Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your Windows screen is sideways, upside down, or refusing to switch between landscape and portrait, open Settings > System > Display, select the affected display, and choose the needed Display orientation. For automatic rotation, press Windows key + O to check the orientation lock, then disconnect or fold back the keyboard on a supported 2-in-1 so Windows can recognize tablet or tent form. External monitors also have to be physically turned after you change their software orientation.
The right fix depends on whether you are changing one display manually, trying to restore auto-rotate on a convertible, or correcting a driver-related change after Windows updated. Follow the sections below in order; each branch addresses a different cause without changing settings on displays that are working normally.

First identify which rotation problem you have
“Screen won’t rotate” can describe several different behaviors. A desktop monitor may never have supported automatic rotation, while a convertible may have auto-rotation disabled by a lock or by its current keyboard position. Start with the symptom that matches your computer.
| What you see | Most relevant check | What should happen |
|---|---|---|
| The picture is sideways or upside down | Display orientation in Settings | You can select Landscape, Portrait, or the corresponding flipped orientation for the chosen display. |
| A 2-in-1 does not turn when you rotate the device | Windows key + O and the keyboard/form-factor state | Orientation lock is off, and Windows detects tablet or tent form. |
| Rotation lock is greyed out | Whether the keyboard is connected and the device is recognized as a convertible | The control becomes relevant only when Windows detects a supported tablet-style configuration. |
| An external screen changed orientation in software | Display selection and physical monitor position | The image and the monitor’s physical position match. |
| The option disappeared after an update | Restart, then Windows Update and graphics-driver updates | Display controls and sensor behavior return if the change was software-related. |
Automatic rotation is not a universal desktop-monitor feature. It is associated with supported tablet and convertible configurations, whereas manual orientation is available per display in Windows Display settings.

Set the screen orientation manually
Manual orientation is the fastest way to correct a sideways or upside-down image, and it works independently of automatic rotation sensors.
- Open Display settings. Select Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Choose the display. If more than one screen appears in the display arrangement, click the numbered display that is rotated incorrectly. Selecting the wrong screen changes a different monitor.
- Find Display orientation. In the display settings for the selected screen, open the orientation menu.
- Select the required orientation. Choose Landscape for the normal horizontal layout. Choose Portrait when the screen is intended to be vertical. If Windows offers a flipped variant, use it only when the display is physically mounted in the opposite direction.
- Confirm the change. Windows normally shows a confirmation prompt. Accept it if the image now has the correct direction; otherwise let the prompt revert and try the other orientation.
Orientation is set per display. Changing the setting for an external monitor does not automatically change the built-in panel of a laptop, and changing the laptop panel does not rotate every connected screen. Repeat the selection process for each display that needs a different layout.
If the image is hard to use while it is sideways
A sideways image does not prevent you from opening Display settings; it only changes how the pointer and text appear. Use the keyboard to open Windows key + I, then navigate to System and Display. If several monitors are connected, use the display diagram and select the number that corresponds to the affected panel before changing orientation.

Choose Landscape or Portrait deliberately
Landscape is the usual setting for a laptop or desktop monitor. Portrait is useful for a physically vertical display, but the software setting alone does not turn the hardware. On an external monitor, complete the software change first and then rotate the monitor itself.

Check the orientation lock shortcut
On supported devices, an orientation lock can make auto-rotation appear broken even when the display and sensors are functioning. Press Windows key + O. Microsoft documents this shortcut as “Windows key + O | Lock the device orientation.” Pressing it checks or toggles the device-orientation lock state.
- Place the convertible in the form in which you want it to operate.
- Press Windows key + O once.
- Rotate or reposition the device and wait briefly for Windows to respond.
- If rotation still does not occur, press the shortcut again to ensure the lock is not enabled, then continue with the form-factor checks below.
The shortcut concerns the device’s orientation lock; it does not replace the per-display Display orientation menu. Use Display settings when you want a fixed landscape or portrait layout, and use the lock shortcut when you want to control whether a supported convertible can rotate automatically.
Put a supported 2-in-1 into a detectable tablet or tent form
Windows needs to recognize that a convertible is being used as a tablet rather than as a conventional laptop. Disconnect the keyboard or fold it back, then place the device in tablet or tent form. After the physical change, give Windows a moment to update the device state and test rotation again.
Windows 11 determines tablet mode from the device form factor and keyboard connection. It does not provide a general manual tablet-mode switch that forces every laptop into tablet mode. Therefore, a keyboard-connected convertible can remain in laptop mode even when you physically turn the screen.

