A PS4 controller that “won’t connect” can be failing at four different points: it may have no power, Windows may not detect it over USB or Bluetooth, Windows may connect but receive no input, or the game may not support the controller natively. Start with a wired test and work forward. Do not install DS4Windows until you know Windows can see the controller.
Quick fix checklist
- Charge the controller.
- Try a known-good micro-USB data cable and another USB port.
- Reset the controller by holding its rear reset button for at least five seconds.
- Remove the old Wireless Controller Bluetooth entry from Windows.
- Pair again by holding Share + PS until the light bar flashes.
- Update the PC or Bluetooth adapter’s driver from its manufacturer.
- Test controller input in Windows or Steam before launching a game.
- Use Steam Input or DS4Windows only when the game, rather than Windows, is the problem.
First, identify what “won’t connect” means
The light bar and Windows behavior usually reveal where the failure is happening:

A genuine or compatible DUALSHOCK 4 can connect to Windows through a compatible micro-USB data cable, built-in Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter, or Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor. Sony’s instructions are documented in its PC gaming support guide. Third-party PS4-style controllers may use different buttons, drivers, or receivers, so verify the model before following DUALSHOCK 4-specific steps.

A wired connection is the quickest way to determine whether the controller itself works. It also avoids Bluetooth pairing, radio interference, and adapter problems.

- Hold the PS button until the light turns off.
- Connect the controller directly to the PC, not an unpowered USB hub.
- Try a different USB port.
- Try another known-good micro-USB cable that explicitly supports data transfer.
- Leave it connected for a few seconds, then press PS.
- Check whether Windows detects the controller before opening a game.
Many micro-USB cables provide power but do not carry data. The controller may charge and light up while remaining invisible to Windows. If several known-good data cables and USB ports fail, inspect the controller’s micro-USB socket for looseness or damage. A USB connection is useful for diagnosis, but it is not guaranteed if the socket or cable is faulty.
If the controller works over USB but not Bluetooth, its basic controls are probably functional. Concentrate on Bluetooth pairing, drivers, range, and interference rather than reinstalling game software.
Reset the DUALSHOCK 4
Resetting clears the controller’s connection state. It does not repair a damaged cable, battery, USB port, Bluetooth adapter, or controller radio.

- Disconnect the controller from USB.
- Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller.
- Insert a straightened paper clip or similar tool.
- Hold the reset button for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect it with a known-good data cable and press PS, or pair it over Bluetooth again.

Pair the controller over Bluetooth
The controller must be in pairing mode. Pressing PS alone is not enough, and the USB cable must be disconnected.
- Turn off the controller by holding PS until the light bar goes out.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Hold Share and PS together until the light bar flashes.
- In Windows 11, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth.
- In Windows 10, open Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices → Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Select Wireless Controller and wait for pairing to finish.
- Press PS once to test it.
Windows labels can vary slightly by update. The flashing light should appear in the Bluetooth device list; after pairing, Windows should show the controller as connected. Sony notes that a DUALSHOCK 4 can be paired with only one device at a time. If you recently used it with a PS4, phone, or another computer, it may need to be paired again.
If Wireless Controller does not appear
- Confirm that the light bar is actually flashing.
- Move the controller close to the PC.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on, then restart Windows.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth devices.
- Try the PC’s built-in Bluetooth instead of a USB adapter, or the reverse.
Remove a stale Bluetooth pairing
Windows can retain a damaged pairing entry and report a controller as connected even when it is unusable.

- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or the Bluetooth device page in Windows 10.
- Find Wireless Controller.
- Choose Remove device.
- Restart the PC.
- Reset the controller if necessary.
- Enter pairing mode with Share + PS, then choose Add device → Bluetooth.
This targeted removal is preferable to immediately reinstalling every Bluetooth device. Microsoft also recommends removing and pairing a Bluetooth device again when its existing connection is not working; its guidance covers Bluetooth drivers, range, power, and troubleshooting.

