How to Fix a Server Communication Error on Nintendo Switch

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The message “A server communication error has occurred. Please try again later” does not identify one specific fault: Nintendo services may be down, your Wi-Fi or router may be having trouble, or the problem may be limited to a game’s servers. Start by checking Nintendo’s network status and recording the full error code; then use the Switch connection test to choose the right fix. These steps cover Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Switch 2 menu labels may differ.

Check whether Nintendo’s servers are down

Before changing network settings, check Nintendo’s network-status page for maintenance or outages affecting the eShop, Nintendo Account services, online play, or downloads. Nintendo also recommends checking service notices when troubleshooting error codes (error-code information and support).

If the affected service has an active incident, wait for Nintendo to report that it has ended, then try again. Repeatedly restarting your router or changing settings will not repair a Nintendo-side outage.

Record the exact error code

Copy the complete code, including all digits and hyphens, and look it up in Nintendo’s error-code support pages. The wording “server communication error” is not enough to identify the cause; codes can point to different services and troubleshooting paths.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Run the Switch connection test

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Internet, then Test Connection.
  3. Review the connection result, NAT type, and download and upload speeds.

Nintendo’s connection-test documentation explains the results, including NAT types (connection-test results). A successful test means the console connected at that moment; it does not guarantee that a particular game server, matchmaking session, or eShop transaction will work. Speed alone also does not reveal every problem: latency, packet loss, congestion, DNS, and NAT compatibility can matter.

If the connection test fails, restart and check Wi-Fi

Power-cycle the modem and router

  1. Turn off or unplug the modem and router.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds. If the modem has a backup battery, unplugging it may not fully power it off; follow the equipment maker’s instructions for a complete restart.
  3. Power on the modem first and wait for its status lights to stabilize.
  4. Power on the router, wait for Wi-Fi to return, then restart the Switch or run the connection test again.

Nintendo recommends restarting network equipment in its guidance for error 2306-0811 and error 2618-0203.

Reduce distance and interference

  • For diagnosis, place the Switch roughly 10 feet from the router; Nintendo also gives 10–15 feet as a troubleshooting range. This is an approximate test distance, not a required permanent setup (Nintendo’s 2137-8065 guidance).
  • Temporarily remove the console from the dock if its placement appears to affect reception. Move obstacles away and avoid placing the console near microwave ovens, cordless phones, or other congested wireless equipment.
  • Pause large downloads or streaming on the same network while testing. A speed test alone cannot rule out intermittent interference or congestion.

Reconnect or try another access point

  1. Open System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings.
  2. Select your Wi-Fi network (SSID) and enter its password if prompted, then complete the connection test.
  3. If available, try the router’s other band, commonly 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, or test another access point such as a phone hotspot.

Nintendo’s wireless setup guidance covers network selection and placement (wireless internet setup). If a hotspot works when the home network does not, that suggests—but does not prove—a home Wi-Fi, router, DNS, NAT, or ISP issue. A hotel, school, workplace, or public network may require a captive-portal sign-in that the Switch cannot complete normally.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

If the connection works but multiplayer fails, check NAT

NAT matters most when the connection test succeeds but you cannot join friends, matchmaking fails, or peer-to-peer features do not work. Nintendo describes NAT A as most favorable for peer-to-peer communication and NAT F as unable to complete it; intermediate results may restrict some activities. The exact effect depends on the game and can also depend on the other player’s network (NAT and connection-test results; Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting).

If the problem happens only with one friend, ask them to check their connection and NAT too. Double NAT (for example, a router behind an ISP gateway) or carrier-grade NAT from an ISP can limit what you can change. Do not assume port forwarding is necessary or guaranteed to work: router interfaces and ISP setups differ. Ask the router manufacturer or ISP about the network configuration before making advanced changes.

Try alternate DNS only when the symptoms point to DNS

For a DNS-related error, Nintendo documents Google Public DNS as an option. It may help if the DNS service currently configured for your network is failing, but it will not fix a server outage, weak Wi-Fi, or restrictive NAT. Google’s DNS addresses are subject to Google’s terms of service.

  • Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
  • This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
  • The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
  • Model number HAC 001( 01)
  1. Open System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings.
  2. Select the saved network, then Change Settings.
  3. Select DNS Settings → Manual.
  4. Set Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8 and Secondary DNS to 8.8.4.4, save, and run Test Connection.

Nintendo gives these addresses in its guidance for error 2219-1006 and error 2618-0203. If the change does not help, return to the same DNS menu and select Automatic. On a managed network, use the DNS settings specified by its administrator. Changing DNS does not, by itself, increase internet speed.

Use a wired connection as a Wi-Fi diagnostic

If you can connect the Switch to the router by cable, a wired test can show whether Wi-Fi is the weak link. It cannot resolve Nintendo service outages, account problems, or a game publisher’s server issue. Nintendo’s setup requirements vary by model: the Switch OLED dock model HEG-007 has a built-in LAN port, the original dock generally needs a USB LAN adapter, and Switch Lite needs additional compatible hardware for wired networking (Nintendo’s wired setup guidance).

Check for a game-specific or account requirement

If the eShop and other online games work but one game does not, check that game’s service status, update information, and support page. Nintendo directs questions about non-Nintendo software to its manufacturer (Nintendo support and third-party software guidance).

  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer

Some online multiplayer features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, depending on the game and feature. A subscription limitation is different from a communication error, so do not treat buying a membership as a general network fix (Nintendo Switch internet and online-service information).

Update the console and router; avoid premature resets

Install any pending Switch system update and check the router maker’s instructions for available firmware updates. Update information changes over time, so consult Nintendo’s system-update page rather than relying on an old version number. Re-test after each meaningful change.

Nintendo also lists turning off IPv6 as a targeted NAT troubleshooting step: System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings → select the saved network → Change Settings → turn IPv6 Connection off. Test again, and restore the previous setting if it makes no difference (Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting).

Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

A factory reset of the router can erase ISP credentials, Wi-Fi settings, parental controls, or custom network rules; reserve it for a situation where the router maker or ISP advises it and you have the required setup details. Resetting the Switch is not an appropriate early fix for an ordinary communication error.

When to contact support

Contact Nintendo if Nintendo services or multiple games remain inaccessible after the network test and basic checks. Contact your ISP or router manufacturer if the console fails on your home network but works elsewhere, or if NAT or router configuration appears to be the issue. For a single non-Nintendo game, contact its publisher.

Have these details ready: the full error code, Switch model, ISP, router manufacturer and model, router firmware version if known, NAT type, whether another network works, and whether the issue affects one game or several Nintendo services. Nintendo’s technical-support guidance asks users to prepare ISP and wireless-access-point details (information for Nintendo technical support).
