order
- Capture the code. Do not close the message until you have noted it. A screenshot is useful for support, but remove personal information before sharing it.
- Separate the phase of failure. A download that never starts or stops part-way is different from an installation that fails after files arrive. An update failure can have its own code even when the original game is installed.
- Apply only the matching branch. For example, E8 is a capacity problem, while E4 is an access problem. Freeing space alone does not address a permissions or path error.
- Retry once after the targeted change. If the same code returns, move to the alternative installation route or contact GOG with the exact code.
Keep track of whether the failed task is the initial game download, the setup after files have arrived, or a later update. That distinction helps avoid repeating a step that cannot address the failure: changing the install destination may help an E4 or E8, while it does not resolve an E6 ownership message or an E3 server connection failure. Write down the error as shown rather than paraphrasing it; GOG’s codes identify different causes.
E3: connection to GOG servers failed
E3 identifies a failed connection to GOG.com. Retry after a short interval and check GOG’s current support instructions rather than treating a router, DNS, or firewall change as a guaranteed cure. If the service is temporarily unavailable, local changes will not make Galaxy authenticate to a server that is not responding.
E9: an unknown server error
E9 means GOG.com returned an unknown error. Record the complete message, retry later, and use the relevant GOG Support article or support request if it continues. Do not recategorize E9 as a storage or antivirus failure without evidence.
E6 and E7: account ownership or availability
For E6, verify that Galaxy is signed in to the account that actually owns the game. For E7, check whether the title is still available to that account. Downloading the same files again will not fix either stated cause.
E5: the game is still running
Exit the game before updating. Check the taskbar and, if necessary, the operating system’s process list for a still-running copy. Start the update only after the game has closed.
3. Check Galaxy’s game and temporary-update folders for E4 or E8
Galaxy uses a destination for the installed game and a separate temporary location while downloading or applying updates. GOG documents that both can be changed in Galaxy’s settings in Installing, updating.
- Open GOG GALAXY and open Settings.
- Select Installing, updating.
- Review Games installation folder and Temporary game update folder.
- Confirm that each selected drive is connected, has free space, and is writable by the account running Galaxy.
- If a location is unsuitable, choose another existing folder on a drive with adequate capacity, apply the setting, and retry.
For E8, the problem is insufficient capacity. Check the free space on the drive containing both configured locations; a game can require room for the installed files and additional temporary update data. There is no universal free-space buffer in GOG’s guidance, so use the game’s stated requirements and leave enough room for the particular download or update.

For E4, investigate access rather than only capacity. Make sure the folder still exists, the drive is mounted, and your current Windows account can create and modify files there. A different folder on the same drive may still fail if the drive or permissions are the underlying problem.
GOG’s folder instructions are in How do I change where my games should be installed, and where I want to download files?.
Before selecting a replacement location, check both configured paths rather than assuming the game folder is the only one involved. A download or update may use the temporary folder even if the installed game is on another drive. If the drive is disconnected, unavailable, or not writable by the account running Galaxy, switching to a suitable existing location may be more relevant than clearing unrelated files.
4. Recover a corrupted download (E1 or a damaged browser download)
E1 means Galaxy considers the local game copy corrupted. GOG’s download guidance recommends trying another download method when one fails. Galaxy is designed to protect files from download corruption; a browser download does not provide the same protection in the documented checksum-corruption scenario.
Try Galaxy again when the alternative route is the problem
If you were using a browser and the downloaded files appear damaged, return to Galaxy and start the download there. If Galaxy itself is the obstacle, use the offline-installer route in the next section instead of repeatedly downloading the same corrupted set.
Use Verify/repair for an installed copy
Galaxy includes a Verify/repair command for an installed game. Open the affected game in Galaxy and run that command when existing files may have been damaged. GOG documents the command and its location in its support material; it is a file-integrity check, not a remedy for E6, E7, E8, or a server outage.
Choose the route based on where the corruption appeared. If the browser’s downloaded files are damaged, GOG recommends trying Galaxy; if Galaxy reports a corrupted local copy, another official download method may help. Verify/repair is relevant when the game is already installed and its files may have become damaged. It is not a general reset for every failed download or installation, and it does not change the meaning of the error code.

