A mouse that repeatedly disconnects is usually losing power, signal quality, or its software connection. First identify whether it uses Bluetooth or a USB wireless receiver. Then work through power, distance, interference, reconnection, Windows troubleshooting, drivers, and power-management settings in that order. If the same mouse fails on another computer after those checks, the mouse, receiver, batteries, or the computer’s Bluetooth hardware is the likely fault.
Identify the connection before changing settings
Look underneath the mouse, at its packaging, or in Windows Bluetooth settings. A mouse with a small USB dongle is a receiver model; a mouse that appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices without a dongle is using Bluetooth. Some models support both methods, so check which one is active when the dropouts occur.

| Connection | What to inspect first | Typical isolation test |
|---|---|---|
| USB wireless receiver | Fresh batteries, the receiver’s USB port, distance, and radio interference | Move the receiver to another direct USB port and test on a second computer |
| Bluetooth | Battery or charge level, Bluetooth range, nearby USB 3 devices, pairing, drivers, and power settings | Remove and pair the mouse again, then test it near the computer or with another computer |
This distinction matters because a Bluetooth repair will not fix a receiver that is loose or plugged into a failing hub, while changing USB ports cannot repair a damaged Bluetooth radio.
Why a wireless mouse disconnects
- Insufficient power: Weak batteries or a low charge can make the mouse stop responding, reconnect intermittently, or behave sluggishly.
- Receiver or Bluetooth distance: A blocked or distant signal is less reliable than a mouse kept close to the computer.
- Radio-frequency interference: Routers, cordless phones, speakers, monitors, power supplies, other transmitters, large metal surfaces, and some USB 3 or Thunderbolt 3 equipment can disturb wireless links.
- Unstable physical connection: A receiver in a hub, switch, loose port, or obstructed position may repeatedly disappear from Windows.
- Pairing or temporary Windows fault: The device can remain listed but stop exchanging input until Bluetooth is restarted or the mouse is paired again.
- Drivers and power management: Outdated Bluetooth, chipset, or mouse software, or a power-saving setting that turns off an adapter, can cause recurring drops.
- Hardware failure: If the fault follows the mouse to another computer, the mouse, its receiver, batteries, or (for Bluetooth) the computer’s radio may be failing.
Step 1: Restore power and check the physical setup
For a USB receiver mouse
- Turn the mouse off.
- Install a complete set of fresh batteries, observing the polarity marks. If the model has a rechargeable cell, charge it fully using the manufacturer’s supplied method.
- Turn the mouse on and watch its status light, if it has one.
- Unplug the wireless receiver, wait a few seconds, and plug it directly into a working USB port on the computer. Do not use a hub, switch, monitor port, or extension while diagnosing the fault.
- If the mouse is still dropping, try a different USB port. A port on the opposite side of a laptop or the rear of a desktop can change both the physical position and the amount of interference.
Low battery power, metal surfaces, and radio-frequency interference are listed by Logitech as causes of a lost mouse connection. Fresh batteries and a direct receiver connection are the appropriate first checks.

For a Bluetooth mouse
- Switch the mouse off and on.
- Replace its batteries or charge it, then leave it powered on during testing.
- Place the mouse close to the computer, with no cabinet wall or large metal object between them.
- Temporarily move nearby USB 3.0 equipment away from the computer and mouse. Microsoft specifically warns that an unresponsive or sluggish Bluetooth device should not be too close to another device plugged into a USB 3.0 port.
Step 2: Remove sources of wireless interference
Test in a simple layout before changing Windows settings. Put the receiver where it has a clear path to the mouse, or keep the Bluetooth mouse close to the computer. Move the mouse and receiver away from:
- Wi-Fi routers and other wireless transmitters
- Cordless phones
- Speakers and powered audio equipment
- Monitors and their power supplies
- Desktop power bricks and unshielded cables
- Large metal desk surfaces, filing cabinets, and metal PC cases
- USB 3 or Thunderbolt 3 devices, docks, and cables that sit beside the Bluetooth radio or receiver
Apple notes that wireless interference can make Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices disconnect or perform poorly, and specifically identifies USB 3 or Thunderbolt 3 equipment and metal obstructions as possible contributors. Logitech likewise lists nearby transmitters, power supplies, monitors, speakers, and metal surfaces as potential interference sources.
Change one thing at a time. If moving a dock or router stops the dropouts, keep that arrangement or relocate the interfering device rather than repeatedly repairing the mouse.

