Start by defining exactly what is failing
“Not responding” can describe several different incidents: a browser timeout, a white or blank page, an HTTP 500 response, a critical-error screen, a database-connection message, or an administrator dashboard that loads indefinitely. Each points to a different layer of the stack. Do not begin by deleting plugins or replacing core files; first establish the failure’s scope.

Public pages fail, but /wp-admin/ works |
Front-end PHP, theme, a front-end plugin, cache, or external request | Whether the dashboard and a basic page load normally | Check Recovery Mode and isolate plugins, then test the theme |
/wp-admin/ fails, but a cached public page appears |
Admin-only plugin code, PHP memory, authentication, or server limits | Whether a fresh private browser session reaches login | Use the administrator email and host logs; disable plugins through the file manager if necessary |
| Both front end and dashboard fail | Fatal PHP error, database access, core files, DNS, SSL, firewall, or server outage | HTTP status, web-server log, and database reachability | Capture logs before changing files and ask the host to confirm service status |
| Blank page or HTTP 500 | Usually an unhandled PHP fatal error, exhausted memory, incompatible code, or damaged files | wp-content/debug.log and PHP error log |

| Browser reports a timeout | Long-running PHP, resource exhaustion, DNS, network rules, or an unavailable external service | Whether the server returns any status at all and whether other sites on the account respond | Check resource use, PHP limits, DNS, SSL, firewall, and host-side logs |
Write down the time of the failure, the URL that failed, whether you were logged in, the browser message, and the status code. Take a screenshot if it contains an error identifier. If only one URL fails, keep that distinction; a site-wide outage and a broken page template require different investigations.
- Test the home page, one known post, the login page, and
/wp-admin/in a private window. - Try the same URLs from a second network or device to rule out a local DNS or browser cache problem.
- Do not repeatedly refresh a site that is timing out if the server may be under heavy load.
- Confirm that the domain resolves and that the certificate is valid before treating every failure as a WordPress problem.
Use WordPress Recovery Mode first
WordPress Recovery Mode was introduced in WordPress 5.2. When WordPress detects a fatal PHP error during a normal page load—not during CRON or another background task—it can automatically activate Recovery Mode. WordPress sends the site administrator an email containing a special link. Opening that link starts a protected session in which the faulty plugin or theme is paused for that administrator, while an error notice identifies the component involved.

- Open the administrator mailbox associated with the site and search for a WordPress Recovery Mode message. Check spam and filtering rules if it is not in the inbox.
- Use the link from the message in the same browser session. The link is session-specific, so copying only the visible error text will not reproduce the recovery session.
- Read the component name and the PHP error shown in the dashboard. Record both before making a change.
- Deactivate, update, or correct the named plugin or theme. If an update is unavailable, leave it paused while you investigate compatibility.
- Exit Recovery Mode and load the normal site in a private window. Test both the public site and the dashboard.
Recovery Mode does not repair the underlying code; it temporarily prevents the identified component from running for your administrator session. If no email arrives, the error may occur before WordPress can send mail, may be caused by a background task, or may be outside the application. Continue with logging and host-side checks rather than repeatedly requesting recovery links.
Capture logs before changing files
Logs are the shortest path from a symptom to a cause. WordPress’s debugging system can write PHP errors to wp-content/debug.log, while the host’s PHP and web-server logs can show errors that occur before WordPress loads. Ask the host where those logs are located if you cannot see them in the control panel.
To enable temporary logging, edit wp-config.php and place these definitions before the line that says WordPress should stop editing the file:
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
- Make a backup of
wp-config.phpbefore editing it. - Load the failing URL once, or attempt the failing dashboard action once, to create a clean log entry.
- Open
wp-content/debug.logand note the first fatal error, the file path, the line number, and the component directory named in the stack trace. - Compare that timestamp with the PHP-FPM or PHP error log and the web-server log. A 500 entry with no WordPress log entry often means the request failed before WordPress initialized.
- After diagnosis, set
WP_DEBUGback tofalseand remove or archive logs according to the host’s policy.
Do not set WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY to true on a public site while visitors are present. On-screen stack traces can reveal file paths, database details, API keys, and other sensitive information. Debug logging can also add disk writes and affect performance, so it should be temporary.
Look for patterns rather than isolated warnings. A fatal “call to undefined function” or “class not found” points toward an incompatible plugin, theme, or PHP version. “Allowed memory size exhausted” points toward memory limits or unusually heavy work. A database-driver error, connection refusal, or authentication failure belongs in the database section below.

