The button sequence varies by console model, so follow the current instructions for your exact model on Xbox Support’s Offline System Update page.
What you need
- A computer with internet access to download the current OSU1 package.
- A USB flash drive formatted as NTFS, with at least 6 GB of space. This is the minimum specified in a Microsoft Community support response; a particular brand is not required.
- Access to the console’s Startup Troubleshooter. The controls used to open it depend on the Xbox One model.
How to install the offline update
- On the computer, open Xbox Support’s Offline System Update page and download the current OSU1 package. Use Microsoft’s page for the current download and instructions rather than an unofficial file mirror.
- Format the USB flash drive as NTFS and make sure it has at least 6 GB of space. Follow the file-preparation instructions on the Xbox Support page for the package you downloaded.
- Use the current model-specific instructions on Xbox Support to start the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter. A Microsoft Community response describes using the Pair and Eject buttons on some models and a Pair-only route for the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, which has no Eject button. Check the live Xbox Support directions for your console before trying a button sequence.
- Connect the prepared USB drive when instructed, select Offline System Update in the Startup Troubleshooter, and follow the on-screen prompts until the console finishes.
If the offline update fails
Write down the complete error code shown on screen and use Xbox Support’s current update troubleshooting guidance. A failed OSU1 attempt does not by itself show that the USB drive is the problem, and the offline update is not established as a fix for every startup or update failure. If the console will not reach the Startup Troubleshooter or the error persists, continue with Microsoft’s guidance for that specific error rather than repeatedly assuming the same USB preparation step will resolve it.

The exact button sequence and live package instructions can vary. The official support page is the authority for the current OSU1 download and model-specific procedure. The available instructions establish a minimum USB capacity of 6 GB; they do not establish a required USB brand, a package version or size, or a complete compatibility and error-code list.
