Run Grafana as its own service, install and enable the official alexanderzobnin-zabbix-app plugin, then add a Zabbix data source that points to the complete API endpoint ending in api_jsonrpc.php. Authenticate with a read-only Zabbix account or an API token, test the connection, and build panels by selecting host groups, hosts, and items. This setup lets you turn existing Zabbix server metrics into reusable Grafana dashboards without requiring a particular hardware model.

What this architecture does
Zabbix remains responsible for collecting and storing monitoring data. Grafana is a separate visualization and dashboard service. The Zabbix data-source plugin asks the Zabbix API for hosts, items, history, problems, annotations, and other supported objects, then renders the responses as Grafana panels. Grafana Labs describes the integration plainly: “The Zabbix data source connects Grafana to your Zabbix monitoring infrastructure.”

Nothing in this design requires Grafana and Zabbix to run on the same machine. You can place Grafana on a dedicated virtual machine, a container host, or another server that can reach the Zabbix API. The important path is from the Grafana server to the Zabbix endpoint; queries are executed from Grafana, not from the browser on which you view a dashboard.
| Component | Role | What must be reachable |
|---|---|---|
| Zabbix server | Collects metrics and exposes the API | The API URL and its network path must be reachable from Grafana |
| Grafana | Runs dashboards, queries, alerting, and visualization | Outbound access to Zabbix and any configured database |
| Zabbix plugin | Translates Grafana queries into Zabbix requests | Installed and enabled in Grafana |
| Browser | Displays the Grafana interface | Access to Grafana; it does not query Zabbix directly |
Prerequisites and compatibility checks
Check these conditions before installing anything:
- Use Grafana 11.6.0 or later, which is the minimum version listed on the current Zabbix plugin documentation.
- Have a running Zabbix server with API access enabled.
- Have a Zabbix account that can read every host group, host, and item you intend to graph. A user who cannot see a host will not make that host appear in Grafana.
- Know the complete API endpoint, including the
api_jsonrpc.phppath. A base site URL without this path is not the documented endpoint. - Decide whether to authenticate with a username and password or with an API token.
- Confirm DNS, routing, firewall rules, TLS certificates, and proxy behavior between Grafana and Zabbix.
Compatibility is release-sensitive. Check the plugin, Grafana, and Zabbix versions together whenever you upgrade. The minimum Grafana version and authentication behavior documented today can change in a later plugin release.

Install and enable the Zabbix plugin
Install from the Grafana interface
- Sign in to your self-managed Grafana instance.
- Open Administration → Plugins and data → Plugins.
- Search for Zabbix.
- Open the official Zabbix app plugin and choose Install.
- When installation completes, click Enable.
Installation alone does not expose the data source. Grafana Labs identifies Zabbix as an app plugin, so you must install it and then enable it before the data source becomes available.
Install from the command line
On a self-managed Grafana installation, the repository documents this command:
grafana cli plugins install alexanderzobnin-zabbix-app
Restart Grafana if your package or service workflow requires it, then open the plugin page and verify that the plugin is enabled. If the Zabbix option is missing under data-source creation, return to the plugin page first; an installed-but-disabled app is the usual cause.
Add the Zabbix data source
- Open Connections → Add new connection.
- Search for Zabbix and select the Zabbix data source.
- Enter a descriptive name, such as
Production Zabbix. The name is what dashboard editors will see later. - In the API URL field, enter the full endpoint. For example:
https://zabbix.example.com/api_jsonrpc.php. - Select either username/password authentication or API-token authentication and enter the corresponding credentials.
- Click Save & test.
A successful test reports the Zabbix API version detected by Grafana. Record that result as a useful baseline for future upgrades. If the test fails, work through the troubleshooting section rather than creating panels with an unverified connection.
Why the complete URL matters
The plugin sends JSON-RPC requests to Zabbix’s API endpoint. The documented URL includes api_jsonrpc.php; entering only https://zabbix.example.com or a web-login path can produce a 404 response, an HTML login page, or an opaque connection error. If Zabbix is behind a reverse proxy, make sure the proxy forwards this path and permits the HTTP methods and headers used by the API.