Disable plugins safely when you cannot log in
Plugins are a common cause of a newly broken site, especially after an update, a PHP-version change, or a configuration change. The safest test is reversible isolation: disable everything, verify the result, and reactivate one component at a time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the dashboard still works
- Go to Plugins in the WordPress dashboard.
- Select all active plugins, choose Deactivate, and apply the bulk action.
- Open the public site and repeat the request that failed.
- If the error is gone, reactivate plugins individually, testing after each activation. The plugin whose activation restores the failure is the prime suspect.
- Leave the suspect inactive while checking its changelog, PHP compatibility, configuration, and available update. Do not reactivate several plugins at once, or you lose the comparison.
When the dashboard is unavailable
- Use SFTP, FTP, or the hosting file manager and make a backup or download of the current directory listing first.
- Open
wp-contentand renamepluginsto a temporary name such asplugins.hold. Renaming the directory disables the plugins while preserving their settings and files. - Load the front end and
/wp-admin/. If they recover, the outage is strongly associated with a plugin rather than the entire WordPress installation. - Rename the directory back to
plugins. If the dashboard becomes available, reactivate plugins one at a time and test each activation. - If the site remains broken with the directory renamed, restore the original name and continue to the theme, database, PHP, and server checks.
Do not delete a plugin as a first diagnostic step. Deletion can remove files needed for later inspection and may erase plugin-specific data. Isolation gives you a reversible test and keeps the evidence intact.
Test the active theme
A theme can produce the same white screen, critical error, or 500 response as a plugin. If plugin isolation does not change the result, switch to an available standard WordPress theme.
With dashboard access
Open Appearance and then Themes, activate an installed standard theme, and test the failed URL. If the site works, compare the active theme’s functions, template files, recent edits, and PHP compatibility before returning to it.
Without dashboard access
- Use FTP, SFTP, or the hosting file manager to open
wp-content/themes. - Identify the directory of the active theme from the log or from the site’s configuration.
- Rename that directory temporarily. WordPress will attempt to fall back to an available default theme.
- Test the front end and dashboard. If they recover, install or restore a known-good standard theme before troubleshooting the original.
This fallback works only if an available default theme is present and readable. Do not rename every theme directory; keep at least one usable fallback. A theme change can alter menus, widgets, layouts, and custom code, so treat it as an isolation test and restore the intended theme only after fixing its cause.

Resolve database connection failures
An “Error establishing a database connection” message means WordPress cannot complete a connection to its database. The cause may be incorrect credentials, an incorrect database host, a database service outage, a quota problem, or a compromised installation.
- Open
wp-config.phpand verify the database name, database user, password, and host against the values supplied by the host. Preserve the file’s syntax and quotation marks. - Ask the host whether the database server is running, whether the account has reached a storage or connection quota, and whether there is a current outage.
- Check whether other applications or sites using the same database server are failing. A broad failure strengthens the case for host escalation.
- Review the PHP and web-server logs for connection refusals, authentication failures, or database-server timeouts.
- If the credentials and host status are correct but the behavior remains unexplained, treat possible compromise seriously: preserve logs and backups, ask the host for account-level indicators, and scan the site with an appropriate security service.
Do not “fix” a database error by changing credentials randomly. A new password must be updated consistently in the hosting account and in wp-config.php; otherwise the symptom becomes harder to interpret.
Investigate timeouts, memory limits, loopbacks, and REST failures
A request that never returns can be caused by work that is too heavy for the current limits, a blocked outbound request, a network control, or a server that is already overloaded. WordPress’s front-end and administrative memory defaults are not guarantees: the WordPress Hosting Team documents a default WP_MEMORY_LIMIT of 40M for single-site front-end requests and a default WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT of 256M for administrative requests. The host’s PHP memory_limit can prevent WordPress from increasing either value.
| Evidence | Likely area | Checks to request or perform |
|---|---|---|
| “Allowed memory size exhausted” in the log | PHP memory or a component doing unusually heavy work | Check PHP memory_limit, host resource graphs, image/import jobs, and the component named in the stack trace |
| Request runs until the browser or proxy times out | Long PHP execution, external API wait, database query, or overloaded account | Compare PHP execution limits with server timeouts and inspect slow-request or PHP logs |
| Site Health reports a failed loopback | WordPress cannot connect back to its own site | Check DNS resolution, SSL certificate, firewall rules, HTTP authentication, and plugins that block requests |
| REST API check fails while pages load | REST route, authentication, rewrite, security rule, or plugin interference | Test the REST endpoint, inspect web-server status codes, and isolate plugins one by one |
| Failures coincide with traffic or scheduled jobs | Resource exhaustion or a background task | Ask the host for CPU, RAM, process, database, and rate-limit data for the failure window |
A loopback is a request WordPress makes back to the site to verify that a change did not break it. A failed loopback does not always mean visitors see an outage, but it can prevent scheduled checks, editor operations, or Site Health tests from completing. Plugins, DNS, SSL, firewalls, and HTTP authentication can all interfere.

