If Windows charges your LG phone but does not show it for file transfers, start with the phone’s USB mode, then test a known-good data cable and another USB port. Only after those checks should you install the exact LG driver package or repair MTP USB Device in Device Manager. The sequence below covers Windows 10, Windows 8.1/8 and Windows 7, including missing media components and the historical Windows MTP driver problem.
What an “LG USB driver” problem actually means
Several different failures are described as an LG USB driver issue. Windows may charge the phone but show no storage, display the handset as an unknown device, list it under Portable Devices with a warning icon, or detect it but offer no file-transfer access. These symptoms do not automatically mean the driver is damaged.

- Charge-only connection: power reaches the phone, but the cable, port or selected USB mode does not expose a data connection.
- MTP problem: MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is the Windows interface used for ordinary phone file access. A missing or incorrect MTP entry can prevent Explorer from opening the phone.
- Model-driver problem: the LG package is missing, incomplete or not matched to the handset.
- Windows media-component problem: older Windows installations may lack the components MTP needs.
- Operating-system driver history: Microsoft documented a faulty third-party WPD/MTP driver distributed on March 8, 2017 that affected some phones and media devices.
Because the causes overlap, replacing a driver is not the safest first move. A cable or USB-mode check is quicker, reversible and often resolves a phone that is functioning normally.

Work down the table rather than changing several variables at once. After each step, reconnect the phone and check whether it appears in File Explorer and Device Manager.

1. Select the correct USB mode on the LG phone
Unlock the handset before connecting
Connect the phone, unlock its screen and wait for the USB notification. Android can keep data access unavailable while the device is locked. A charging symbol alone is not evidence that Windows has a usable data session.
Choose Media sync (MTP) or File Transfer
Open the USB notification and choose Media sync (MTP) or File Transfer, depending on the LG model and Android version. Leave the phone unlocked for the first connection, then open File Explorer and look under This PC for the handset.
Some LG versions also offer PTP (photo transfer), tethering or an LG software mode. PTP is intended for pictures and may not expose the complete internal storage. Tethering shares the network connection rather than providing normal file browsing. Use MTP/File Transfer when you need documents, music, application files or folders.
What “charge only” tells you
Charge-only mode intentionally supplies power without enabling USB data functions. Switch to MTP/File Transfer and reconnect before concluding that Windows has a driver fault.
2. Eliminate the cable and USB port
Test a cable that is known to carry data
Use a USB data cable that matches the LG phone’s connector: USB-C on newer models or Micro-USB on older ones. Many inexpensive cables are wired for charging only. LG’s support guidance warns: “Even if your device is charging your cable may not transmit data.” Therefore, a charging indicator does not prove that the USB data path works.

Borrow a cable that successfully transfers files from another phone, or test the LG cable with another data-capable device. Avoid a loose connector, visibly damaged insulation or a cable that drops the connection when moved.
Try a different USB port
- Disconnect the phone.
- Plug the same data cable into a different port on the computer, preferably a port directly on the computer rather than an unpowered hub.
- Reconnect with the phone unlocked and set to MTP/File Transfer.
- Wait several seconds, then check File Explorer and Device Manager.
If one port works and another does not, the LG driver is unlikely to be the primary cause. Continue using the working port while you investigate the computer’s USB hardware or hub.
3. Install LG’s official package for the exact model
Find the model-specific support page
Open LG’s Software & Drivers catalog and search for the exact phone model, including its regional or carrier variant when LG lists one. LG also provides Universal Mobile Drivers for LG mobile devices. Prefer the exact-model page whenever it is available; it is the most specific source for the handset.
Do not install a driver intended for a different LG model simply because the connector looks the same. USB-C and Micro-USB describe the plug, not the phone’s driver package.
Install cleanly
- Disconnect the LG phone from the computer.
- Download the Windows package from LG’s support catalog.
- Close phone-management software and other programs that might be using the handset.
- Run the installer with an administrator account and accept its prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Reconnect the unlocked phone, select MTP/File Transfer and test File Explorer.
If the installer reports that a newer driver is already present, continue to the Device Manager procedure instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same package.