Choose and limit authentication
Username and password
This option uses a normal Zabbix account. Create or designate an account whose permissions include read access to the host groups, hosts, and items needed by Grafana. Avoid using a Zabbix administrator account simply because it is convenient. A read-only account limits the damage if the Grafana credential is exposed.
API token
API tokens are available in Zabbix 5.4 and later. A token avoids storing a user password in the data-source configuration and can be revoked independently. Give the token’s user only the permissions required for dashboards, then rotate it according to your operational policy.
For Zabbix 7.0 and later, the plugin sends authentication in the Authorization HTTP header. A documented reverse-proxy exception applies, so inspect your proxy configuration if a token works when connecting directly but fails through the proxy. Do not “fix” this by granting broader Zabbix permissions; first confirm that the proxy preserves the header.
| Choice | Best fit | Operational concern |
|---|---|---|
| Username and password | Older Zabbix versions or environments already standardised on user credentials | Password rotation changes the data-source secret and may interrupt dashboards |
| API token | Zabbix 5.4+ installations that want independently revocable credentials | For Zabbix 7.0+, verify that proxies pass the Authorization header |
Build your first server graph
Create a panel
- Open an existing dashboard or choose New dashboard.
- Select Add visualization or add a panel from the dashboard editor.
- Choose the Zabbix data source you just tested.
- Use the plugin’s selectors to choose a host group, then a host, then an item.
- Choose a visualization such as a time series, stat, gauge, or table according to the metric.
- Set the dashboard time range and refresh interval appropriate to the item’s collection interval.
- Configure units, legends, thresholds, and field overrides so values are readable.
- Save the panel and then save the dashboard.
A CPU-utilization graph, for example, should use the CPU item exposed by the selected host rather than a manually typed metric name. The host-group and host selectors make it clear which machine supplied the data and reduce spelling mistakes in item keys.
Use template variables for reusable dashboards
Template variables let one dashboard switch between hosts or host groups. Create a variable whose query returns the relevant Zabbix groups or hosts, place the variable in panel selectors, and enable multi-value or “all” behavior only when the resulting query size is manageable. A single server dashboard can then be reused for a development host, a production host, or a complete group without duplicating every panel.

Keep variable names meaningful and constrain their scope. A variable that exposes every host in a large Zabbix installation can make a dashboard difficult to use and can generate unnecessarily broad queries. Start with one group, verify the panels, and expand the selection deliberately.
Add operational context beyond metrics
Problems panel
The plugin supports a Problems panel, allowing a dashboard to show current Zabbix problems beside time-series graphs. This is useful when an operator needs both the symptom (for example, a rising disk-usage line) and the active event state in one view.
Annotations
Annotations place Zabbix events or other selected records on a graph timeline. Use them to correlate a restart, deployment, maintenance window, or alert with a change in a metric. Keep annotation queries focused; a timeline filled with unrelated events can obscure the event you are investigating.
Alerting
The integration supports alerting. Decide whether a condition belongs in Zabbix, Grafana, or both before creating rules. Zabbix may already own trigger logic and event history, while Grafana alert rules can combine data presented in Grafana. Duplicating the same condition in both systems can produce duplicate notifications, so document the authoritative rule and notification route.

API queries versus Direct DB Connection
The normal configuration queries Zabbix through its API. The plugin also offers an optional Direct DB Connection for historical data. A direct database path can improve wide-range historical queries, but it is a different operational design, not a free performance switch.

