If your Xbox controller won’t connect or keeps disconnecting, start by checking its power, then test it with a compatible USB data cable. If it works wired, troubleshoot the wireless pairing path and host device; if it does not, check the cable, USB port and controller firmware before considering a hardware fault.
1. Check the controller’s power
Turn the controller off and back on. If it uses replaceable batteries or a removable rechargeable pack, install known-good batteries or charge the pack. Then test close to the console or PC.

If the controller uses a rechargeable pack, make sure it has charge; if it uses replaceable cells, check their orientation and condition. A power problem can look like a connection fault, so rule it out before changing pairing settings.

Connect the controller directly to the console or PC with a compatible USB data cable. Check the controller’s port before choosing a cable: supported controllers may use USB-C or micro-USB. - Does not work over USB: check that the cable supports data, try another compatible cable and USB port, and check for a firmware update. A failed wired test alone does not establish that the controller is defective.
3. Check for a controller firmware update
Update from an Xbox console
- Open Settings on the Xbox console.
- Go to Devices & connections, then Accessories.
- Select the controller and check for an available firmware update.
- If an update will not complete, disconnect accessories and try again. Power-cycle the console, then retry with a different USB cable connected firmly to the console and the controller. Allow several minutes for the update.
Xbox Support’s troubleshooting instructions describe these steps and recommend trying the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC if console updating fails. Update from a Windows PC
Connect the controller to the PC by USB and open the Xbox Accessories app. Microsoft’s instructions specify a USB-connected Xbox Wireless Controller for this app flow. 4. Pair it again with the device you intend to use
Console Xbox Wireless pairing and PC Bluetooth pairing are separate connection paths. Make sure you are following the steps for the right host, and check that the controller model supports the connection you want.
Pair with an Xbox console
Use the Pair control on the console and the controller, then follow the console’s on-screen instructions. If pairing does not finish, repeat the process with the controller close to the console after checking power.

Pair with a Windows PC over Bluetooth
- Confirm that your controller model supports Bluetooth. Bluetooth support varies by Xbox One controller model, so do not assume every Xbox One controller can connect this way.
- Turn on Bluetooth in Windows settings.
- Press the controller’s Pair button to put it into pairing mode.
- In Windows Bluetooth settings, choose the controller when it appears and complete pairing.
Microsoft describes Bluetooth connections for compatible controllers. 5. Identify whether the controller or host is causing the problem
Use a second compatible device or controller to narrow down where the fault may be. These checks are clues, not guaranteed diagnoses.

- Try the original controller with another compatible Xbox console or PC.
- Try a different controller with the original console or PC.
- If the original controller fails on multiple hosts and with a known-good data cable, while another controller works on the original host, a controller fault becomes more plausible.
- If multiple controllers have connection problems on one host, investigate that console or PC’s settings and connection path.
Before replacing a controller or arranging a repair, consult Xbox support or check the applicable warranty and service options.
