If a Steam game returns to the Play button, flashes a process and closes, or stays at “Preparing to launch,” start with the low-risk checks: note the exact symptom, restart Steam and your computer, then verify the game’s installed files. After that, choose a step that fits what is failing—download or library state, the Steam client itself, or a game-specific display issue. These checks can narrow the cause, but no single one is a universal fix for every game.
First, identify what happens when you click Play
Before changing settings, try to capture the failure as it occurs. The details distinguish a game that never starts from one that starts and immediately crashes, and they make a support request more useful. A brief change in the Play button, a process that disappears, a game window that closes, and a Steam client crash are different observations. They do not identify the cause by themselves, but they help you choose which check to try next.

- Does the button briefly change and then return to Play?
- Does a game process appear briefly and disappear, or does the game window open before closing?
- Does Steam remain open, or does the Steam client also close or crash?
- Does Steam stay on “Preparing to launch,” show an error, or open a crash dialog?
- Did the problem begin after a game update, driver update, mod change, or other change?
Take a screenshot of any error message before dismissing it. Steam’s client troubleshooting flow asks users to provide a screenshot and a description of the issue when contacting support. If there is no message, note that too. Record what you see rather than guessing at the explanation: for example, write “the Play button returned after a few seconds” instead of “the installation is corrupted.”

If you see “Preparing to launch,” note how the message ends—does it remain there, disappear, or lead to a game window or error? The message alone is not enough to establish what has failed.

Try the low-risk checks first
Restart Steam and the computer
Exit Steam, open it again, and retry the game. If that does not help, restart the computer and try once more. Steam recommends restarting as an initial step for installation and update problems. A restart is a sensible first check for a launch failure too, but it does not identify or fix every possible cause.
Keep this check simple: restart Steam, test the same game, and note the result. If the problem remains, restart the computer and test again. That order helps you tell whether either restart changed the behavior. A restart that does not help is still useful information; it is a reason to move to a targeted check rather than repeating the same step or changing several unrelated settings at once.
Verify the game’s installed files
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game that will not start and select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of Game Files and wait for the check to finish.
- Try launching the game again.
Steam says verification checks installed game files and can fix them if necessary. Steam’s wording is: “Steam can verify the correctness over installed game files and fix them if necessary.” It is a useful next step when the game installation may be incomplete or damaged; it does not establish that the problem is in the files if the game still fails afterward.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLet the check finish before trying to launch the game again. The point is to have Steam check the installed files and repair them if necessary, not to assume in advance that a file is damaged. If verification completes and the same failure returns, keep that result in your notes and continue to the check that best matches the symptom. Repeating verification without a changed result is not a substitute for investigating a client, library, display, or game-specific issue.
Choose the next step by the symptom
After restarting and verifying files, use the observed behavior to pick a next step. These options address different areas: locally cached Steam configuration data, library-folder permissions, possible software conflicts with the Steam client, display settings for Valve/Source games, and a “Preparing to launch” issue on a particular platform. They are not interchangeable, and none is a universal remedy for every game that closes at startup.
| What you see | What to try | Why this is targeted |
|---|---|---|
| The problem appears tied to a download, update, or cached Steam state. | Settings > Downloads > Clear Cache | Steam says this flushes locally cached configuration data and reacquires it from Steam’s servers. |
| Steam reports a library write or permission problem. | Settings > Storage > open the library’s menu > Repair Folder | Steam says library repair refreshes the library folder’s permissions. |
| The Steam client itself closes or crashes, not just the game. | Check Steam’s guidance on programs that may interfere with the client. | Steam identifies other programs as a possible source of client conflicts. |
| A Valve or Source game has a video or display-related launch problem. | Use Steam’s video/display troubleshooting guidance for that game. | Steam’s listed display launch options are scoped to Valve/Source games. |
| The game remains at “Preparing to launch” on Windows. | Consult Steam’s support guidance for this symptom and its current Windows update instructions. | Steam’s page directs Windows users toward Microsoft update instructions. |
| The game remains at “Preparing to launch” with Steam Play. | Consult Steam’s support guidance and the Proton issue resource it points to. | The relevant compatibility path differs from the Windows path. |
Use the table as a way to narrow the next check, not as a list of things that must all be done. For example, a library repair is more relevant when Steam reports a write or permission problem than when a game simply opens and crashes. A display option is relevant only to the game types Steam documents. Matching the step to the symptom reduces unnecessary changes and makes the result easier to interpret.
Clear the download cache only when it fits
In Steam, open Settings > Downloads > Clear Cache. Steam explains that clearing the download cache flushes locally cached configuration data and reacquires it from Steam’s servers. Use it when the symptom suggests a download, update, or cached-client state; it is not presented as a general repair for every game crash. Follow any Steam prompt that appears after clearing the cache, then retry the affected game.
This check is aimed at locally cached configuration data, not at diagnosing every possible game startup failure. If the game failed without any indication of a download, update, or cached state, clearing the cache may not address the issue. If the problem began during an update or Steam appears stuck around a download-related state, it is a more natural fit. Afterward, observe whether the specific behavior changed; do not treat the act of clearing the cache as proof that the cause was cache data.