| Approach | Advantages | Costs and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Zabbix API | Uses the supported API boundary; simpler network and permission model; no database credentials in Grafana | History queries are mediated by the API and may be less suitable for very broad ranges |
| Direct DB Connection | Can improve wide-range historical queries by reading the history database directly | Requires database connector configuration, network access, credentials, and carefully scoped database permissions |
Start with API querying. Consider direct database access only after you have a measured, repeatable need for wide historical ranges and have approved the additional database exposure. Use a read-only database account and restrict its network path. Keep the API data source available for metadata, problems, and functions that still depend on Zabbix’s application layer.
Network and container details
Because all queries run from the Grafana server, firewall rules should permit Grafana’s outbound connection to the Zabbix API. You do not need to expose the Zabbix API directly to every analyst’s browser when Grafana is the intermediary. Conversely, a browser that can open Grafana cannot compensate for a Grafana host that cannot route to Zabbix.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When Grafana runs in a container
Inside a container, localhost means that container itself. Setting the Zabbix URL to http://localhost/ therefore points Grafana at its own network namespace, not at a Zabbix container or a service on the physical host. Use a reachable container-service name on the same network, the host address exposed to the container, or a routable DNS name. Test name resolution and the API path from the Grafana container, not only from your workstation.
TLS and reverse proxies
Use HTTPS when credentials or tokens cross a network you do not fully control. Ensure Grafana trusts the certificate chain presented by the Zabbix endpoint. If a reverse proxy terminates TLS, verify that it forwards /api_jsonrpc.php, preserves the authentication header required by your Zabbix version, and does not redirect API requests to an interactive login page.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a dedicated Zabbix account with the minimum read permissions required.
- Prefer an API token where your Zabbix version and proxy path support it, and store the secret in Grafana’s protected configuration rather than in dashboard text.
- Restrict Grafana’s outbound network access to the Zabbix API and any deliberately configured database endpoint.
- Protect Grafana itself with its normal user, organization, folder, and data-source permissions.
- Back up Grafana’s configuration, dashboards, alert rules, and plugin/version inventory before upgrades.
- Record the Grafana, plugin, and Zabbix versions after each change.
- Test a representative dashboard after upgrading; a successful data-source test does not prove that every old panel or query behaves identically.
- Revoke old tokens and remove unused data sources when systems are retired.
Troubleshoot a failed connection
“Zabbix” is not available when adding a data source
Open Administration → Plugins and data → Plugins and confirm that the Zabbix app is both installed and enabled. Restart Grafana if the plugin installation process requests it. Also verify that the Grafana version meets the documented 11.6.0 minimum.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Save & test reports a 404 or invalid response
Check the URL character by character and restore the /api_jsonrpc.php suffix if it is missing. A proxy that serves a web page at the base domain may still be misrouting the API path. Use the endpoint that Grafana can reach from its own host or container, not merely the URL that works in your desktop browser.
Authentication fails
Confirm the username, password, or token has not expired or been revoked. Check that the account can read at least one target host group and host. With Zabbix 7.0 or later, inspect a reverse proxy for dropped Authorization headers. If password authentication succeeds but token authentication fails, the issue is more likely header handling or token scope than general connectivity.
The test succeeds but hosts or items are missing
The data source can be healthy while the account lacks permission to see particular objects. Compare the Grafana credential’s Zabbix role and host-group permissions with the objects you selected in the Zabbix interface. Also check that the panel is querying the intended data source and that host-group, host, and item variables are not filtering out the desired value.
Panels show no data
Expand the dashboard time range to include a period in which the item collected values. Confirm that the item is enabled and has recent history in Zabbix. Check the panel’s host and item selectors, units, and transformations. If only very wide time ranges fail, evaluate whether the query is a candidate for the optional Direct DB Connection and review Grafana and Zabbix server logs for timeouts.
Dashboards break after an upgrade
Compare the versions recorded before and after the change. Recheck the plugin’s current compatibility requirements, authentication behavior, and any proxy header rules. Test one simple panel first, then variables, annotations, Problems panels, and alert rules. Restore the backed-up Grafana configuration if the change cannot be corrected quickly.

Self-hosting gives you control over placement, network boundaries, plugin enablement, and upgrade timing. It also makes your team responsible for operating Grafana. A managed service shifts some of that work to the provider. The right choice depends less on dashboard features than on who is prepared to own the surrounding service.
| Decision area | Self-hosted Grafana | Managed Grafana |
|---|---|---|
| Operational ownership | You run the Grafana host, service, plugin, credentials, monitoring, and incident response | The provider operates the underlying service; you still configure data sources, permissions, and dashboards |
| Upgrades | You choose timing and test Grafana, plugin, and Zabbix compatibility | The provider controls some platform upgrades; you must track service-specific compatibility |
| Backups | You must back up dashboards, settings, alert rules, and relevant secrets | Backup scope depends on the service contract and export facilities |
| Network exposure | You design the route from Grafana to the Zabbix API and can keep it inside your network | You must allow the managed service to reach Zabbix or establish an approved private connection |
| Cost model | Infrastructure and staff time are your costs; software licensing depends on your deployment | Recurring service charges replace much of the infrastructure operation |
For an existing Zabbix installation on a private network, self-hosting Grafana beside the monitoring environment often simplifies connectivity. For teams that do not want to patch, back up, and monitor another service, a managed option may reduce operational work, provided its network and plugin requirements fit the Zabbix deployment.
A repeatable rollout plan
- Inventory: list the Zabbix host groups, hosts, item types, problems, and time ranges the dashboard must show.
- Place Grafana: choose a host or container network with a reliable route to the Zabbix API.
- Verify versions: confirm Grafana 11.6.0 or later and check current plugin/Zabbix compatibility.
- Install securely: install and enable
alexanderzobnin-zabbix-app, then create a least-privilege Zabbix account or token. - Test the data source: use the complete API URL and do not proceed until Save & test reports the Zabbix API version.
- Prototype: build one time-series panel for one known host and item.
- Generalize: add host-group, host, and item variables only after the prototype returns the expected data.
- Add context: introduce Problems, annotations, and alerting where they answer a defined operational question.
- Harden: restrict access, protect credentials, document firewall routes, and back up the finished dashboard.
- Operate: monitor Grafana, review logs, test dashboards after upgrades, and rotate credentials on schedule.
This sequence keeps failures isolated. If the first panel works, later problems are more likely to be variable scope, permissions, query range, or visualization settings rather than basic installation or routing.
