Identify which failure you actually have
Do not troubleshoot launch and controller symptoms as though they were the same fault. A game can fail before its window appears, launch normally but ignore input, or accept a controller in Steam while rejecting it after the game starts. Each case has a different shortest path.

Write down the operating system, game name, controller model, connection type, exact error text, and whether the controller appears in Steam. Also note whether the game is native to your platform, uses Steam Play, or opens a separate launcher. Those details determine which branch below applies and give support a useful reproduction case.
Fix a Steam game that will not launch
1. Restart before changing files or security settings
- Save work and restart the computer.
- Open Steam again and try the game.
- If it still fails, exit Steam completely from the Steam menu or notification area, start it again, and retest.
A fresh restart rules out a stuck process, incomplete update, or temporary driver state without changing your installation. Steam Support’s controller guidance gives the same practical advice: “Restart the devices you’re having trouble with to see whether this resolves the issue you’re experiencing.”

2. Update the platform and the drivers it uses
Install pending updates for the operating system and the graphics hardware, then restart. On Windows, use Windows Update and your graphics-card manufacturer’s current driver. On Linux, apply the distribution updates and the supported graphics-driver update. On macOS, install the available macOS update. A game can fail at startup when its runtime, graphics driver, or operating-system component is older than the version expected by the title.
Do not assume that a game listed in your library supports every operating system. Open the game’s store page and check the supported platform before spending time on compatibility settings.
3. Compare your computer with the game’s requirements
Use the requirements shown on the game’s store page as a compatibility check, not a guarantee of a smooth launch. Check the operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, graphics-driver feature level, and available storage against the listed minimum and recommended specifications. A computer that is only at or slightly above minimum requirements can still encounter startup or performance problems, particularly after a game update.

If the title has separate 32-bit, 64-bit, or platform-specific editions, make sure Steam is installing the edition your system can run. A missing platform requirement cannot be repaired by verifying files.
4. Verify the installed files
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish; it can take several minutes.
- Launch the game again after Steam completes any replacement download.
Steam may report that one or more local configuration files failed verification. That is normal when those files are user-specific and are not replaced by the service; Steam says such configuration-file results can be ignored. Do not delete saves or configuration folders merely because the verification summary mentions them.
5. Remove likely software conflicts without disabling protection wholesale
Close non-essential background programs and retest. Capture tools, overlays, hardware monitors, controller remappers, and other utilities that inject into a game can block startup or alter input. Change one category at a time so you know which program affected the result.

Keep security protection enabled while diagnosing. If the problem is a missing executable, inspect your antivirus history or quarantine instead of turning the antivirus off. Restore or allow a file only after confirming that it belongs to the game and is legitimate. If you cannot establish that, leave it quarantined and contact the game developer or Steam Support.
When Steam reports Missing Executable
The exact message Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable) means Steam cannot find the program it was told to start. The usual possibilities supported by Steam Support’s troubleshooting guidance are an antivirus quarantine or a missing or corrupted game file.
- Restart the computer and Steam.
- Check the antivirus detection and quarantine history for the game’s executable.
- If the detection is a false positive and the file is confirmed safe, restore or allow that specific file.
- Return to Library > game Properties > Installed Files and run Verify integrity of game files.
- Try the game again after Steam downloads any missing component.
If the error remains, submit a Steam Support ticket for the missing-executable case. Include an uncropped screenshot showing the complete error, a Steam System Report, and the list of conflicting programs you already removed or closed. An uncropped image preserves the details support staff need to identify the exact launch path.
Platform-specific launch checks

Linux games using Steam Play or Proton
For a title without native Linux support, consult that game’s Steam Play discussion for reports about the specific release and Proton version. Steam also provides a Proton bug database for reporting compatibility problems. Treat Proton as a game-by-game compatibility layer, not as a universal launch repair. If a new game update introduces a regression, changing Proton versions may be discussed by the game’s community, but the evidence and result are specific to that title.
Find where the controller failure occurs
Open Steam’s controller settings before changing the game’s layout. In the current 2026 Steam Controller guide, connection details are available at Settings > Controller > Details. Use that screen to answer two questions:

- Does Steam show it but the game ignores it? Work on Steam Overlay, supported input type, competing devices, and software conflicts.
This distinction prevents you from rebuilding a game layout when the computer has not established a controller connection in the first place. Test one connection mode at a time and record the result. A controller that appears over Bluetooth but not through a receiver points to a different next step than one that is absent in every mode.

