Then check Windows and drivers, verify the install if you use Steam, and look for game-specific support instructions before trying invasive fixes. These symptoms do not identify one cause: the problem may involve compatibility, damaged files, software interference, or a game-specific fault.
1. Restart once and note exactly what happens
Restart your PC, then try launching the demo again. Steam’s general launch guidance recommends beginning after a fresh restart: Steam Support: Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”.
Pay attention to the point of failure. Does the game show an error, appear briefly in Task Manager and exit, stay on a black screen, or crash only after you start playing? Write down the exact wording of any error. These details help distinguish a launch failure from a crash during play; none is a diagnosis on its own.
2. Check whether your PC meets the demo’s requirements
Find the demo’s official system requirements on its store page or the publisher’s support site. Compare them with your operating system and hardware, including the listed processor, graphics card, and memory requirements. Steam cautions that launch or performance problems may occur when a machine is at or below a game’s requirements. A generic download or tweak cannot make an unsupported configuration compatible.

If the game has separate minimum and recommended requirements, note which set your PC meets. If the operating system or a required feature is unsupported, check the developer’s guidance rather than trying broad system modifications.
3. Install Windows and device-driver updates
Steam recommends updating Windows and your computer’s drivers as part of general launch troubleshooting. Use Windows Update and the appropriate official support channel for your PC or hardware manufacturer. Avoid driver-cleaner utilities or unrelated system downloads: this general checklist does not establish that a particular driver is the cause.

4. Verify the installation if you use Steam
For a demo installed through Steam, file verification checks the installation for damaged or missing game files. Steam says this can take several minutes and notes that some local configuration files may normally fail verification; that result alone does not prove the installation is broken. See Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library, right-click the demo, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish, then try launching the demo again.
If you installed the demo through Epic Games, GOG, a standalone installer, or another launcher, follow that platform’s own verification and support instructions instead; Steam’s menu path does not apply.

5. Check for software interference without disabling protection broadly
Non-essential software can interfere with a game or launcher. If the earlier steps do not help, close non-essential applications and retry. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affected the result.
If the exact error says Missing Executable, security software may have quarantined a game file. Steam’s advice for that particular error is to inspect the security software’s quarantine and verify the game files: Steam Support: Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable). Restore or allow a file only if you are confident it is the legitimate game file. Do not turn off antivirus protection across the board.

6. Follow the game publisher’s instructions for persistent crashes
If the demo still crashes, search the publisher’s support site for the game name and the specific symptom or error. Publisher guidance can be more specific than general launcher troubleshooting. For example, Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting page includes DirectX and Windows-update checks and mentions that a CrashReport folder may be created after a crash. That is Capcom-specific information, not a universal folder path or requirement: Capcom Support: Troubleshooting for Steam games.
Square Enix also recommends validating installation data for certain PC crash, startup, and black-screen issues. Follow the instructions for the affected game rather than assuming the same procedure applies to every demo: Square Enix Support: PC crash, startup, and black-screen issues.

7. Escalate with details that help diagnose the problem
If the checks above do not resolve it, contact the game’s developer or a local PC technician. Steam recommends those options when general launch troubleshooting fails. Include the details below, and attach a crash report only if the game’s support instructions request one; crash-report locations vary.
- Demo name and version, if shown.
- Launcher or installation source.
- Windows version and your CPU, GPU, and RAM.
- The exact error message, or a precise description if no message appears.
- What you were doing when it failed: pressing Play, loading a level, or playing for a while.
- Steps you have already tried and what happened after each one.
For a more specific diagnosis, the most useful starting details are the game name, launcher, Windows version, exact error, and when the crash occurs.