Step 3: Reconnect the mouse
Re-pair Bluetooth in Windows
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find the mouse, select the three-dot menu beside it, and choose Remove device. The exact wording can vary by Windows release.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again from Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Put the mouse into pairing mode according to its model manual.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth, choose the mouse, and complete pairing.
- Move the pointer for several minutes, including across the area where the disconnection normally happens.
Removing and adding the device again clears a damaged pairing record. If the mouse does not appear, confirm that it is not already paired with another nearby computer, tablet, or console.
Reconnect a USB receiver
- Unplug the receiver and wait briefly.
- Insert it directly into another USB port, without a hub or switch.
- Wait for Windows to recognize it, then turn the mouse off and on.
- If the manufacturer supplies a model-specific pairing or reset procedure, follow that manual. Receiver compatibility and pairing methods differ by model.
Step 4: Run Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting
Windows includes guided diagnostics for Bluetooth problems. Open the Get Help app and search for Bluetooth problems, or use Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter when it is listed. Apply any recommended change, restart if requested, and test the mouse again.
Microsoft’s guidance for recurring Bluetooth disconnections also calls out power-saving settings, outdated drivers, and temporary system glitches. If Battery saver is active, turn it off temporarily under Settings > System > Power & battery and check whether the behavior changes. Battery-saver labels and availability vary by Windows edition and device.

Step 5: Update the software that connects the mouse
Install current Bluetooth, chipset, and mouse software from the computer or mouse manufacturer. Start with the support page for the exact computer model and Windows version; a generic driver may not contain the firmware or power behavior intended for that hardware.
- Save open work and create a restore point if your Windows edition provides that option.
- Install pending Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update, then restart.
- Install the latest Bluetooth and chipset packages supplied for the computer model.
- Install the mouse manufacturer’s current software or firmware only when it is explicitly intended for that model.
- Restart and test before installing another utility. This makes it easier to identify which change helped.
Do not force firmware or receiver software from a different model. A receiver is often model-specific, and an incorrect update can remove the pairing or leave the device unusable.
Step 6: Review Windows power-management settings
Windows may turn off an adapter to save energy. The names and available controls vary by Windows version and computer hardware, so treat this as a diagnostic check rather than a universal setting.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth and identify the computer’s Bluetooth adapter. For a receiver mouse, also inspect Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Open the adapter’s Properties and look for a Power Management tab.
- If present, review Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Clear it temporarily, select OK, restart, and test.
- If the option is absent, do not force it through an unofficial registry change; continue with driver updates and the manufacturer’s support instructions.
On a laptop, compare behavior while plugged in and on battery. A dropout that occurs only on battery points toward a power policy or Battery saver setting, while a dropout in both conditions suggests signal, pairing, driver, or hardware causes.
Step 7: Test the failure on another computer
A second-computer test separates a Windows configuration problem from a physical fault.
- Use fresh batteries or a full charge first.
- For a receiver mouse, take the receiver with the mouse and connect it directly to another computer.
- For Bluetooth, pair the mouse with another compatible computer and keep it nearby during the test.
- Use the mouse long enough to reproduce the original symptom, not just long enough to move the pointer once.
| Result | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| It disconnects on both computers | The mouse, batteries, receiver, or (for Bluetooth) radio hardware is suspect | Check the model manual and arrange a compatible replacement or repair |
| It works on the second computer | The first computer’s port, Bluetooth adapter, drivers, pairing, interference, or power policy is more likely | Continue with that computer’s updates, troubleshooting, and power-setting checks |
| Only the receiver fails | The receiver or its USB connection may be defective | Try another direct port, then verify replacement-receiver compatibility |
| Only Bluetooth fails | The computer’s Bluetooth adapter, pairing, range, or nearby interference may be involved | Re-pair, update the adapter, reduce interference, or test a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter |
When replacement hardware is justified
Replace the batteries before replacing the mouse. If fresh batteries, a clear signal path, a different USB port, re-pairing, driver updates, and power-setting checks do not help, the remaining fault may be physical.

Choosing a replacement receiver
A replacement receiver is not automatically interchangeable. Confirm the exact mouse model and the manufacturer’s compatibility requirements; some receivers pair only with specific product families or require a special utility.
Adding Bluetooth to a computer
A USB Bluetooth adapter is a reasonable conditional purchase when the computer lacks reliable built-in Bluetooth. Choose one supported by your Windows version and follow its driver instructions. An adapter cannot repair a defective mouse or remove interference, so complete the isolation tests first.
Replacing the mouse
If the mouse fails on multiple computers with fresh power and no obvious interference, replacement is more practical than repeatedly changing Windows settings. Keep the old receiver and model information until you confirm that the new mouse works; they may be needed for support or warranty service.
