First check whether the black screen affects only Hogwarts Legacy or the entire Windows display. If Windows remains visible, try the game’s official shader-cache steps when the screen appears during shader preparation. If the whole display is blank, use Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting path instead. Neither branch is a guaranteed fix: the documented steps address specific symptoms, not every possible cause.
First, determine whether the problem is the game or Windows
If the desktop or other apps are still visible behind or outside the Hogwarts Legacy window, focus on the game-launch steps below. If the monitor is blank across Windows—not just in the game—start with the Windows-wide checks in the next section. Microsoft notes that blank screens can occur in several situations, including with a cursor, at sign-in, after an update, or with a blinking cursor; those symptoms can point to different causes. Microsoft’s blank-screen guide covers those cases.
If Hogwarts Legacy is stuck preparing shaders
When the black screen appears while the game is preparing shaders, WB Games’ game-specific recommendation is to delete the shader-cache folder at C:ProgramDataHogwarts Legacy. The game should rebuild its shaders on a later launch. This is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a promise that every black screen will be fixed.
- Close Hogwarts Legacy.
- Open
C:ProgramDataHogwarts Legacyin File Explorer. If the folder is hidden, enter the path in the address bar. - Delete the shader-cache folder specified in WB Games’ shader-cache instructions.
- Launch the game again and allow shader preparation to complete.
WB Games lists additional NVIDIA shader-cache clearing steps in the same article, including clearing relevant cache contents and then re-enabling Shader Cache. Follow its current instructions if the initial game-cache step does not help and your system uses an NVIDIA GPU; do not treat those vendor-specific steps as a universal remedy.

If you use Intel Arc and see a launch error
Intel documents a narrower case: Hogwarts Legacy may crash at launch with DXGI_ERROR_DRIVER_INTERNAL_ERROR on Windows 10 or 11 with Intel Arc A-series graphics. Intel says this can be related to old shaders when the game has not been played for a while and graphics drivers have been regularly updated. Its recommendation is to remove the game’s cache files under C:ProgramDataHogwarts Legacy so shaders can rebuild. See Intel’s Arc A-series launch-crash guidance, last reviewed December 17, 2024.
This documented Intel scenario is not evidence that every black screen is caused by stale shaders, or that the same diagnosis applies to other GPUs. If you do not see the cited error or use Intel Arc, follow the steps that match your symptom instead.

If the entire Windows display is blank
Use Microsoft’s general display triage rather than assuming Hogwarts Legacy is the cause. Try these checks in order:
- Check that the monitor is powered on and its cable is firmly connected. If possible, test a different cable or monitor to rule out a connection or display problem.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. Microsoft describes this as a way to wake the screen.
- Press Windows + P to cycle through display modes; an incorrect output mode can leave the screen blank.
- If the screen stays blank, follow Microsoft’s instructions for starting Windows in Safe Mode and updating or rolling back the display driver, as appropriate to what changed before the problem began.

Check whether the PC meets the published requirements
Compare your PC with the Steam listing’s requirements. They provide compatibility context, but failing or meeting a listed specification does not by itself identify the cause of a particular black screen. The recommended configuration is listed against a 1080p, 60 fps, High-settings target. Steam’s Hogwarts Legacy listing is the source for these specifications.

When to contact support
If the relevant cache or Windows display steps do not resolve the problem, Steam identifies WB Games as the official support provider and links to its customer-support site. When describing the issue, include when the screen goes black (startup, shader preparation, or later), whether Windows remains visible, your Windows version, GPU and driver version, launcher, and any exact error text. These details help describe the case; the cited support pages do not specify a response time or guarantee a particular resolution.
