Start by identifying what Fortnite Festival actually sees: a completely missing device, a guitar that appears only as a standard controller, or a controller that works but does not show Pro Lead or Pro Bass. Those symptoms have different fixes. First enable Always Display Pro Parts, then verify your exact guitar model, platform and required receiver before buying anything.
Identify the failure before changing anything
“Fortnite Festival won’t recognize my guitar” can describe three separate situations:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The game does not see the device at all. No guitar inputs appear in menus or gameplay.
- The game sees it as a normal controller. Buttons may navigate Fortnite, but the instrument-specific fret and strum behavior is absent.
- The guitar works, but Pro Lead or Pro Bass is missing from the instrument list. This is often a display or selection issue rather than a dead guitar.
Test from the Festival song-part screen, not only from the Fortnite lobby. A missing Pro part is not proof that the hardware has failed: supported keyboard, mouse and standard-controller inputs can also play Pro parts, and a guitar controller can be used for some non-Pro parts.

- Return to song selection and check the instrument-part list again.
If Pro Lead and Pro Bass now appear, the original problem was the visibility setting or the way the session detected the controller, not necessarily a hardware failure. A reviewer testing the CRKD Pro Edition Multi-platform guitar on PlayStation 5 reported a similar result: Pro Guitar and Pro Bass appeared after enabling this setting, even though the default modes were shown first. That is one reviewer’s experience with one device, not a universal compatibility guarantee.
Check the exact guitar, platform and connection
Fortnite Festival support is model- and platform-specific. “Rock Band guitar” or “wireless guitar” is not precise enough to establish compatibility. Find the complete model name printed on the instrument, its wireless receiver, or its packaging, then compare it with the platform you are actually using.
Epic’s compatibility table, published April 23, 2024, listed the following examples:
| Controller or family | Platforms listed by Epic | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation RIFFMASTER | PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 | The entry applies to the PlayStation version; it does not establish support for Xbox, Switch, mobile or every PC configuration. |
| Xbox RIFFMASTER | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC | Use the Xbox version and its normal connection procedure for the platform being played. |
| Rock Band 4 Fender Jaguar | Specific console entries in Epic’s table | Check the exact console/model combination rather than assuming every Jaguar revision is supported. |
| Rock Band 4 Fender Stratocaster | Specific console entries in Epic’s table | For the Xbox versions used on Windows 10 PC, Epic specifies a Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Adapter. |
The table is dated April 2024. It is useful evidence of the models Epic documented at that time, not a universal promise that the same list covers every Fortnite update released through October 2026. Epic also says it does not test every external device. Before purchasing a replacement or adapter, check the current game support information and the guitar manufacturer’s compatibility statement for your exact model.
Use the required receiver or adapter
A wireless guitar can power on and still fail to provide usable instrument input if its receiver is missing, paired to another device, or connected through an unsupported adapter. The Xbox Rock Band 4 Fender models are the clearest documented example: for Windows 10 PC use, Epic specifies the Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Adapter. That requirement applies to those listed Xbox Fender models; it is not a universal adapter for every guitar controller.
- Connect the receiver directly to the console or PC rather than to an unpowered hub while testing.
- Use the receiver intended for the exact guitar revision; visually similar dongles are not interchangeable by default.
- Complete pairing before launching Festival, then restart the game if the instrument was connected after the session began.
- On PC, confirm that Windows detects the receiver and that the Xbox or PlayStation version of the controller is the one supported for your setup.
Do not infer compatibility from the fact that the guitar can navigate another game or the console dashboard. Festival still has to expose the instrument mapping for that model and platform.
If Fortnite sees the guitar as a standard controller
This symptom means the connection is at least partly working, but the game is not applying the guitar-specific mapping. Work through these checks in order:

