It can also be confused with a separate network-reachability problem. Check per-core CPU use and the server process while the warning appears, compare the machine with Keen Games’ published hardware guidance, reduce slotCount if necessary, and then verify the query and Steam ports. More RAM or a faster internet package will not fix a CPU-bound simulation by itself.

For four to six players, Keen recommends a 3.2 GHz six-core/12-thread Intel Core i7 or equivalent AMD processor, 16 GB of system RAM, an SSD with at least 30 GB free, and 2 Mbit/s upload capacity per active player. For as many as 16 players, the recommendation rises to a 3.7 GHz eight-core/16-thread CPU while the 16 GB RAM, SSD and per-player upload guidance remain. The procedure below uses those figures as a baseline rather than promising that every warning has one universal cause.

What “Server Overloaded” actually indicates
A dedicated server has to advance the world simulation, process player actions, save the world and exchange state with every connected client. The warning is about that workload, not simply the percentage shown for total CPU use in Windows or Linux. A six-core machine can show modest aggregate usage while one busy core is saturated, and the game thread can still miss its timing target.

Treat these as separate tests. A port failure can prevent a connection even when the simulation is healthy; a CPU bottleneck can cause rubber-banding after everyone has joined even when all ports are open.

Keen Games’ published capacity baseline
Keen’s 2024 dedicated-server guidance gives two useful planning points. They are recommendations for the stated player counts, not a guaranteed performance threshold for every world, operating system or background workload.

The clock-speed and core-count figures matter because server simulation is sensitive to per-thread headroom. A processor with many slower cores is not automatically equivalent to the stated target. Leave operating-system headroom above the game process: Keen’s 2025 FAQ reports approximately 4.4 GB of physical RAM at idle, up to 100 MB of additional physical RAM per player and no more than 6 GB total physical RAM for the server. The rest of a 16 GB machine still has to accommodate the operating system, Steam and any other services.
Measure the symptom before changing settings
Make one short observation during an actual warning. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell which action helped.
- Record the trigger. Note the date and time, the number of connected players, the configured maximum, whether the warning appears at startup or only after players enter, and whether everyone is affected or only players in one region.
- Classify the failure. Rubber-banding and delayed world actions point toward simulation or a live connection. An inability to find or join the server points first toward reachability. If both occur, test them independently.
- Watch each CPU core. Use the operating system’s per-core view while the warning is visible, and identify the Enshrouded server process. Low total CPU is not a clean bill of health if one core or the game thread is continually busy.
- Check memory and disk at the same moment. Look for available RAM, disk free space and storage activity. A brief save-related spike is different from a sustained memory shortage.
- Write down the current configuration. Preserve the existing
enshrouded_server.json, includingslotCountandqueryPort, before editing it. A backup gives you a known rollback point.
Keen does not publish a universal CPU-utilization percentage that guarantees an overload warning will disappear. Use the measurements to establish whether the limiting resource is simulation, memory/storage or connectivity rather than chasing a single percentage.

Lower the player-slot limit when simulation is the bottleneck
Every configured slot represents a possible player whose actions and world state the server must process. Keen’s 2025 configuration documentation explicitly notes that each slot increases the performance impact and says lowering the slot count can mitigate CPU or RAM bottlenecks. The documented range is 1 through 16.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly and make a copy of the installation directory’s
enshrouded_server.json. - Open the file in a plain-text editor and find
slotCount. Set it to the number of players the machine can actually sustain, not the number you might invite eventually. - Keep
queryPortsynchronized with the firewall and router. The default query port is15637; if you use another value, that same value must be opened and forwarded. - Save the file, start the server and repeat the same player-count test. Observe per-core CPU use, memory and the warning instead of assuming success from a clean startup.

}Reducing slots is the lowest-effort way to reduce player-driven load, but it limits simultaneous access. If six players are stable and eight cause repeated warnings, a six-slot server is a valid operational fix while you decide whether a CPU upgrade or a different host is worthwhile.
Repair a stale or malformed server configuration
A JSON syntax error or an old file that was not updated correctly can stop the server from starting or leave settings inconsistent after an update. Keen’s guidance says that a missing configuration file is recreated automatically. When an old file is incorrectly updated, delete that file and let the server generate a fresh one.

