First check whether your character uses a Jagex Account or a legacy RuneScape account: their setup and recovery steps differ. Jagex calls the feature “two-step authentication.”
First, identify your account type
If you upgraded your character to a Jagex Account, use Jagex Account management and its two-step authentication instructions. The legacy authenticator guide is for accounts that have not been upgraded; Jagex directs upgraded players to the separate Jagex Account process (Jagex Account two-step authentication; legacy RuneScape authentication).
Set up an authenticator on a Jagex Account
Jagex Accounts require at least one two-step option. Email security codes are enabled by default; adding an authenticator app gives you a code source distinct from your email inbox. Adding the app does not automatically switch off email codes.
- Go to Jagex Account management by navigating to the official Jagex site directly.
- Open Two-step Authentication, enable Security codes via authenticator app, and follow the on-screen prompts to connect your app.
- Save the backup codes somewhere secure and separate from the phone holding the authenticator. Do not share them.
- Choose whether to keep email codes enabled. At least one two-step option must remain on.
- Use a unique password for the Jagex Account and separately secure the email account used to sign in, including enabling that inbox’s own two-step protection.
Jagex allows an account to generate 10 backup codes. Each code works once; using one bypasses two-step authentication and grants full account access. If you use a code, sign in and establish an authentication method you can access. Generating a replacement set disables all previously generated codes (Jagex Account two-step authentication).

Enable an authenticator on a legacy RuneScape account
Jagex’s legacy instructions cover RuneScape and Old School RuneScape accounts that have not been upgraded to a Jagex Account. The guide recommends Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.
- Sign in and open the account’s authenticator settings.
- Select Enable Authenticator.
- Scan the displayed QR code with your authenticator app.
- Enter the six-digit code the app generates to complete setup.
If a correctly entered code is rejected, Jagex advises checking that the computer and mobile device have matching time and time-zone settings. If the character has been upgraded, use the Jagex Account setup instead (Jagex legacy authentication).

Got a new device or lost your phone?
Jagex Account
If you used a supported authenticator ecosystem that syncs codes, install the app on the new device and sign in to the same ecosystem account; the codes may then be available. If they are not, use a saved Jagex Account backup code to sign in, then set up an authentication method available on the new device. If backup codes were your only method and you have lost them too, Jagex directs you to Support (Jagex Account two-step authentication).
Legacy account
Google or Microsoft authenticator users may be able to transfer codes to another device. If you need to disable the old authenticator, the process can depend on access to the registered email. If you cannot access that email, Jagex says to submit an account recovery request first (Jagex legacy authentication).

Do not begin by removing a working authenticator just because you have a replacement phone. First check whether you can sync or transfer its codes, or otherwise preserve a working sign-in route.
Strengthen the account beyond the authenticator
Two-step authentication adds a barrier if someone learns your password, but it cannot stop every route into an account. Jagex warns that compromised email, malware, phishing, physical access to a device, insecure authenticator backups, or an existing session or linked login can undermine protection (Jagex Account security tips; legacy RuneScape security tips).

- Use separate passwords. Choose a unique password for Jagex and another for email. Jagex states that Jagex Account passwords can be 8–64 characters; a password manager can help manage unique credentials.
- Protect your inbox. Turn on the email provider’s two-step protection. If you suspect compromise, review unfamiliar forwarding rules or filters as well as changing the password.
- Secure your devices. Use device locks, keep phones and computers up to date, and follow Jagex’s advice to run regular antivirus and anti-spyware scans.
- Review linked sign-ins. Check connected Google, Apple, Steam, or other logins and remove links you do not recognize. Jagex warns that an unknown linked login may retain access even after a password change.
- End sessions when needed. If you suspect someone else is signed in, end active sessions and follow Jagex’s recovery guidance.
- Use a Bank PIN as a separate legacy safeguard. For legacy accounts, Jagex says the delay before removing a Bank PIN can be set to three or seven days. A PIN adds a barrier around bank items; it does not replace login authentication.
- Avoid login links in messages. Navigate directly to official Jagex account settings rather than following a sign-in link from an email, chat, or social post. Jagex warns about phishing and fake sites (legacy authentication; Jagex Account security tips; Jagex Account upgrade guidance).
If you think someone has accessed your account
- Secure the email account tied to RuneScape and check its forwarding rules and filters.
- Check the phone and computer for suspicious access or malware and secure them.
- Change account credentials, end active sessions, and review linked third-party sign-ins; remove any you do not recognize.
- Use Jagex’s account recovery guidance if you cannot sign in or restore a two-step method.
A password change alone may not remove access through an active session or an unknown linked login, so review those routes too (Jagex Account security tips; legacy RuneScape security tips).