4. Repair “MTP USB Device” in Device Manager
Locate the handset
Press Windows key + X and open Device Manager (on Windows 7, open Control Panel, choose System and Security, then System, and select Device Manager). Expand Portable Devices. Depending on the failure, the phone may appear by its LG model, as MTP USB Device, as an unknown device, or with a yellow warning icon.
Select the MTP class manually
- Right-click the handset entry and choose Update Driver.
- Select Browse my computer for driver software.
- Choose the option that lets you pick from available drivers on the computer.
- Select MTP USB Device and continue through the wizard.
- Reconnect the phone and test File Explorer.
This procedure does not erase the phone. It tells Windows to use its MTP device class for the already-connected handset.
If the entry is hidden or keeps returning with an error
- In Device Manager, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Disconnect the phone.
- Right-click the greyed-out or warning-marked LG/MTP entry and choose Uninstall device (or Uninstall on older Windows versions).
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the unlocked phone and select MTP/File Transfer.
Do not remove unrelated USB host-controller entries while trying to repair one phone. If Windows asks whether to delete driver software, leave that box clear unless you are deliberately removing a known bad package and have the correct replacement ready.
5. Check Windows media components
LG notes that the MTP driver may not be installed by default and that availability depends on the Windows version and Windows Media Player. An older LG user guide specifies Windows Media Player 10 or later for MTP synchronization: LG-D852 user guide (PDF).
Windows 10 N and other media-reduced editions
Windows “N” editions omit certain media technologies. If you use one of these editions, check Settings > Apps > Optional features > Add a feature for the Media Feature Pack, install the package that matches your Windows release, restart and test MTP again. The exact package name and availability vary by Windows version.

Windows 7 and Windows 8
On older installations, confirm that Windows Media Player is present and that Windows Update has been applied. If a managed or customized installation removed media components, MTP may remain unavailable even after a driver reinstall. Restore the Windows media feature for that edition, restart, then repeat the Device Manager selection.
Do not confuse media components with the phone driver
Installing Windows Media Player does not substitute for LG’s model package, and installing an LG package cannot restore a media feature removed from Windows. These are separate layers: Windows media support enables MTP, while the device entry and LG package identify the handset.

Microsoft reported an incorrect third-party WPD/MTP device driver released on March 8, 2017. Its bulletin says the faulty driver could block some USB phones and media devices on Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Microsoft’s corrective update removes that driver.
If your LG phone stopped working after updates in that period, install the appropriate current updates for your Windows edition, restart and reconnect the phone. On a computer that cannot update normally, record the Windows edition and build, review installed updates in Control Panel > Programs and Features > View installed updates (Windows 7/8) or Settings > Windows Update > Update history (Windows 10), and follow Microsoft’s guidance for the affected update. Do not delete random update packages solely because their dates are similar.

7. Confirm whether the repair worked
Use three independent checks
- Phone: it remains unlocked and shows MTP/File Transfer rather than Charge only.
- Device Manager: the handset appears without a yellow warning icon, normally under Portable Devices.
- File Explorer: the LG phone appears under This PC and opens the expected internal-storage folders.
Copy a small, noncritical file in both directions. A device that appears in Explorer but fails during every transfer may still have a cable, port, storage or phone-side problem; detection alone does not prove reliable data transfer.
Restart between major changes
After installing a package, uninstalling a device entry or restoring a media feature, restart Windows before the next test. Rebooting clears the old device instance and makes it easier to tell whether the latest change had an effect.

Version-specific notes for Windows 10, 8.1/8 and 7
Windows 10
Use Settings for Windows Update and Optional features, and Device Manager’s standard Update Driver wizard. Windows 10 editions with the “N” suffix require particular attention to media components.

Windows 8 and 8.1
The Windows key + X menu provides a quick path to Device Manager. If the phone was affected by the 2017 WPD/MTP driver incident, bring the installation up to date before attempting repeated LG-driver replacements.
Windows 7
Use Control Panel to reach Device Manager, installed updates and Windows features. Older LG documentation’s Windows Media Player 10-or-later requirement is especially relevant on a customized Windows 7 installation. A missing media component can leave MTP unavailable even when the LG package installed successfully.
When manual troubleshooting is complete
If two known-good data cables, multiple USB ports, the correct phone mode, the exact LG package, manual MTP selection and the relevant Windows media components all fail, test the phone on another Windows computer. If it fails there as well, inspect the phone’s USB connector and back up data over Wi-Fi or another available method before seeking hardware service. If it works elsewhere, the remaining fault is specific to the original Windows installation, its USB hardware or its device-policy settings.
