Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A PS4 black screen is a symptom, not one confirmed failure with a universal fix. Start by checking the TV input, HDMI cable and connection path; then use Safe Mode to reset the display resolution. If the problem is limited to a PS4 Pro connected through a 4K receiver or TV, check HDCP compatibility before considering any data-erasing option.
Check the TV input and HDMI connection first
Make sure the TV is set to the HDMI input that the PS4 uses. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends, try another HDMI port on the TV, and, if possible, connect the console directly to another screen. Test with a known-good HDMI cable before changing console settings. For a PS4 Pro 4K setup, Sony recommends a Premium High Speed HDMI cable version 2.0 or newer that supports 18 Gbps; for basic diagnosis, the key is to substitute a cable you know works.
- No device displays through that TV input: check the TV input and port before concluding that the PS4 is at fault.
- The PS4 has sound but no picture: focus first on the video signal path—the cable, selected input, TV port, receiver or console HDMI connection. Audio alone does not identify which part has failed.
- The picture returns on another screen or cable: that helps isolate the issue to the original display or connection path, but does not by itself prove the precise fault.
Sony Electronics Support says, “A black screen indicates an improper connection or an incorrect HDMI cable is used.” See its PS4 Pro black-screen connection guidance. For additional cable and display checks, see iFixit’s PS4 black-screen troubleshooting guide. A replacement cable is useful for testing; it cannot fix a damaged HDMI port on the console.
Use Safe Mode to reset the display resolution
If the connections look sound but the screen remains blank, try Safe Mode’s Change Resolution option. PlayStation says this restarts the console at 480p, which can help with a blank screen. Once the image returns, choose a resolution supported by the display.

- Turn the PS4 completely off.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable, then press the PS button.
- Select Change Resolution. The PS4 restarts at 480p; select a display-supported resolution afterward.
These Safe Mode instructions and option details are documented by PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide.
If Safe Mode does not appear
Check the HDMI connection and try another HDMI, USB or power cable, then attempt Safe Mode again. PlayStation also advises turning off the console, unplugging it for 20 minutes, reconnecting it and trying again. If the Safe Mode menu still will not display, continue with the hardware and repair checks below rather than selecting a destructive option without a picture.

For PS4 Pro: check 4K and HDCP compatibility
This check applies to the PS4 Pro, especially when it is connected to a 4K television through an AV receiver or home-theater device. The TV’s chosen HDMI port, cable and every device in the signal chain need to support HDCP 2.2 for a compatible 4K setup. Check the TV and receiver specifications, and try connecting the PS4 Pro directly to the TV to bypass an intermediate device.
If the AV device does not support HDCP 2.2, Sony recommends a direct PS4 Pro-to-TV connection and using optical audio or HDMI ARC for audio equipment. Sony specifies the PS4 Pro-supplied cable or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable version 2.0 or newer supporting 18 Gbps. See Sony’s PS4 Pro 4K and HDCP guidance.

On PS4 Pro, Safe Mode includes Set HDCP Mode. Selecting HDCP 1.40 Only may restore a picture if the 4K chain is incompatible, but Sony warns that output may then be limited to 1080p. This is a targeted compatibility workaround, not a general fix for every PS4 black screen; changing HDCP can also affect streaming apps.
Understand the risk before using PS4 repair options
Do not start with initialization. Safe Mode options have different consequences, and the two initialization choices erase user data. Back up your data before choosing any option that warns it will delete data.

If another screen and a known-good cable still produce no picture, or the console’s HDMI connector is visibly damaged, the fault may be inside the console and a settings change may not fix it. iFixit notes that a failed console HDMI connection may require hardware repair; the exact repair depends on the PS4 model and diagnosis, so do not assume a particular replacement part is right.