Do not raise every timeout and memory value blindly. Higher limits can hide an inefficient query, consume shared resources, or collide with a host-enforced ceiling. First identify the operation that is slow and ask the host which limits actually apply to the account.

Repair a failed upgrade or damaged core files
A failed update can leave incomplete WordPress core files and produce a 500 response or a missing-function fatal error. Before replacing anything, confirm that a current backup exists and preserve the logs that show what failed.
- Check the filesystem for an update lock or maintenance state and review the PHP and web-server logs for the failed operation.
- Verify ownership and permissions with the host. Files that the PHP process cannot read, or an account that cannot write during an update, can cause partial installations.
- Use the official manual-update procedure appropriate to your WordPress version. Download a clean package from the official WordPress distribution, upload fresh
wp-adminandwp-includesdirectories, and replace the core files in the site root as directed. - Never overwrite
wp-content, the site’s uploads, or custom files when repairing core. Keep a backup of the existing root before replacing anything. - Load the site and dashboard, then check that the database upgrade has completed. Reinstall or update plugins and themes only after core is stable.
If you cannot distinguish core files from custom files, stop before uploading. A host or WordPress professional can compare checksums, restore a known-good backup, and preserve configuration safely.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check DNS, SSL, firewall, and server controls
If logs show no application error, or if the request never reaches WordPress, the fault may be outside the application. Ask the host to verify the domain’s DNS records, the web-server virtual host, certificate and SSL termination, firewall or Web Application Firewall rules, HTTP authentication, rate limits, and the status of the PHP and database services.
- DNS: Confirm that the domain resolves to the current server and that the
wwwand non-wwwnames are configured as intended. - SSL: Check certificate validity, the certificate chain, and whether a proxy is connecting to the origin with the correct protocol.
- Firewall rules: Look for a rule blocking your IP, WordPress loopbacks, REST requests, XML-RPC requests used by a legitimate integration, or the host’s health checks.
- HTTP authentication: A password gate or staging restriction can cause loopback and REST checks to fail even while a browser with credentials can view pages.
- Server resources: Request CPU, memory, process, disk, inode, database-connection, and rate-limit status for the exact time of the outage.
These checks are especially important when a clean plugin and theme isolation produces no change. Application-level fixes cannot repair a stopped PHP service, a full disk, a broken virtual host, or a firewall rule that drops the request before WordPress runs.
Recognize a possible compromise
A database failure or unexplained outage does not prove a compromise, but unexplained configuration changes, unfamiliar administrator accounts, altered core files, injected redirects, or repeated malicious requests justify a security branch. Preserve the current state and logs before cleaning files. Ask the host about account access, database status, malware indicators, and available snapshots, then run a reputable site scan. Restore from a known-clean backup only after identifying how the compromise occurred and rotating affected credentials.

Do not download replacement plugins or themes from unofficial sources to “repair” a broken site. Unknown packages can add malware and destroy the timeline needed for investigation.
When to escalate to the host or a professional
Escalate when application isolation does not restore service, when you cannot safely use FTP or a file manager, or when the evidence points to infrastructure. Give the host a concise incident record:

Ask specifically for PHP and web-server logs, database status, account resource limits, DNS and SSL checks, firewall or server-rule review, and confirmation of recent maintenance. If the site handles payments, personal data, or an active security incident, use a qualified WordPress professional rather than experimenting on production.
After the site responds again
- Turn public debugging off and secure or remove diagnostic logs that contain sensitive data.
- Re-enable plugins one at a time, testing the public site, dashboard, REST checks, and any critical publishing workflow after each activation.
- Restore the intended theme only after its code or compatibility issue is addressed.
- Confirm that backups complete and that at least one recent backup can be restored in a test location.
- Record the root cause, the change that fixed it, the affected version, and the host-side limits so the next incident starts with evidence rather than guesses.
The reliable recovery pattern is controlled isolation: identify the failing surface, preserve evidence, use Recovery Mode when available, capture logs, disable one class of component at a time, verify database and server conditions, and replace core files only through a backed-up manual process. That sequence minimizes data loss and tells you when the problem belongs to the host rather than WordPress.