- Quit Festival completely rather than only returning to the lobby.
- Disconnect the guitar and its receiver, reconnect the receiver, and pair the guitar again.
- Start Fortnite with the receiver already connected and the guitar powered on.
- Enter Festival Main Stage and enable Always Display Pro Parts using the path above.
- At song selection, test both the instrument-part list and a short song. Confirm whether fret buttons and strum input register as instrument controls.
- If the guitar remains a generic controller, compare its exact model and platform with Epic’s dated compatibility table and the manufacturer’s current guidance.
A standard-controller display does not by itself prove that Fortnite is defective. It can indicate an unsupported platform variant, a missing receiver, an incomplete pairing process, or a model that the game does not identify as a Festival guitar.
If the guitar is completely undetected
When no input appears anywhere, isolate the hardware path before changing Festival settings:
- Verify that the guitar has power and that its status light shows the expected wireless or wired state.
- Try another USB port for the receiver, preferably a direct port on the console or PC.
- Remove other controllers temporarily so you can identify which device is producing each input.
- Re-pair the instrument according to its manufacturer procedure, then relaunch Fortnite.
- Test the guitar on the platform for which it was designed. A PlayStation RIFFMASTER and an Xbox RIFFMASTER are separate platform versions even though their names are similar.
If the console or PC itself cannot detect the receiver or controller, Festival settings cannot repair that connection. If the operating system detects it but Festival does not, model/platform support and game-side recognition become the leading possibilities.
Run a controlled recognition test
Use the same short test each time you change one thing so you can tell whether the result actually changed. Start with the guitar powered off, connect the correct receiver directly, complete the pairing sequence, and then launch Fortnite. Open Festival Main Stage, go to a song, and note three separate results: whether the guitar can navigate menus, whether the instrument part shows Pro Lead or Pro Bass, and whether fret and strum inputs work in a song.
Write down the platform, the full model name, the receiver used and the Fortnite version. If you test on both solo and local multiplayer, record those results separately. This avoids calling a setting problem a hardware failure or treating a local-multiplayer input issue as complete non-detection.
Change only one variable between tests. For example, first apply Always Display Pro Parts; then, in a separate test, reconnect the receiver before launching the game. If the guitar works after one of those changes, you have a much stronger diagnosis than if you replace hardware while changing several settings at once.
Match the symptom to Epic’s known Festival issue
Green fret stops responding in local multiplayer
Epic’s v42.00 update notes document a specific issue in which the green fret on guitar peripherals can stop responding during local multiplayer in Pro Lead or Pro Bass. If your guitar is otherwise recognized and only the green fret fails under those exact conditions, your symptom matches the published issue.

This is an input bug, not an explanation for every undetected guitar. Check later Fortnite release notes to see whether Epic has marked it resolved, and test outside local multiplayer to determine whether the fault is limited to that mode.

Do not generalize the bug
A guitar that never appears, appears as a standard controller, or lacks Pro parts before a song starts does not automatically have the green-fret problem. Use the symptom boundaries above instead of treating one documented issue as a diagnosis for all recognition failures.
A historical connection workaround, with its limits
During a guitar-controller connection incident on April 23, 2024, Fortnite Festival Status suggested this sequence: choose a setlist with a normal controller, then press the guitar’s Orange button to choose Pro Lead or Pro Bass and “wake it up.” The advice was tied to that incident and date. It is worth trying only as a low-risk experiment; it has not been established as a current fix for every guitar, platform or Fortnite version.
What to do when Pro parts are still absent
After enabling the setting and restarting with the guitar connected, record exactly what appears:
| What you see | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| No device or input anywhere | Receiver power, USB connection, pairing and platform detection; then verify that the model is listed for your platform. |
| Dashboard navigation works, but Festival treats it as a normal controller | Confirm the exact platform version, reconnect before launch, and check model-specific support and receiver requirements. |
| Guitar input works, but Pro Lead/Pro Bass is hidden | Enable Always Display Pro Parts and apply the setting from the Festival menu. |
| Only green fret fails in local multiplayer Pro Lead/Pro Bass | Compare the symptom with Epic’s v42.00 known issue and check subsequent release notes. |
This separation prevents an unnecessary replacement purchase. A visibility problem needs a setting change; an unsupported platform needs a compatibility decision; a single-fret failure in one mode may be a game bug; and complete non-detection requires checking the physical connection first.

| Platform or model mismatch | The guitar powers on or navigates menus, but Festival never applies a guitar mapping. | Compare the exact model and platform with Epic’s dated table and the manufacturer’s current compatibility information. |
| Receiver or pairing problem | The instrument is missing from the console or PC, or it appears inconsistently after reconnecting. | Use the correct receiver, connect it directly, pair again and relaunch Fortnite. |
| Documented game issue | Only the green fret fails during local multiplayer Pro Lead or Pro Bass. | Check v42.00 notes and later release notes; test solo to establish the boundary. |
There are no published detection-rate or failure-rate percentages to use as a buying calculation. A compatibility table names models and platforms; it does not guarantee that every unit will work or that a later update will preserve the same behavior.

