How to Fix Remote Desktop Error 0x204 on Windows 10

Error 0x204 is a Remote Desktop connection symptom, not a single fault. This step-by-step Windows 10 guide isolates host availability, name resolution, TCP 3389, firewalls, policy and authentication without unsafe blanket changes.

Remote Desktop error 0x204 means the Windows 10 Remote Desktop client could not complete a connection. It is a symptom, not a single diagnosis: the host may be off or asleep, the name may resolve to the wrong address, TCP port 3389 may be blocked, Remote Desktop may be disabled by a setting or Group Policy, or authentication may fail. Work through those layers in order rather than disabling every firewall. Start with the target PC, then test its address and port, check host and intermediary firewalls, confirm Remote Desktop policy, and finally troubleshoot credentials and Network Level Authentication (NLA).

What error 0x204 actually tells you

The built-in mstsc.exe client reports 0x204 when it cannot establish a usable Remote Desktop session. The code does not identify whether the failure occurred during name lookup, the TCP connection, credential negotiation or session creation. Microsoft lists several possible causes:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The remote computer is powered off, asleep or hibernating.
  • The computer name is wrong or cannot be resolved on the current network.
  • The network path is failing.
  • A firewall blocks the Remote Desktop listener, normally TCP port 3389.
  • Remote Desktop is not enabled on the host, or an organization policy overrides the visible switch.
  • The host requires Network Level Authentication and the client or account does not satisfy it.
  • The account is not authorized for Remote Desktop.

Because the same code covers all of these conditions, a controlled sequence is more reliable than repeatedly changing security settings.

Prepare a safe, useful test

  • Use the Windows 10 PC you want to connect to as the host and another device as the client.
  • Make one change at a time and retry with mstsc.exe. Note whether the failure is name lookup, TCP connection, sign-in or session creation.
  • Keep NLA and firewalls enabled whenever possible. Do not turn off a firewall for an unrestricted period; temporarily narrowing a rule for diagnosis is safer than blanket disabling.
  • If the PCs are managed by an employer or school, Group Policy, VPN controls, cloud security groups and third-party security software may override local settings. An administrator may need to change those controls.

Fix 0x204 step by step

1. Confirm that the host is on, awake and the intended computer

At the target PC, confirm that it is powered on and not sleeping or hibernating. A sleeping desktop cannot accept a new session unless its power and hardware configuration support waking for the request. If someone is present at the host, have them unlock it and verify the Windows computer name in Settings > System > About or with the name shown by the system administrator.

In Remote Desktop Connection on the client, enter that exact name. Avoid relying on an old shortcut: a renamed PC, a changed DHCP address or a stale DNS record can point the client somewhere else.

2. Separate a name-resolution problem from a general network failure

Retry using the host’s current IP address instead of its name. Microsoft specifically recommends this comparison because it distinguishes DNS or local name-resolution trouble from a broader connection problem.

  • Name fails, IP works: the host is reachable, but name resolution or the saved computer name is wrong. Correct the name, DNS registration or local hosts/DNS configuration rather than changing RDP security.
  • Name and IP both fail: continue with the network and port checks; the problem is probably not limited to DNS.
  • The IP changes repeatedly: obtain the current address from the host or reserve an address in the network’s normal administration system. Do not assume an old address remains valid.

When testing an IP, enter only the address in the Computer field (for example, an address supplied by your network administrator). Do not add a random port suffix; the standard client will use the configured RDP port.

3. Test TCP port 3389 from the client

Open PowerShell on the client and run this command, replacing <host> with the computer name or IP you are testing:

Read the TcpTestSucceeded result:

  • True: a TCP path to port 3389 exists. Focus next on Remote Desktop enablement, policy, credentials and NLA.
  • False: the client cannot complete the TCP connection. Check the host listener, Windows Firewall, the local network, VPN routing and every intervening firewall before investigating passwords.

A successful ping is not enough evidence: ICMP can be allowed while TCP 3389 is blocked, and some networks block ping entirely. The port test targets the service that Remote Desktop actually needs.

4. Check the host’s Windows Firewall rules

On the host, open Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security and locate the inbound rules in the Remote Desktop display group. Enable the rules that apply to the host’s active network profile. A profile mismatch can leave a rule enabled for one profile while the current connection uses another.

Run it in an elevated PowerShell window on the host. If your organization manages firewall policy, a local change may be reverted; ask the administrator to permit the Remote Desktop rules for the required profile.