- Save your work and disconnect the keyboard if the design has a detachable keyboard.
- For a hinged convertible, fold the keyboard behind the display or move the hinge into the manufacturer-supported tent or tablet position.
- Keep the device stable while Windows detects the change. Avoid testing while the hinge is between positions.
- Press Windows key + O to verify the orientation lock, then rotate the device.
- Return to Settings > System > Display if you need to set a permanent manual orientation after the device changes form.
If Rotation lock becomes available only after the keyboard is detached or folded back, that is expected: the control is tied to Windows’ recognition of a supported convertible state, not simply to the presence of a touchscreen.
Understand why Rotation lock can be greyed out
A greyed-out Rotation lock does not by itself prove that the display is damaged. Common explanations are related to how Windows currently identifies the computer.
- The keyboard is still connected. Windows may be treating the convertible as a laptop, so tablet-style rotation controls are unavailable.
- The device is not in a supported tablet or tent configuration. Automatic rotation applies to supported convertible form factors, not ordinary desktop monitors.
- You are looking at the wrong display. With multiple screens, select the built-in convertible display in the display arrangement before judging whether the control applies.
- The orientation is being managed manually. A fixed setting in Display orientation is separate from automatic sensor-driven changes.
Disconnect or fold back the keyboard, let Windows detect the new form, and then check the lock again. If the control remains unavailable on a device that previously rotated automatically, continue with a restart and graphics-driver check.
Rotate an external monitor correctly
Changing the software orientation does not rotate the monitor housing. After selecting Portrait or another orientation for an external display, turn the monitor physically so its top edge and the Windows image point in the same direction. Microsoft’s display guidance states: “If you change the orientation of a monitor, you’ll also need to physically rotate the screen.”

Use a stand or mount that allows rotation
A monitor that is designed to pivot, or one attached to a swivel stand or VESA mount, can be turned after the software change. Do not force a fixed-base display or twist cables sharply. If the monitor cannot be repositioned, keep it in Landscape and use the orientation setting only for a temporary test.
Check the correct monitor in a multi-display setup
In Settings > System > Display, select the external monitor’s numbered rectangle before changing orientation. The software image should match the specific panel you physically turned. If only one monitor is sideways, change only that display instead of applying the same setting to the entire arrangement.

If rotation controls were present before an update, or if the behavior changed unexpectedly, restart the computer before making deeper changes. A restart reloads Windows’ display and device state and can restore a control that failed to appear after a session change.

Use this troubleshooting sequence when the basic fix fails
Case 1: The display is permanently sideways
- Select the affected display in Settings > System > Display.
- Set Display orientation to Landscape.
- Confirm the change.
- If it is an external monitor, physically turn the monitor to match the image.
If the setting changes successfully, the issue was a manual orientation choice rather than automatic rotation.
Case 2: A convertible will not auto-rotate
- Press Windows key + O and make sure orientation is not locked.
- Disconnect or fold back the keyboard.
- Place the device in a supported tablet or tent form.
- Wait for Windows to recognize the form, then rotate the device.
- Restart and check Windows Update if the behavior changed after an update.
Case 3: Rotation lock is unavailable
- Confirm that you are using a supported convertible rather than a conventional laptop or desktop monitor.
- Detach or fold back the keyboard so Windows can detect tablet-style use.
- Select the built-in display rather than an external monitor.
- Restart, then check for graphics-driver updates through Windows Update.
Case 4: Only one of several displays is wrong
- Open the display arrangement.
- Identify the numbered rectangle for the sideways screen.
- Change orientation only for that display.
- Physically rotate the external panel if applicable.
Manual rotation versus automatic rotation
These methods solve different problems. Choosing between them prevents a fixed orientation setting from being mistaken for a sensor failure.
| Method | Where it applies | What controls it | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual orientation | Each selected display | Settings > System > Display > Display orientation | Correcting a sideways image or setting a deliberate portrait layout. |
| Automatic rotation | Supported tablet and convertible configurations | Device form factor, keyboard connection, and orientation lock | Allowing a 2-in-1 to follow its physical position. |
| External-monitor repositioning | Physically pivot-capable monitors | The monitor stand or mount, after the software change | Matching the screen’s housing to a Portrait or other rotated image. |
| Graphics-driver update | Windows display behavior affected by software changes | Windows Update | Recovering controls or behavior that changed after an update. |
What not to expect from a desktop computer
A desktop monitor normally stays in the orientation selected in Display settings. It does not automatically rotate merely because someone turns the monitor by hand. Automatic rotation is tied to supported tablet and convertible designs, while a desktop setup requires a deliberate software orientation change and, for a physical portrait setup, a monitor that can safely pivot.

Windows must recognize the device as a supported convertible and detect the keyboard or hinge state that indicates tablet or tent use.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Select the correct numbered display before changing anything.
- Use Display orientation for a fixed Landscape or Portrait result.
- Press Windows key + O when automatic rotation seems locked.
- Detach or fold back the keyboard on a supported 2-in-1.
- Remember that Windows 11 derives tablet mode from form factor and keyboard connection rather than a universal manual switch.
- Physically rotate an external monitor after changing its software orientation.
- Restart and check Windows Update for graphics-driver updates when controls disappear or behavior changes after an update.