Repair the library folder when Steam reports a library problem
Open Settings > Storage, find the library containing the game, open that library’s menu, and choose Repair Folder. Steam describes this action as refreshing library folder permissions. It is appropriate when Steam reports a write or permission problem in that library, rather than as a routine step for any game that closes at startup.
Make sure you choose the library that contains the affected game. The purpose is to refresh that folder’s permissions, so a repair to a different library would not be the targeted check for the reported problem. If Steam has not reported a library or permission issue and the game simply closes, first use the general file check and then follow the branch that fits the evidence. If a library repair does not change the error, preserve the error text for support rather than repeatedly repairing the folder.
If Steam itself crashes, investigate client conflicts
Determine whether only the game closes or Steam closes too. If the Steam client is failing, use Steam’s General Steam Client Troubleshooting and Programs Which May Interfere guidance. Steam identifies software conflicts as a possibility, but that does not prove a particular background program is responsible for your crash.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a careful test, note which programs were running and change one thing at a time, following Steam’s instructions rather than removing software or changing several settings at once. If the client remains stable while the game alone fails, focus next on the game’s files and its own support guidance.
The distinction matters because a game-only crash and a client crash point to different troubleshooting paths. If Steam stays open and the game process disappears, that observation does not confirm a client conflict. If Steam closes or becomes unstable as well, Steam’s client-troubleshooting material is more relevant. Avoid deciding that a particular application is the cause simply because it was open; use the support guidance and make a controlled test so you can tell whether a change affected the symptom.
If you seek Steam Support, provide the screenshot and a concise description of what happened. Include whether Steam itself closed, what the Play button did, and which game was involved. Steam’s support flow calls for those details because a report that separates client behavior from a single game’s behavior is more useful than a general statement that “Steam crashes.”
Keep launch options and display fixes game-specific
Steam has launch-option guidance for video and display settings, but the listed options are for Valve/Source games and Steam says they have no effect on other Steam games. Do not copy a Valve-specific flag into another title on the assumption it is a general startup fix.
If the failing title is a Valve/Source game and the symptom points to video or display settings, follow Steam’s game-specific guidance. That guidance also points to updating graphics drivers and DirectX. The available information does not establish a particular driver version or a universal driver fix, so use instructions appropriate to your operating system and hardware rather than guessing at a version.

Before trying this branch, check that both conditions fit: the title is a Valve/Source game, and the problem relates to video or display settings. A generic crash at startup is not enough by itself to show that a display option is the right fix. If the title is not in that scope, those listed options have no effect on it according to Steam. Do not add random launch flags as an experiment; use the documented guidance for the affected title and keep track of any change you make.
Graphics-driver and DirectX guidance should also be followed in context. The support information does not name a specific driver version or claim that updating will fix every launch crash. Hardware and operating-system details matter, so use current instructions appropriate to the machine rather than installing a guessed version or assuming every crash is caused by graphics software.
What to do when “Preparing to launch” does not finish
Steam’s support page for this specific symptom separates its guidance by platform: Windows users are directed to current Microsoft update instructions, while Steam Play users are pointed to Valve’s Proton issue resource. Use the path for the environment in which you run the game; Windows update instructions are not a substitute for investigating a Steam Play compatibility issue.
The exact steps can depend on the current operating system and the game. Check the current instructions on Steam’s support page and follow the relevant linked guidance there. If the game still does not launch, record whether Steam stays open, whether a game process appears, and any error shown. A “Preparing to launch” message by itself does not establish that the game files, Windows, or compatibility layer is the cause.
If you are on Windows, follow the current Windows update instructions linked from Steam’s symptom guidance rather than relying on an old or unrelated example. If you use Steam Play, use the Proton resource Steam points to and look for guidance relevant to the game and issue. These are separate paths because the platform and compatibility environment differ. If neither applies to your setup, or the steps do not resolve the issue, include the platform and the exact behavior in a support request.
Do not treat a long-running “Preparing to launch” message as a diagnosis by itself. Note whether it stays on that message, whether the button changes back, whether a process appears, and whether an error follows. Those observations help explain what “does not finish” means in your case and allow Steam or the game’s support team to direct you to more relevant guidance.
Escalate with details that can identify the cause
If the general checks fail, contact the game’s official support channel for title-specific errors. Contact Steam Support when the Steam client or a Steam-managed installation appears to be the failing part. Include the information below rather than reporting only that the game “doesn’t work.”