Repair Bluetooth on the PC
Wireless pairing requires working Bluetooth hardware. Many desktop PCs do not include Bluetooth, even if Windows displays Bluetooth settings. If yours lacks usable Bluetooth, you need a USB Bluetooth adapter or a compatible Sony wireless adaptor.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled in Windows.
- Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter through the Get Help app where available.
- Open Device Manager and expand Bluetooth.
- Look for a disabled adapter or a warning icon.
- Update the Bluetooth driver.
- If Windows cannot find one, download it from the PC, motherboard, laptop, or adapter manufacturer—not a random driver-download site.
- Restart Windows after installing the driver.
Microsoft identifies low battery, range, driver state, and Windows configuration as common Bluetooth factors. It also warns that USB 3.0 devices can interfere with nearby Bluetooth hardware. If you use a USB adapter, try a different port or a short USB extension cable that places the adapter away from the PC’s metal case, USB 3.0 drives, hubs, and other radio equipment.
Use only one Bluetooth adapter while testing. Multiple adapters can make it unclear which device Windows is using.
When Windows connects but the game does not
Pairing and game compatibility are separate problems. A connected DUALSHOCK 4 does not guarantee that every Windows game supports PlayStation controller input.

Test input outside the game first. Windows controller settings can help confirm that the device is present, and Steam provides an input test at Steam → Settings → Controller → Test Input. Microsoft explains this distinction in its Windows controller guide.
Steam games
- Close the game.
- Open Steam’s controller settings and confirm that Steam detects the DUALSHOCK 4.
- Run Test Input.
- Enable Steam Input or PlayStation controller support as appropriate.
- Restart the game.
Steam Input can translate the controller into an Xbox-style XInput device. If a game displays Xbox button prompts, that may be expected rather than a connection failure. If Steam Input causes double inputs, or the game has reliable native DualShock support, test with Steam Input disabled for that title.
Steam Input cannot fix Bluetooth pairing. It becomes relevant only after Windows or Steam can see the controller.
Non-Steam games
Some PC games support Xbox/XInput controllers but not DirectInput or PlayStation controllers. In that case, DS4Windows can map the DUALSHOCK 4 and present a virtual controller. It is an optional input mapper, not an official Sony repair utility.

Use it for a non-Steam game that needs XInput, or when you need profiles and remapping. Download it only from the official project site or repository. DS4Windows may use supporting components such as ViGEmBus, and its documentation notes that adapter quality, interference, and USB-port choice can affect Bluetooth stability.
Do not run DS4Windows alongside Steam Input, reWASD, DualSenseX, or another mapper while diagnosing a problem unless you have a specific reason. The physical controller and virtual Xbox controller may both be exposed to the game, causing double inputs. DS4Windows cannot help if Windows cannot detect the controller in the first place.

- Charge the controller: low battery can cause pairing or connection failures.
- Reduce distance: test close to the PC before moving back to your normal position.
- Reduce interference: move a USB Bluetooth adapter away from USB 3.0 ports, hubs, Wi-Fi equipment, and metal obstructions.
- Update the driver: use the computer or adapter manufacturer’s current Bluetooth driver.
- Clear the pairing: remove Wireless Controller and pair it again.
- Close input tools: temporarily exit Steam, DS4Windows, reWASD, DualSenseX, and similar software to isolate conflicts.
If Bluetooth remains unstable, test the controller on another PC, a PS4, or another compatible device. DS4Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooting documentation also identifies adapter compatibility and interference as possible causes.

Know the PC limitations
Successful pairing does not mean every DUALSHOCK 4 feature will work. Sony says that rumble, motion controls, and headset-jack audio may not be available on PC. Actual support varies by game, connection method, driver, and input layer. A controller can therefore be fully usable for buttons and sticks while lacking vibration, motion input, or audio support.
When hardware is probably defective
Use controlled tests rather than buying accessories at random:
- Try another known-good data cable.
- Try another USB port without a hub.
- Test the controller on another PC or the original PS4.
- Test another controller on the same PC.

A USB Bluetooth adapter is worth considering only when the PC lacks usable Bluetooth, its built-in adapter is defective, or its antenna has poor range. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor is a dedicated option, but availability varies and it is unnecessary when ordinary USB or Bluetooth already works. Start with a data cable or existing Bluetooth before buying hardware.
