On Steam Deck or desktop Linux, you usually do not need to download Proton yourself: Steam supplies and manages its Proton compatibility tools. Enable Steam Play compatibility, then choose a tool for an individual game only if the default does not work as expected. Custom Proton builds are an advanced option for a specific need, not the normal installation route.
What Proton does—and what it is not
Valve describes Proton as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” It is based on Wine and includes additional components that help Windows games run through Steam on Linux. Most users should start with a Proton version supplied by the Steam client rather than downloading a separate installer. Valve’s Proton project documentation explains the tool and its intended use.

That integration matters: Proton is a compatibility tool selected and launched through Steam, not a general-purpose Windows application installer that you need to set up separately before Steam can use it. For the ordinary Steam gaming workflow, install or update Steam, allow it to obtain its compatibility tools, and select the appropriate tool through Steam’s compatibility controls. A third-party download or a source build is not the recommended first step.
Proton is also distinct from Steam Linux Runtime. Steam Play is the Steam interface’s umbrella for compatibility tools; Proton is the compatibility tool used to run Windows games, while Steam Linux Runtime is a container framework. The runtime and Proton can be related: Valve’s documentation says Steam Linux Runtime 4.0 is used for Proton 11 or newer. Installing or seeing a Steam Linux Runtime entry does not mean you have selected Proton, and the two terms are not interchangeable. If Steam lists a runtime download, do not assume it is a replacement Proton version; choose a Proton compatibility tool for a Windows game when that is what you intend to test. How do I install Proton on Steam Deck?
For ordinary play, install or update Steam and let the client install the compatibility tools it needs. Proton is distributed through Steam; a separate download from a third-party site is not the recommended starting point. Steam Deck uses the Steam client, so the same general approach applies: use Steam’s compatibility controls rather than manually copying Proton files.
The exact Gaming Mode menu wording can change between client revisions, and Valve’s available documentation does not establish a permanently current click-by-click Deck path. Look in the game’s Properties for its compatibility controls when you want to change one title’s behavior. If you are troubleshooting the Deck’s overall Steam installation rather than one game, first check for client and tool updates before attempting a custom build.
In practice, separate the question “Is Proton available to Steam?” from “Which tool should this particular game use?” Steam manages the first part. Only make a per-game selection when you have a reason—such as the current selection failing to launch or a deliberate compatibility test. This avoids unnecessary manual installation and keeps the change limited to the game you are investigating. Do not treat the absence of a specific option in one client revision as proof that Proton must be downloaded independently; interface labels and presentation can vary.
How do I enable Proton on Linux?
On desktop Linux, use Steam’s Settings and its Compatibility or Steam Play controls. The label may vary by client revision. Enable compatibility for the relevant Windows-game category, then allow Steam to install the selected compatibility tool if prompted. Steam provides several Proton versions and manages their installation and updates. The Proton project README recommends the Steam-supplied version for most users.
There are two different scopes to keep straight. The Steam compatibility setting makes the available Steam Play tools usable for Windows games, while a game’s Properties can override which tool that individual title uses. You do not need to install a custom build simply because you want to choose a different Steam-provided version for one game. First let Steam finish installing or updating the chosen tool, then launch the game and judge that selection on its own behavior.

If Steam itself will not run on a Linux system, distinguish that client problem from Proton setup. Valve’s Steam for Linux repository states that, starting 2025-08-15, the Steam client requires glibc 2.31 or newer. That is a Steam client prerequisite, not a Proton-specific installation requirement. Check your distribution’s current Steam support guidance if the system does not meet the client requirement. This detail is relevant when diagnosing a client that cannot start; it is not a reason to install a separate Proton package on a system where Steam is already running. How do I force a game to use Proton?
Use the per-game compatibility override when a title does not launch with its current default, or when you need to test a particular Proton version. In the Steam library, open the game’s Properties and find its compatibility controls; select the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose the desired Proton entry. Exact labels can differ across Steam client versions.

- Choose a Steam-provided Proton version. If the version is not installed, allow Steam to download it and finish updating before launching the game.
- Launch the game and assess the result. If the change makes no difference or introduces a problem, return to the same setting and select the previous tool or remove the override.
This override applies to that game; it does not mean every title must use the same tool. Steam’s documentation covers selecting compatibility tools and game-specific launch options. Proton documentation and Steamworks Proton guidance provide the relevant context.
Keep the test controlled: note the game’s current tool, change only that game’s setting, and try one alternative at a time. If you change a global setting, several game overrides, and launch options together, it becomes difficult to tell which change affected the result. A per-game override is the useful starting point precisely because it isolates the experiment. Once you have tested, you can keep the version that works for that title, revert to the previous choice, or remove the override rather than leaving an unexplained setting in place.
How do I change Proton versions for one game?
Change the compatibility tool in that game’s Properties rather than changing a global default just to test one title. This keeps the experiment isolated: another game can continue using its existing configuration. Start with a Steam-supplied version, and try a different supplied version only when the game’s behavior gives you a reason to do so. The practical choice is a trade-off, not a ranking that applies to every library. The default Steam-managed option is simplest and receives its tool management through Steam. Another Steam-supplied version is a relatively low-effort game-specific comparison because Steam installs and updates it, but you still need to test the title and revert if the change is worse. A custom or community local build involves more setup and maintenance; choose it only when you have a development, testing, or specific workaround need that justifies that extra work. No current official source establishes a universal best version or a verified third-party build recommendation for a named game.

