If your Humble Bundle key will not activate on Steam, first confirm that the item is a Steam key, then redeem it in Steam’s product activation flow and check the key for mistyped characters. An “invalid” error usually points to an incorrect or non-Steam key; a “duplicate” error means it has already been tied to a Steam account. If careful re-entry does not resolve the problem, contact Humble as the seller.
1. Confirm the key is meant for Steam
Check the Humble page for the game or item and make sure it explicitly offers a Steam key. A code for another launcher, a direct download, or a separate account-linking process cannot be redeemed as a Steam product key. Steam advises checking that a key is intended for Steam registration if it is not recognized: Retail CD Keys.

2. Redeem it through Steam’s product activation flow
- Sign in to the Steam account where you want the game added.
- In the Steam client, select + Add a Game in the lower-left corner.
- Choose Activate a Product on Steam…, then follow the prompts and enter the key. Steam lists this route in its retail-key help.
Make sure you are signed into the intended account before activating. A successfully redeemed key adds its product license to the account used for activation; Steamworks describes Steam keys as single-use, unique alphanumeric codes that activate a product license: Steam Keys.
3. Check the characters before trying again
Copy and paste the key from Humble’s display when possible. If you enter it manually, compare each character carefully: Steam specifically identifies 0/Q/D/O, 1/I/L, B/8, and G/6 as easy to confuse. Also remove any accidental spaces at the beginning or end of the code. Steam’s Retail CD Keys guide lists these common transcription problems.

4. Use the exact Steam error to choose the next step
“Invalid” or “not recognized”
First recheck that the key is for Steam and that every character was entered correctly. If Steam still rejects a Humble purchase as invalid, contact Humble for help. Steam says customers with an invalid retail or digital key should return to the seller, and that Steam cannot provide a replacement for a retail purchase: Invalid CD key error.
“Duplicate” or already registered
A duplicate key has already been tied to a Steam account and cannot be registered again. If you may have redeemed it previously, check the Steam account you used at the time or recover access to that account. If you are certain you have not redeemed it successfully, contact Humble as the seller with the order reference, product name, exact Steam error, and any purchase or key details its support team requests. Another error message
Keep the exact wording of the message and share it with the relevant support team. The meaning and remedy can depend on the error; do not assume that a different message means the key is invalid or that a replacement is guaranteed.

Do not confuse this with a Steam-issued activation key. Steam’s separate Steam-Issued Activation Keys guidance concerns keys generated for use outside Steam and directs related registration problems to the game’s developer or publisher. A Humble key being registered as a Steam product belongs on the retail-key support path.