If Steam does not detect the controller
Match the test to the controller’s supported connection
Do not generalize advice for one model to every gamepad. The current Steam Controller guide describes three connection modes for that controller: its included Puck receiver, Bluetooth, and wired USB-C. Other controllers may support only one or two of these, may use a different receiver, or may require a dedicated pairing procedure.
- Power the controller off and on, then restart the computer and Steam.
- Reconnect the receiver, re-pair Bluetooth, or reconnect the cable according to the controller’s manual.
- Install available Steam, operating-system, and controller-firmware updates.
- Return to Settings > Controller > Details and confirm whether Steam now lists the device.
For a receiver-based Steam Controller, check signal strength and line of sight. Move the receiver away from likely interference and remove obstructions between it and the controller. A receiver that appears connected but drops repeatedly can be suffering from radio interference rather than a game configuration problem.
Use a wired test only when the controller supports it
If the controller supports wired USB-C, a known-good USB-C data cable can distinguish a wireless pairing problem from a broader controller or driver problem. A charge-only cable will not provide data. This test is not universal: it does nothing for a controller without wired USB-C support, and it cannot repair a game that will not launch. It is a diagnostic accessory, not a replacement for the free software checks above.

Check Steam Overlay first
Steam Input configurations often depend on Steam Overlay being available inside the game. Launch the title and use the Steam Overlay shortcut. If the overlay does not appear, review the game’s Steam settings and any overlay-blocking software before changing the controller layout. A separate launcher, elevated-permission requirement, or anti-cheat component can prevent the overlay from attaching.
Use an input type the game supports
Check the selected Steam Input configuration and the game’s documented controller support. Some games expect XInput-style input, while others support a different input path. A layout can be valid in Steam yet ineffective in a game that does not accept that input type. Choose a configuration designed for the game’s supported style rather than assuming every template works everywhere.
Remove competing devices and utilities for one diagnostic launch
- Disconnect other gamepads, wheels, fight sticks, and unusual input devices.
- Temporarily close controller remappers, XInput emulators, capture software, and other utilities that can intercept input.
- Restart the game with only the intended controller connected.
- If input returns, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the conflict.
Some games prioritize the first controller they enumerate or change behavior when several devices are present. Steam’s legacy controller guidance specifically identifies XInput emulators, capture software, and similar utilities as possible conflicts.

Non-Steam games and external launchers
A title bought outside Steam can sometimes use Steam Input if its executable is added to the Steam library and started through Steam:
- Open the Steam client menu and choose the option to add a non-Steam product to the library.
- Select the game’s executable, or browse to it when Steam does not list it automatically.
- Save the shortcut, connect only the intended controller, and launch the game from that Steam library entry.
- Test the overlay and controller response before adding other devices or utilities back.
This is a compatibility attempt, not a guarantee. An independent launcher may require administrator rights, an anti-cheat system may reject injected input or overlays, and a game without Steam Overlay support may not accept Steam Input. If the launcher starts a different child process, Steam may attach to the launcher rather than the actual game. In those cases, the publisher’s launcher and controller documentation take priority.
Run a controlled retest instead of changing everything
After each change, launch the same game with the same connection mode and note exactly what changed. For a launch failure, keep the controller disconnected until the game reaches its menu; for an input failure, keep the game and platform version unchanged while testing one controller. This separates a game-process problem from a device-enumeration problem.
Once a test succeeds, add devices and background utilities back one at a time. If the symptom returns, the last item is a strong conflict candidate. Avoid combining a driver update, a new overlay setting, a Proton change, and a file verification in one attempt: you may fix the issue but lose the information needed to prevent it recurring.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly delete saves or configuration folders when verification reports local configuration files; Steam says those results can be normal.
- Do not restore an antivirus-quarantined executable unless you have confirmed it is the legitimate game file.
- Do not assume a Steam Controller’s Puck, Bluetooth, or USB-C instructions apply to another controller model.
- Do not treat a non-Steam shortcut as proof that Steam Input, Overlay, or anti-cheat will work with that title.
- Do not treat Proton as a universal Linux fix; compatibility can change by game and release.
What to do when the checklist does not work
Stop repeating the same verification cycle once you have confirmed that the operating system, drivers, requirements, files, controller connection, overlay, and conflicting software are not the cause. Steam’s general launch guidance says that configurations vary and directs players to the game’s developer when the common steps do not resolve the issue.

Contact the developer with the exact game version, operating system, hardware, controller model and connection type, complete error text, and the steps that changed the behavior. A compact decision path
- No game window: restart, update the platform and drivers, compare requirements, verify files, then close non-essential software.
- Missing Executable: inspect antivirus quarantine before verifying files; restore only a confirmed-safe executable; escalate with the requested report if it remains missing.
- Controller absent in Steam: use the controller’s supported receiver, Bluetooth, or wired mode; update firmware; check interference and cable data capability.
- Controller visible in Steam but dead in-game: test Overlay, select a supported input type, disconnect other devices, and close emulators or capture tools.