Compatibility is title-specific. Valve’s Steamworks guidance says Proton has broad API coverage and that most games work out of the box, while also noting that compatibility work continues. That is not a guarantee for a particular title, graphics configuration, or anti-cheat system, and the cited page does not provide a current named-game pass/fail list. A working result for one game therefore does not prove that another title will work with the same tool, and a failure in one title does not by itself prove that Proton is unavailable or that the whole Steam setup is broken. Steamworks’ Proton documentation explains the scope without establishing a universal version recommendation.
How to install a custom local Proton build
Use this route only when you have a specific reason to install a build outside the versions Steam supplies. Valve documents the manual location as ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. Steam library layouts vary, so do not substitute an old example path as if it were universal. A local build is a separate choice from installing one of the Proton versions Steam already offers; it requires you to handle placement and discovery yourself.
- Obtain a redistributable Proton build appropriate for your development, testing, or compatibility need. No current official source establishes a universal third-party source or build recommendation, so use the packaging instructions associated with the build you specifically intend to use.
- Create a directory for the tool under
~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. Keep the tool’s files grouped in its own directory rather than mixing them with other local tools. - Place the build’s redistributable files in that tool directory, following the build’s own packaging instructions. If the directory structure or files do not match what that build expects, Steam may not discover it correctly.
- Restart the Steam client. Steam needs to rediscover local compatibility tools. Merely copying files while the client is already running does not complete the documented discovery sequence.
- Select the build in Steam Play or the game’s per-game compatibility controls. Use a game-specific choice when the purpose is to test one title, rather than changing settings broadly without a reason.
Valve also documents make install as an automated installation route for a Proton build you have built yourself. Building Proton from source is not the normal installation procedure: the project’s workflow is intended for advanced users, and Valve recommends Steam-provided Proton for most users. Do not follow a source-build workflow simply to get Proton installed for everyday play; it adds build and maintenance work that Steam-managed versions avoid. Where is my Proton log?
When a game fails to launch, a Proton log is a useful first diagnostic. In that game’s Steam launch options, add PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, then launch the game again. Proton writes a file matching steam-$APPID.log in your home directory by default; $APPID represents the game’s Steam application ID. To save logs elsewhere, set PROTON_LOG_DIR to the destination directory. Valve’s Proton documentation describes these logging options.

The sequence is important: add the launch option to the game you are troubleshooting, run that game again so Proton can produce the diagnostic output, and then look in the home directory for the corresponding app-ID log unless you configured another destination. The setting is a launch option, not a replacement for the game’s compatibility selection. It gathers detail that may help investigate a failure; it does not automatically repair the launch or identify a single definitive cause.
Before sharing a log in a project issue, inspect it for private information such as local file paths or account-related details. A log can help identify where launch is failing, but it does not itself establish that Proton, rather than a game update, driver, configuration, or other dependency, is the cause.

- Confirm the selected tool. Check whether the game has a per-game override and which compatibility tool it actually selects. Do not assume that a global setting tells you what a title with its own override is using.
- Let the tool finish installing or updating. A launch attempt made before Steam completes the download may not reflect the tool’s normal behavior.
- Test one change at a time. Switch the game to another Steam-provided Proton version and retest; avoid changing several settings at once, so you can tell which change mattered. If the alternate selection is no better, restore the prior tool or remove the override.
- Generate a Proton log. Use
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%and inspect the resulting log for a useful error or failure point. If you plan to ask for help, review the log for private paths and account-related details before sharing it. - Investigate driver or Vulkan clues specifically. Graphics requirements depend on GPU, distribution, and game. If the error points to Vulkan or a graphics driver, use current instructions from your Linux distribution and GPU vendor rather than applying old distribution-specific commands as universal fixes. No current official source establishes one current package command suitable for every GPU and distribution.
- Use the wined3d option only as a targeted test. For supported Direct3D paths,
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%asks Proton to use OpenGL-based wined3d instead of Vulkan-based DXVK. It is not a universal performance fix. Proton documents that runtime options do not permanently alter the Wine prefix; removing the option returns to the previous behavior.
Work through the likely cause rather than treating every failed launch as the same problem. First verify what tool the game is using and that its installation has completed. Then compare one Steam-provided version and gather a log if the failure continues. If the log or error indicates Vulkan or graphics-driver trouble, consult current, device- and distribution-specific guidance. A wined3d launch option is another narrow test only when the Direct3D path is relevant; it should not be left in place on the assumption that it improves all games.
Proton’s compatibility is not identical across games. Broad API coverage does not mean every Windows title, anti-cheat system, or configuration will work. If a game still fails after a controlled version test and log review, look for title-specific information from the game developer or the relevant compatibility project rather than assuming the Steam Deck or Linux Proton setup as a whole is broken. Valve’s Steamworks Proton guidance describes Proton’s broad but continuing compatibility work, and the Proton repository documents its logging and runtime options.
