The fix depends on what Fortnite feature is restricted and where the message appears. If Epic says the account needs parental permission, a parent or guardian must complete Epic’s consent process; if the restriction is for chat or appears on a console, check the relevant Epic or platform settings. A Cabined Account can still play Fortnite while some features are unavailable.
First, identify what is restricted
Read the full message and note which feature is blocked: access to Fortnite, chat, purchases, or account linking. Also note where the restriction appears: in an Epic account message, Fortnite’s settings, or the console or device’s family controls. These clues point to different fixes, and changing one setting will not necessarily affect another.

- Message about parental permission: check whether the Epic account is a Cabined Account.
- Chat or content setting: review Epic parental controls and Fortnite’s in-game controls.
- Restriction on a console: check its family settings and confirm Fortnite is using the intended Epic account.
If Epic says the account needs parental permission
Complete the consent request
Epic says an account is Cabined when the player indicated an age below 13 or below their country’s age of digital consent, whichever threshold is higher. Some features are disabled until a parent or guardian completes consent or the player reaches the applicable age threshold. The player can still play Fortnite while consent is pending. See Epic’s Cabined Accounts information.
- The parent or guardian should open the consent email sent by Epic.
- Review Epic’s Terms of Service and follow the prompts to configure available permissions.
- Complete adult verification if requested. Epic lists options such as a face scan, payment card, or ID scan, but available methods vary by region. Follow the options shown for your account in Epic’s parental-consent process.
- Confirm that the setup flow reports completion. Then check whether the restricted feature is available; some settings may still be limited by the player’s age.
If the consent email is missing or incorrect
From the child’s Epic account settings, request parental permission again or update the guardian email address. Epic says this resends the request. The parent or guardian should check that inbox and follow the new message rather than trying to change the player’s age. Instructions are available in Epic’s Cabined Accounts information and parental-consent help.

If chat or content is restricted
Epic account parental controls and Fortnite’s in-game controls are separate settings. After consent is complete, the parent or guardian may still need to adjust an allowed permission in the appropriate controls. Age can limit which choices are available; consent does not necessarily remove every restriction. See Epic’s Fortnite parental-controls guidance.
Check the age limits for chat
Epic’s current guidance lists these voice and text chat options by age, subject to the account’s settings:

|---|---|
| Under 10 | Friends Only |
| 10–12 | Friends Only, or Friends and Teammates |
| 13 and older | Friends Only, Friends and Teammates, or Everyone |
If an option is unavailable, changing the menu alone may not override an age-based limit or a parent’s control. Consult Epic’s parental-controls guidance for the current settings.
If the restriction appears on a console
Console family settings are an additional layer: completing Epic consent does not automatically change restrictions configured on the console or device. Check that platform’s family or privacy controls for the affected feature.

Also verify that Fortnite is connected to the Epic account you intend to use. Compare the Epic Account ID shown on the Epic website with the ID displayed in Fortnite. If they do not match, the settings you changed may belong to a different account. Epic explains how to check which Epic account is connected to a console account.