- The exact model and platform combination is not listed by Epic or the manufacturer, or the manufacturer explicitly rules it out.
- The correct receiver, pairing process and any platform-specific adapter have been used.
- Always Display Pro Parts has been enabled and applied.
- The problem persists after a clean reconnect and game restart, and it is not limited to Epic’s documented local-multiplayer green-fret issue.
A PDP RIFFMASTER is an example of a guitar Epic listed for designated platforms in its April 2024 table, but that dated listing does not prove support in every later Fortnite release or guarantee that buying one will fix a software, pairing or USB problem. Match the replacement’s platform version to your console or PC before ordering.
Likewise, do not buy the Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Adapter unless you have one of the Xbox Rock Band 4 Fender models for which Epic specifies it on Windows 10. It is not a general-purpose solution for all guitar controllers.
Common purchasing and troubleshooting pitfalls
- Assuming every Rock Band or Guitar Hero guitar works. Epic’s list is model- and platform-specific, so the franchise name alone is insufficient.
- Confusing similarly named platform versions. A PlayStation RIFFMASTER and an Xbox RIFFMASTER are different entries, not interchangeable proof of support.
- Buying an adapter first. The Xbox One Wireless Adapter is documented for specified Xbox Rock Band 4 Fender models on Windows 10, not as a universal guitar receiver.
- Treating missing Pro parts as dead hardware. Always Display Pro Parts is the official first check when a supported guitar is connected.
- Calling the green-fret bug a general detection failure. Epic’s v42.00 note describes a narrow local-multiplayer Pro Lead/Pro Bass symptom.
- Relying on an old incident workaround forever. The Orange-button sequence came from an April 23, 2024 connection incident and may not apply to a later build.
Because the compatibility table is from April 2024 and the current date is later, re-check current Epic notes and the manufacturer’s support page before asserting that a recent bug is fixed or that a particular replacement is guaranteed to work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Epic can—and cannot—support
Epic’s external-device guidance says that it cannot test every third-party device, some devices may not work with a particular console or mobile device, and compatibility questions should be directed to the hardware manufacturer. Epic Player Support does not provide technical support for external-device issues.
When contacting the manufacturer, provide useful diagnostic details instead of only saying “Festival does not recognize it”:
- Exact guitar model and hardware revision.
- Platform and operating-system version, such as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Windows 10 PC.
- Whether the receiver is detected and whether the guitar can navigate the system menu.
- Whether the failure is total, generic-controller recognition, missing Pro parts, or a single nonresponsive fret.
- Whether the issue occurs in solo play, local multiplayer, or both.
- The Fortnite version and the date you last tested it.
Those details let support distinguish an unsupported combination from a pairing failure or a game regression.

Treat the v42.00 green-fret report as a narrow local-multiplayer bug, not a universal explanation, and treat the April 23, 2024 “Orange button” workaround as historical incident advice rather than a guaranteed fix.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Fortnite Festival show my guitar only as a normal controller?
That usually means the connection is partly working but Festival has not applied the guitar-specific mapping. Reconnect and pair the correct receiver before launching Fortnite, enable Always Display Pro Parts, and compare the exact model and platform with Epic’s compatibility information and the manufacturer’s current guidance.
What setting shows Pro Lead and Pro Bass?
From the lobby, open Festival Main Stage, then the profile/settings menu. Choose Game, open Festival, turn on Always Display Pro Parts, select Apply, and return to song selection.
Does a missing Pro part prove my guitar is broken?
No. Epic says Pro Lead and Pro Bass should normally appear for a supported guitar, but the parts can also be played with supported keyboard, mouse or standard-controller input. A missing option can be a visibility or session-detection issue.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Will any Rock Band guitar work with Fortnite Festival?
No. Support depends on the exact model and platform. Epic’s April 23, 2024 table lists particular RIFFMASTER and Rock Band 4 Fender models and platform combinations; it does not establish support for every Rock Band or Guitar Hero guitar.
Which adapter does an Xbox Rock Band Fender guitar need on PC?
For the Xbox Rock Band 4 Fender models specified in Epic’s table, Windows 10 PC use requires the Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Adapter. Epic does not identify that adapter as a universal solution for every guitar controller.
What if only the green fret stops working?
Epic’s v42.00 notes describe a known issue where the green fret can stop responding during local multiplayer in Pro Lead or Pro Bass. Test solo play and check later release notes; do not use this narrow issue to explain a guitar that is completely undetected.
Does the April 23, 2024 Orange-button workaround still work?
Festival Status suggested choosing a setlist with a normal controller and pressing Orange on the guitar to select Pro Lead or Pro Bass during a connection incident on that date. It was incident-specific historical advice, not a guaranteed current fix.

Who should I contact about an unsupported guitar?
Epic says it cannot test every external device and directs compatibility questions to the hardware manufacturer. Epic Player Support does not provide technical support for external-device issues, so include the exact model, platform, receiver, Fortnite version and precise symptom when contacting the manufacturer.
The Bottom Line
Separate missing Pro parts from true device detection failure. Enable Always Display Pro Parts first, then verify the exact model, platform, receiver and adapter requirements. Replace hardware only after those checks and current compatibility information rule out a settings, pairing or platform issue.