- Stop the server and copy the existing JSON somewhere outside the installation directory for reference.
- Remove the problematic file, then launch the server once so it creates a clean configuration.
- Reapply only documented settings, especially the intended
slotCountandqueryPort. Avoid carrying forward unknown or obsolete keys. - Restart again and inspect the startup output or logs for parsing errors. Test with one or two players before opening all planned slots.
Do not edit the file while the server is running; a shutdown can overwrite unsaved changes. If regeneration fixes booting but not rubber-banding, return to per-core CPU and slot-count measurements rather than treating the configuration repair as a performance upgrade.
Separate port and DNS problems from overload
The default query port is 15637, and Steam ports are also required for normal discovery and connections. The exact Steam port rules depend on your deployment, so use Keen’s current dedicated-server and network-troubleshooting instructions for the ports associated with your installation.
- Confirm the server’s configured query port and open that port in the host firewall.
- If the server is behind a router, forward the same port to the host’s local address and ensure the address does not change unexpectedly.
- Open the required Steam ports as specified by Keen, then restart the server and test discovery from a client outside the host’s local network.
- If Steam discovery or joining remains inconsistent, clear Steam’s download cache and flush DNS, both of which Keen lists among its troubleshooting steps. Restart Steam and test again.
A wired Ethernet connection can remove Wi-Fi instability between a local client and the router, but it cannot add simulation time to the game thread. Likewise, increasing internet bandwidth helps only when upload capacity or packet delivery is the constraint; it does not cure a CPU-bound warning.
Account for memory, saves and storage
Memory headroom
Keen’s 2025 FAQ reports about 4.4 GB of physical RAM at idle, up to 100 MB more per player and no more than 6 GB total physical RAM for the server. Those are server-process figures, not a recommendation to install only 6 GB in the machine. Keep enough RAM for the operating system, Steam, monitoring tools and other services. If available memory collapses during a session, close unnecessary workloads or move the server to a machine with more headroom before judging CPU changes.

Save frequency and file size
World saves are generated every five minutes. Keen says save files can range from roughly 1 MB to 100 MB, with large bases tending toward the upper end. Keep the world and log directories on the SSD, maintain free space beyond the 30 GB installation recommendation, and back up the world before changing configuration or updating the server.
A save that briefly increases disk activity is not proof of a failing CPU. Conversely, a nearly full or slow disk can make save-related pauses worse even when CPU and RAM look acceptable. Compare disk activity with the exact timestamp of the warning and keep several generations of backups so a damaged save is recoverable.

Keen’s 2026 FAQ says it partnered with GPORTAL to offer dedicated servers rentable from inside the game, while also stating that other providers can be used. Availability, geography, pricing and included resources change, so confirm those details before committing. Managed hosting reduces networking work but does not guarantee that an underspecified plan will handle a large base or a full slot count; ask what CPU is assigned and how world backups are retrieved.

A repeatable recovery runbook
- Stop and back up. Copy the world saves, logs and
enshrouded_server.json. Do this before deleting or regenerating configuration. - Reproduce with a known load. Test with the same number of players that produced the warning and record whether the issue is rubber-banding, a join failure or both.
- Compare the host with Keen’s baseline. For four to six players, check the 3.2 GHz six-core/12-thread, 16 GB RAM, SSD and 2 Mbit/s-per-player guidance. For up to 16 players, use the 3.7 GHz eight-core/16-thread target.
- Inspect per-core CPU and process memory. Do this while the warning is active. Leave operating-system headroom above the server’s reported roughly 4.4–6 GB physical-memory footprint.
- Reduce slots if compute or memory is tight. Edit
slotCountto a tested value between 1 and 16, restart and repeat the same test. - Regenerate invalid configuration. If the server will not boot or settings behave inconsistently after an update, replace the old JSON with a newly generated file and reapply documented keys.
- Verify reachability. Check query port 15637 unless you deliberately changed it, open the required Steam ports, inspect firewall and router forwarding, then apply Keen’s cache-clearing and DNS-flush steps when discovery is unreliable.
- Check storage and saves. Keep the server on an SSD with more than 30 GB free, watch the five-minute save events and retain backups, especially for worlds with large bases.
- Retest one variable at a time. Increase slots only after the lower setting is stable, and record the player count and symptoms for each test.
Common cases and the correct next move
The warning appears with low total CPU usage
Switch to a per-core view and watch the server process during the warning. A saturated simulation thread can coexist with low aggregate usage. If one core is consistently busy, lower slotCount or move to a processor with stronger per-core performance.
Players can join, but the world rubber-bands
Start with simulation measurements and the official player-count baseline. Check upload capacity at the same time; Keen’s planning figure is 2 Mbit/s per active player. If the host is below the CPU target or the configured population is high, reduce slots before changing network hardware.
The server cannot be found or joined
Treat this as a reachability branch first. Confirm query port 15637 or your chosen port, required Steam ports, firewall rules and router forwarding. Clear Steam’s download cache and flush DNS as Keen recommends. Do not infer a CPU overload from a discovery failure alone.
The problem began after an update
Back up the old JSON, let the server generate a fresh file if the existing one is stale or malformed, then reapply only documented settings. Test booting and joining before restoring the full slot count.
Warnings coincide with a large base or save event
Check disk activity and free space around the five-minute save interval. Large-base worlds can produce saves approaching 100 MB. Keep the save directory on the SSD and maintain backups, but continue checking CPU because storage improvements cannot supply missing simulation time.

There is no published CPU percentage or configuration change that guarantees a fix for every warning. Preserve logs, hardware details, player count, world size, timestamps and the steps already tested, then use Keen Games’ bug-report path. Community claims about a particular operating system, base design or compatibility layer should be treated as hypotheses to measure, not universal remedies.