5. Fix E2 with GOG’s dependency-folder procedure
E2 is specific: Galaxy failed to install the game’s dependencies while finalizing the installation or update. Do not apply this folder procedure to unrelated codes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Exit GOG GALAXY from the cogwheel menu so the client is no longer running.
- Open Galaxy’s installation directory. GOG lists
C:Program Files (x86)GOG GALAXYas the default location; use your actual installation path if you selected another one. - Find the folder named
Dependencies-Temp. - Rename
Dependencies-TemptoDependencies. - If Windows asks whether to merge with an existing folder, confirm the merge.
- Reopen Galaxy and check whether the installation or update now completes.
These steps come from GOG’s article GOG GALAXY Installation failed (E2)/Update failed (E2) – Failed to finalize the update. If E2 remains, install the affected game with its offline installer and wait for it to appear in Galaxy’s Installed view. Do not delete unrelated Galaxy folders or substitute this procedure for an E4, E8, or E3 diagnosis.
Keep the scope of this repair narrow: it is for the E2 dependency-finalization failure described by GOG, not a general way to fix a client that cannot download. If Galaxy shows another code, use that code’s cause and first action instead. If the E2 steps do not resolve the failure, GOG’s stated alternative is to install that game with its offline installer, then allow it to appear in Galaxy’s Installed view.
6. Choose between Galaxy and offline backup installers
GOG provides two official routes. Neither is established as universally faster or more reliable on every network; choose according to the failure you observed.
| Route | What it offers | Limitations and best use |
|---|---|---|
| GOG GALAXY | Integrated installation, pause and resume, automatic updates, and GOG-described protection against download corruption. | Not useful while Galaxy itself is blocked by a client, dependency, or account problem. GOG recommends it for the documented browser 403 scenario. |
| Browser offline backup installers | Standalone setup files that can be kept and run without Galaxy. | Every required installer part must be downloaded. GOG says manual browser downloading does not provide the same corruption protection for the checksum scenario. |
Use Galaxy when its download path works or when you encounter the documented browser 403 case. Use offline installers when Galaxy is the obstacle, when E2 persists after its specific procedure, or when you want a standalone installer retained for later use.
The choice is practical, not a promise about speed. Galaxy combines the download and installation flow and supports pause/resume and automatic updates. Offline backup installers give you setup files you can keep and run without Galaxy, but they require the complete set of files. GOG’s guidance does not establish that one route is faster or more reliable for every connection, so base the switch on the actual failure you see.
7. Install from offline backup files correctly
GOG’s How do I download my purchased items? instructions describe selecting the game in your account library and downloading its “offline backup game installers.”

- Sign in to the GOG account that owns the game.
- Open the game in your account library and choose the offline backup installer downloads.
- Download every file listed for that game, including all numbered parts and any required language or bonus files identified by GOG.
- Keep all parts in the same folder.
- Run the setup application and follow its prompts for the destination folder.
- After installation, open Galaxy and allow time for the game to appear in the Installed view if you want Galaxy to manage it.
Missing even one required installer file can prevent setup. If the setup program reports that a part is missing, return to the account library and download the complete set rather than renaming files or trying to join them manually.
Offline installers are a useful alternative when Galaxy itself is the obstacle, but they are not a single-file shortcut for every game. Check the account library’s full list for that title and make sure all required parts have finished downloading before launching setup. If the installer fails because a part is missing, the next step is to complete the set, not to keep rerunning the same incomplete setup application.

8. Handle a browser-download 403 without guessing
GOG documents a particular cause for a browser 403: the connection may receive a different IP address when contacting GOG’s website than when contacting the file-hosting provider. In that scenario, the authentication check can fail even though the account is valid.
GOG recommends using Galaxy for this case because Galaxy uses a different authentication method. This explanation applies to the documented scenario, not to every possible 403 response. If Galaxy also fails, record its code and follow that code’s branch instead of assuming the browser and Galaxy errors have the same cause. The relevant guidance is in Download issues.
A 403 in a browser is not the same diagnosis as an E3 or E9 in Galaxy. The IP-address explanation is a specific scenario GOG documents for browser downloads, and the suggested workaround is to use Galaxy’s different authentication method. If the Galaxy download then produces an error code, switch to the instructions for that code; do not assume that the browser explanation accounts for every later failure.

