If the update remains frozen, PlayStation’s published guidance does not describe a special mid-installation recovery procedure. Avoid interrupting the installation or trying unverified button sequences; use the supported checks below, then contact PlayStation Support if it still will not complete.
The right next step depends on where you started. A PS5 update is offered through the console’s device-software menu alongside PS5 system software updates. The Windows route uses the PS Link PC Driver, internet access, and a USB cable. If the headset is also malfunctioning, PlayStation documents a headset reset, but that reset is not presented as a way to repair an update frozen in progress.

Choose an update route
PlayStation supports headset and PlayStation Link adapter updates through PS5 system software updates, and through the PS Link PC Driver on Windows 10 or Windows 11. The PC route is an alternative if the PS5 route is unavailable or unsuccessful. PlayStation does not publish comparative update speeds or success rates for the two methods.
Before troubleshooting, identify which device is being updated and which host you are using. The PULSE Elite headset and its USB adapter are distinct PS Link devices, and the PC Driver can support firmware updates for both. If both the adapter and headset have updates pending on PC, PlayStation says to update the adapter first. That ordering is useful when you see updates offered for both; it does not mean that every stalled headset update is caused by an adapter problem.

Use the route whose requirements you can meet rather than assuming that one is faster or more reliable: PlayStation’s published information reviewed here does not compare the routes by speed, success rate, or failure frequency. The PS5 route is managed through console system software and its PS Link device-software menu. The PC route is managed through the official driver and requires a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer, internet access, and a USB cable for device updates.
Update the headset from a PS5
- Install any available PS5 system software update. PlayStation says headset and PlayStation Link adapter updates are added with PS5 system software updates.
- Make the headset or adapter available to the console, then open Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update.
- If the console shows an update prompt, follow the on-screen instructions and let the process run.
- If there is no update prompt, the console is not offering an update at that time. If the update is offered but will not complete, try the Windows PC route below rather than attempting an undocumented recovery sequence.
PlayStation’s device-software menu and update information are documented in its accessories support guidance and PULSE Elite connection instructions.
If the console does not show an update
A missing prompt and a failed update are different situations. If the menu does not offer an update, the console is not currently presenting an update for that device. The documented next check is to make sure the PS5 system software is current, then revisit the PS Link Device Software Update area with the headset or adapter available to the console. Do not assume that a missing prompt means the headset is broken or that an update has failed; it may simply mean there is no update being offered through that route at that time.
Recommended Free Tools
If you expected an update but the console still shows none, you can use the supported Windows PC route instead, provided you have the required PC, driver, internet access, and cable. The published guidance does not promise that the PC route will offer a particular update that the PS5 does not, so treat it as an alternate supported method rather than a guaranteed workaround.
If the PS5 presents an update but it appears stuck
Follow the console’s on-screen instructions and allow the update process to run. The available official pages do not give a timeout after which an update should be considered frozen, nor do they describe a special button combination or recovery mode for a PULSE Elite update that has stopped mid-installation. For that reason, do not infer a recovery procedure from generic headset reset instructions or from the pairing-wipe steps described later in this article.
If the update does not complete, avoid deliberately disconnecting the headset or adapter during installation, repeatedly restarting the process, or using an unverified sequence. The reviewed PlayStation instructions do not establish that those actions safely resume or repair firmware. If possible, note whether the prompt was for the headset, the adapter, or both, then use the other official update route or contact PlayStation Support for device-specific help.

Update from a Windows PC
- Confirm the PC runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and has internet access.
- Install and open the PlayStation Link PC Driver.
- Connect the device being updated with a USB cable, as PlayStation’s instructions require a cable for device updates.
- Check for available firmware updates in the driver and follow its prompts. If both the USB adapter and headset have updates available, update the adapter first.
PlayStation does not specify a cable connector type in the cited driver instructions. Use a suitable USB data cable; a charging-only cable may not provide the data connection required. The official instructions do not state that you must buy a new cable.

A PS5 is not listed as a requirement for this PC route. The stated requirements are the compatible Windows version, internet access, the driver, and a USB cable for the device update.
Check the PC route before retrying
Confirm that you are using the official PlayStation Link PC Driver and that the computer meets the listed Windows requirement. Make sure the PC has internet access, and use a cable suitable for a device update. PlayStation’s instructions require a USB cable, but do not specify a connector type or say that a newly purchased cable is necessary. If you already have an appropriate cable, there is no reason in the cited instructions to buy another one simply because an update is being attempted.
If you have updates pending for both the headset and USB adapter, follow PlayStation’s order and update the adapter first. Then return to the driver to check the headset. This is a documented order for the two pending updates, not a general instruction to unplug and reconnect devices during an update. Follow the driver’s prompts and avoid improvising a sequence if the installation stops.
If the PC Driver quick menu is missing
The quick-menu troubleshooting applies when the driver menu itself does not appear; it is not a firmware recovery process. PlayStation’s recommended checks are to remove and reinsert the USB adapter, reboot the PC, and check the menu again. If the menu does appear but a firmware update is frozen, these quick-menu steps do not establish that the update can safely be resumed. Use the documented update route and contact support if the device still will not update.

Reset the headset if it is malfunctioning
A reset is a supported troubleshooting step for a PULSE Elite that is not working properly. It is not documented as a way to recover firmware installation frozen mid-update. Use it when the headset itself is malfunctioning, not as an assumed fix for a progress indicator that has stopped.