Also inspect firewalls outside Windows:

  • A home or office router may block traffic between network segments.
  • A VPN can route the client away from the host or apply its own access policy.
  • A cloud-hosted Windows PC may have a security group or network ACL that denies TCP 3389.
  • Third-party endpoint security may filter the listener even when Windows rules look correct.

Do not permanently disable all firewall protection as a “fix.” If a controlled diagnostic requires a temporary rule change, restore the original protection immediately after the test.

5. Confirm that Remote Desktop is enabled on the host

On Windows 10, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and confirm that Enable Remote Desktop is on. Apply the setting and retry from the client.

If the switch cannot be enabled, turns itself off, or appears enabled while port 3389 remains unreachable, inspect the policy that controls incoming connections. In the Local Group Policy Editor, the relevant path is:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Connections > Allow users to connect remotely by using Remote Desktop Services

A policy can override the Settings interface. On a managed PC, the effective domain policy may differ from the local policy, so a local edit may not persist. Have the policy administrator confirm that Remote Desktop connections are allowed and that the policy is applied to this computer.

6. Check authorization and Network Level Authentication

If Test-NetConnection succeeds but the client fails while signing in, move to authentication rather than changing network rules. Microsoft notes that a remote PC might allow connections only from clients with NLA configured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the account you are using is permitted to sign in through Remote Desktop. Add the account to the host’s Remote Desktop Users group when that is the approved authorization method.
  • Check user-rights policy if the account is in that group but still receives an authorization or logon error. A policy denying “log on through Remote Desktop Services” can override group membership.
  • Verify the account format and password. For a local account, use the host’s expected local-account format; for a domain account, use the organization’s domain format. Do not save credentials in a shared shortcut while diagnosing.
  • Keep NLA enabled unless an administrator has a documented compatibility reason to change it. Disabling NLA reduces the protection provided before a session is created and does not repair a blocked port or an offline host.

If the port is reachable and credentials are accepted but the session still fails, review the host’s Remote Desktop, security and policy logs with the administrator. The failure may occur during session creation rather than transport.

7. Retest through the simplest client path

After each controlled change, launch the built-in client by pressing Win+R, entering mstsc.exe, and selecting Show Options only when you need to verify the user name or display settings. Enter the direct hostname or IP, connect, and record the stage that changed.

Remove unnecessary variables during this test: disconnect an unneeded VPN, avoid a saved RDP file with old credentials, and test from the same network as the host when possible. Once a direct connection works, add the VPN, gateway, saved profile or external route back one at a time.

Same-network versus external access

When both PCs are on the same network

Start with the host’s local IP and the TCP test. A false result usually points to the host firewall, a disabled listener, a network-profile mismatch or segmentation between the devices. If the IP works but the name does not, fix name resolution first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When connecting across the internet or a VPN

There may be several policy layers between client and host. A VPN can change routes and DNS; a router can block or redirect the port; and a cloud security group can deny the packet before it reaches Windows. Test from the approved network path and involve the network administrator rather than exposing a Windows host directly or opening broad inbound access. The port test should be repeated from the actual client path, because a successful test inside the LAN does not prove that an external route is permitted.

Common dead ends and safer alternatives

  • Repeatedly toggling Remote Desktop: first determine whether the TCP port is reachable. A toggle cannot correct a router or VPN rule.
  • Disabling every firewall: identify the specific blocked layer and enable only the Remote Desktop rule for the applicable profile.
  • Changing NLA before testing the port: NLA matters during authentication; it cannot make an unreachable host answer.
  • Assuming a password error when 0x204 appears immediately: an immediate failure commonly occurs before credential negotiation, so check the host, name and port first.
  • Using an old IP from a screenshot or shortcut: verify the current address at the host and compare name and IP tests.

Optional network hardware isolation

If Wi-Fi reliability is in doubt, connect the client or host temporarily with a known-good Cat6 Ethernet cable or a USB Ethernet adapter. This is a diagnostic way to isolate wireless interference or a local link problem, not a universal 0x204 repair. If the wired test changes TcpTestSucceeded from false to true, investigate the Wi-Fi signal, access point, VLAN or wireless policy before changing Remote Desktop authentication.

When to escalate

Escalate to the person managing the PC or network when Group Policy controls the setting, a VPN or cloud security group filters the route, the host’s logs show authorization denials, or the account requires rights you do not administer. Give them the exact hostname and IP tested, the Test-NetConnection result, whether the Remote Desktop switch stayed enabled, and the point at which mstsc.exe failed. Those details let an administrator work on the failing layer without weakening unrelated security controls.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review crash information and apply selected system and security checks. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every Remote Desktop failure. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 with a free trial by category (at least two days), followed by a subscription.