- Record the exact code, full wording, game title, and whether the failure occurred during download, installation, or updating.
- Note which destination and temporary-update folders Galaxy is using and whether the drive has sufficient free space.
- Try the official alternative route appropriate to the failure: Galaxy for the documented browser 403, or offline installers when Galaxy itself is the obstacle.
- Open the relevant GOG Support article or submit a support request with the code and concise steps that reproduce it.

10. Avoid fixes that do not match the code
- Do not treat every failure as an internet problem. E4 is disk access, E8 is capacity, and E2 is dependency finalization.
- Do not use the E2 dependency-folder procedure for another error code.
- Do not assume that a browser installer has Galaxy’s corruption protection.
- Do not download only the first offline-installer file; missing parts stop setup.
- Do not buy a new drive until you have confirmed that E8 is the actual issue. If extra capacity is necessary, verify the computer’s drive type, form factor, interface, and compatibility first; additional hardware does not inherently fix E4.
Also avoid treating a repeated download as a universal remedy. For E6 and E7, GOG identifies ownership or availability as the issue; for E5, the running game must be closed before updating. For E3 and E9, retrying later and consulting current GOG support guidance is more appropriate than assuming a disk change will help. Match the action to the stated cause, then use the official alternative route or support if the same code remains.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I check first when a GOG Galaxy game will not download or install?
Write down the complete Galaxy message and error code, then identify whether the failure is during download, installation, or an update. The code points to different causes: E8 is insufficient space, E4 is disk access, E3 is a server connection failure, E1 is a corrupted local copy, and E2 is dependency installation at finalization. Use the matching remedy rather than changing settings at random.
What is the difference between GOG Galaxy E4 and E8?
E4 means a disk-access error occurred during installation or updating. Check that the selected game and temporary-update folders exist, their drive is connected, and your account can write to them. E8 means there is not enough free disk space. Check capacity for both configured locations, including temporary update data; GOG does not specify a universal free-space buffer.
How do I fix GOG Galaxy E2?
E2 indicates Galaxy failed to install dependencies while finalizing an installation or update. Exit Galaxy from its cogwheel menu, open its installation directory, rename Dependencies-Temp to Dependencies, confirm a merge if prompted, then reopen Galaxy. GOG lists C:Program Files (x86)GOG GALAXY as the default directory. Do not use this procedure for other codes.
Can I install a GOG game without Galaxy?
Yes. Sign in to the account that owns the game, open it in your account library, download its offline backup game installers, and run the setup application. Download every required file and keep all parts together; missing installer files can prevent setup. After installation, the game can appear in Galaxy’s Installed view if you want Galaxy to manage it.
Why does a GOG browser download show a 403 error?
GOG documents one possible cause: the connection can use a different IP address for GOG’s website and its file-hosting provider, causing the authentication check to fail. For that scenario, GOG recommends Galaxy, which uses a different authentication method. This does not establish that every browser 403 has the same cause.
Does GOG Galaxy protect downloads from corruption better than browser downloads?
GOG describes Galaxy as protecting files from download corruption. Its download guidance says manual browser downloading does not provide the same protection in the documented checksum-corruption scenario. Offline installers remain an official alternative when Galaxy is the obstacle, but make sure to download every required part.

Only consider extra storage if the actual issue is E8 and you need more capacity after checking the free space and both Galaxy folder locations. A new drive does not inherently fix E4, which is a disk-access error. If you do need one, first confirm your computer’s drive type, form factor, interface, and compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Record the exact Galaxy error code first, then follow its specific branch. Check both configured folders for E4 or E8, use GOG’s dependency-folder steps only for E2, and choose Galaxy or complete offline backup installers according to the failure. If the problem remains, contact GOG with the code and a concise description while keeping personal system information private.