- Hold the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds.
- Press the PS Link button again to turn the headset back on.
PlayStation Support says, “Resetting won’t affect any PlayStation Link™ or Bluetooth pairings, or audio settings.” See PlayStation’s headset reset guidance.
This reset is less disruptive than wiping paired connections: PlayStation says it preserves PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. That distinction matters if your only symptom is a headset connection problem after an update attempt. Start with the ordinary reset if the headset itself is not behaving properly, but do not expect it to install firmware, reverse an incomplete update, or repair an update state that PlayStation has not documented a recovery method for.
Check connections and the PC Driver menu
For PS Link connection trouble
PlayStation’s connection guidance recommends making sure the relevant software is current, checking that nothing blocks the connection, trying a front USB port, and reducing nearby wireless-router interference. These are connection checks—not proof that interference causes a firmware update to freeze, or a guaranteed fix for a stalled installation.
Apply these suggestions to the connection symptoms they address. For example, if the adapter or headset is not available to the host, check that the connection path is not blocked and, where applicable, try a front USB port. If nearby wireless-router activity is an issue for PS Link connection, reduce that interference as PlayStation’s guidance recommends. Do not treat any of these as a substitute for the official update steps or as evidence of a firmware-installation cause.
The Norway support page describes software version 2.0 or newer as general PS Link connection guidance. That threshold is not an update-failure statistic. See PlayStation’s PS Link connection troubleshooting.
No published figure in the reviewed sources says how often PULSE Elite updates fail, and no failure rate or prevalence statistic should be inferred from the version 2.0-or-newer note. That note is a connection-guidance threshold, not a measure of update reliability.

If the PC Driver quick menu does not appear
- Remove the USB adapter and reinsert it.
- Restart the PC.
- Check whether the quick menu appears after the restart.
For a PS Link device that is not working properly, PlayStation also advises updating its firmware and trying a device reset. These steps address device or driver access problems; they do not constitute a published recovery sequence for an update frozen during installation. See the PC Driver troubleshooting instructions.
When to stop and contact PlayStation Support
If an update remains stuck after checking the supported route and connection, contact PlayStation Support for device-specific help. The official pages cited here do not document a special procedure for recovering an update frozen mid-installation. They also do not establish that repeatedly restarting, disconnecting the device during installation, performing a factory reset, or using a particular button sequence will safely resume or repair its firmware. Do not treat the connection wipe below as an update fix.
When you contact support, describe which route you used (PS5 or Windows PC), whether the update prompt appeared, and whether the headset, adapter, or both were being updated. If you tried the documented reset or connection checks, distinguish those actions from the update attempt itself. This keeps the issue focused on the update failure without implying that an undocumented recovery step has already been tried or is known to work.
There is no failure-rate statistic in the cited material, and the reviewed sources do not set out a time limit that defines “stuck.” If the official prompts do not complete, avoid guessing based on a particular duration or trying a procedure copied from unrelated hardware. PlayStation Support is the appropriate destination for device-specific instructions beyond the published steps in this guide.
Last resort for pairing problems: wipe paired connections
Only consider this if the problem is persistent pairing or connection trouble and the ordinary headset reset has not helped—not simply because an update is stuck. PlayStation describes holding the PS Link button until the status light quickly blinks blue, then repeating the hold; a successful wipe briefly blinks red. This removes PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings, so you will need to set those up again. Follow the current instructions on PlayStation’s support page before proceeding.
This wipe is substantially more disruptive than the 10-second reset. It removes the pairings and audio settings that the ordinary reset preserves. Consider it only when the actual issue is persistent connection or pairing trouble, after trying the ordinary reset, and only if you are prepared to set up those connections and settings again. It does not appear in PlayStation’s guidance as a method for repairing a stuck firmware installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my PULSE Elite update stuck?
The reviewed PlayStation guidance does not identify a specific cause or publish a failure rate for stuck PULSE Elite updates. It also does not document a special mid-installation recovery process. Use the supported PS5 or Windows PC update route, check the relevant connection guidance, and contact PlayStation Support if the update still will not complete.
How do I update a PULSE Elite headset on PS5?
Install available PS5 system software, then open Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update. Make the headset or adapter available to the console and follow an on-screen update prompt if one appears. If no prompt appears, the console is not offering an update at that time.
Can I update the PULSE Elite without a PS5?
Yes. PlayStation’s PS Link PC Driver supports PULSE Elite and USB adapter firmware updates on Windows 10 or Windows 11. The PC route requires internet access and a USB cable for updating devices. If both adapter and headset updates are available, update the adapter first.
Should I reset the headset while its update is frozen?
PlayStation documents a reset for a headset that is not working properly: hold the PS Link button for at least 10 seconds, then press it again to power the headset on. The documentation does not describe this as a recovery method for an update frozen mid-installation, so do not use it on that assumption.
Will resetting erase my PULSE Elite pairings or audio settings?
No. PlayStation Support says the ordinary reset does not affect PS Link or Bluetooth pairings or audio settings. A separate paired-connection wipe is more disruptive: it removes those pairings and settings and should be reserved for persistent pairing or connection problems.
What should I do if the PC Driver quick menu does not show?
PlayStation recommends removing and reinserting the USB adapter, restarting the PC, and checking again. Those steps address a missing quick menu; they are not a documented way to recover a firmware installation that has frozen.
Does wireless interference cause a PULSE Elite firmware update to freeze?
The cited PlayStation connection guidance recommends reducing nearby wireless-router interference as a PS Link connection check. It does not establish that interference causes a firmware update to freeze or that reducing it will fix a stalled installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo I need to buy a new USB cable for the Windows update?
PlayStation requires a USB cable for device updates but does not specify a connector type or say a new cable is required. Use a suitable USB data cable if you have one; the cited instructions do not require a purchase.
The Bottom Line
Use the PS5 device-software menu or the PlayStation Link PC Driver on Windows 10/11; on PC, have internet access and a USB cable, and update the adapter before the headset if both are pending. Use the 10-second reset for headset malfunction, not as a documented stuck-update recovery. If the update remains frozen, avoid unverified interruptions or button sequences and contact PlayStation Support.