Make the report chronological and factual. For example: state that the game began failing after a particular update or mod change if that is what you observed, then say what happens when you click Play, whether Steam stays open, and whether a message appears. List the restart, verification, cache, or library checks you actually tried and describe the result of each. This avoids asking support to repeat steps that have already been completed and prevents a guess from being mistaken for an observed cause.
Include the GPU and driver information because Steam’s display guidance points to graphics drivers for relevant Valve/Source display issues, while the operating system and version help direct platform-specific guidance. Do not omit an exact error just because the wording seems generic; a screenshot preserves it accurately. If there is no error dialog or screenshot to provide, explain that and describe the behavior instead.
Be cautious about reinstalling Steam
Do not uninstall Steam as an early troubleshooting shortcut. Steam’s installation and update guidance warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content. Try the targeted checks above first, and consult Steam’s current instructions before taking any action that removes the client or installed files.

This is an important risk difference between the steps in this guide. Restarting Steam, restarting the computer, verifying game files, clearing cached configuration data, and repairing a library folder are targeted checks described by Steam. Uninstalling Steam can delete game content, so it is not equivalent to those checks and should not be used casually as a first response to a game that will not launch. If a support instruction ever calls for a removal or reinstall, read its current directions carefully so you understand what content may be affected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the checks can—and cannot—tell you
- Verification checks installed game files and can repair them when necessary; it cannot guarantee the game will launch.
- Cache clearing addresses locally cached configuration data, while library repair refreshes library permissions. Neither is a universal crash remedy.
- Client-conflict guidance is relevant when Steam itself is unstable; it does not prove that background software caused a game-only crash.
- Display launch options are limited to Valve/Source games and should not be treated as generic Steam launch flags.
- Game-specific diagnosis needs the title, OS and version, hardware, error, recent changes, and observed launch behavior. Without those details, a single cause or guaranteed fix cannot be established.
Think of troubleshooting as narrowing the area of failure rather than running a collection of supposed universal cures. A file verification result concerns the installed game files. A cache clear concerns locally cached configuration data. A library repair concerns permissions in a Steam library folder. Client-conflict guidance matters when Steam itself is affected. Valve/Source display options are limited to their documented game scope. The outcome of one step does not automatically explain a different symptom.
Change one thing at a time and retry the same game after each relevant check. That makes the comparison meaningful: you can report whether the button still returns to Play, whether the process still disappears, whether Steam stays open, or whether the “Preparing to launch” message remains. If nothing changes, that is useful evidence, not a reason to assume the opposite of what the step was designed to address.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I try first if a Steam game won’t launch?
Record what happens when you click Play, then exit and restart Steam. If that does not help, restart the computer, verify the game’s installed files through Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of Game Files, and retry it.
How do I verify a Steam game’s files?
In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of Game Files. Let the check finish, then try launching the game again. Steam says verification checks installed files and can fix them if necessary.

Will clearing Steam’s download cache fix a game crash?
Not necessarily. Steam says clearing the cache flushes locally cached configuration data and reacquires it from Steam’s servers. It is a targeted check for symptoms tied to a download, update, or cached Steam state, not a universal fix for every startup crash.
When should I repair a Steam library folder?
Use Settings > Storage, open the menu for the library containing the game, and select Repair Folder when Steam reports a library write or permission problem. Steam describes the repair as refreshing library-folder permissions; it is not a routine fix for every game that closes.
Why does Steam say “Preparing to launch” and then do nothing?
That message alone does not identify the cause. Steam’s support guidance directs Windows users to current Microsoft update instructions and Steam Play users to Valve’s Proton issue resource. Follow the path for your platform, and note whether Steam remains open, a game process appears, or an error is shown.

Can I use Steam launch options to fix any game’s display problem?
No. Steam’s listed video and display launch options are scoped to Valve/Source games and have no effect on other Steam games. Follow the game-specific guidance only when the title and symptom fit.
Should I uninstall Steam to fix a game that crashes at startup?
Not as an early troubleshooting step. Steam warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content. Try the targeted checks first and consult Steam’s current instructions before removing the client or installed files.
What details should I give Steam Support or the game’s support team?
Include the game title, operating system and version, GPU and driver, exact error and a screenshot if available, what happens after clicking Play, whether Steam stays open, when the issue began, recent game/driver/mod changes, and the checks you have already tried.
The Bottom Line
Start by recording the exact behavior, restarting Steam and the computer, and verifying the affected game’s files. Then choose a targeted check: clear the download cache for a download or cached-state symptom, repair the relevant library for a reported permission issue, investigate client conflicts if Steam itself crashes, or use Valve/Source display guidance only for a supported title. If the game still will not launch, contact the appropriate support channel with the error, platform, hardware, recent changes, and steps tried. Avoid uninstalling Steam casually because Steam warns that doing so deletes game content.
