To improve performance in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered without needlessly degrading its image, first match the game’s upscaler and demanding effects to your hardware and display. Then adjust one costly setting at a time, comparing the same scene. There is no single best PC preset: resolution, GPU, settings, and what is happening in a scene all affect performance.

Start with the current edition and your target

This advice is for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released September 29, 2026. Its renderer and graphics options differ from older versions, so settings advice written for the 2022 Next-Gen edition may not describe the current build. CD PROJEKT RED lists Remastered for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2; existing owners can upgrade within the same platform ecosystem. See the official release notes.

Before changing anything, identify your platform and game build, output resolution, and goal. Decide whether a stable frame rate, higher resolution, or ray-traced lighting matters most. On PC, also note your GPU and which upscaling technologies it supports. A console mode choice is not directly comparable to a PC setting because the hardware and test conditions differ.

How to tune PC settings without losing more image quality than necessary

Choose an upscaler your GPU supports

Remastered’s PC renderer is native DirectX 12 with multithreading and includes enhanced shading and tone mapping, GTAO, ray-traced local shadows, updated screen-space reflections and shadows, and enhanced foliage. Its supported upscalers include NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4—including Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2—on Radeon RX 7000 series and newer, FSR 2 as a fallback on unsupported GPUs, and Intel XeSS 2.0 with Frame Generation and Low Latency. Check the current build and your GPU’s compatibility before choosing; the feature list does not establish one universally best option. The Remastered graphics notes describe support.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.

If image quality is the priority, start with the quality-oriented upscaling option at your intended display resolution. If performance still misses your target, test a lower render scale and compare clarity in the same scene. Upscaling is not a guarantee of identical image quality at every setting, so judge the result on your own display rather than assuming a preset is best.

Reduce ray tracing or path tracing only if they are the bottleneck

Ray tracing and path tracing are optional rendering costs, not prerequisites for a good-looking game. Remastered adds both, and the official PC requirements divide targets by hardware class; the ray-tracing and path-tracing configurations use an upscaler set to Auto, while the path-tracing configuration also uses Frame Generation. If these effects are keeping your system below its target, turn them off or reduce them before lowering unrelated image settings. Keep conventional rendering features that look good and run well on your hardware.

CD PROJEKT RED cautions that “Higher resolution will significantly affect FPS.” Its published targets are based on QA testing, can fluctuate with scene and gameplay, and vary with system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution. They are not a promise for every PC, and comparisons are meaningful only when your settings and upscaling conditions resemble the stated configuration. Read the updated PC requirements with those conditions in mind.

Make controlled changes and compare like for like

  1. Load a repeatable scene at your normal resolution and note frame rate, frame pacing, and visible image clarity.
  2. Change one demanding setting—such as the upscaler quality, ray tracing, or path tracing—without altering the others.
  3. Return to the same scene and compare the result. Keep the change only if it improves the performance problem without an unacceptable loss of clarity.
  4. Repeat only as needed. Avoid judging a change across different locations or gameplay, since scene complexity can affect performance.

This process helps identify which option is actually costly on your system; a fixed Ultra or High recipe cannot be called optimal without a benchmark on specified hardware.

PS5 Pro: choose the mode for your display and priorities

CD PROJEKT RED’s release notes say PS5 Pro Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and can reach 90 FPS on a VRR-capable display. Ray Tracing Mode targets 60 FPS, and PSSR is intended to improve fidelity without sacrificing performance. Choose Performance Mode if a higher ceiling and smoother motion are the priority and your display supports VRR; choose Ray Tracing Mode if you prefer its rendering trade-off. These are official mode targets, not a guarantee that every scene will hold a fixed rate. Details are in the official mode notes.

Fix stutter or low frame rates before buying hardware

For PC performance problems, CD PROJEKT RED’s general support guidance recommends a clean graphics-driver installation, verifying the game files, disabling overlays, and closing unnecessary applications. If the issue began after a driver update, the support page advises trying the previous driver version and reporting the problem. That article predates Remastered, so treat these as general diagnostics rather than fixes confirmed specifically for this edition. Follow the steps in CD PROJEKT RED’s performance troubleshooting guide.

The updated PC requirements also say an SSD is required to support the game’s technical enhancements, including faster loading and smoother asset streaming. An SSD may address storage-related loading or streaming issues, but the requirement does not establish that replacing adequate SSD storage will raise average FPS.

How to interpret vendor performance claims

NVIDIA describes path tracing as unifying lighting and rendering, while ray tracing improves selected effects. Its Remastered article reports up to 385 FPS at 4K on an RTX 5090 and up to 245 FPS on an RTX 5080 under Ultra+ path-traced settings with DLSS 4.5 6X Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction. Those are NVIDIA’s vendor claims for named hardware and a specific combination of features—not independent benchmarks or expected results for other PCs. See NVIDIA’s Remastered technology article for its stated context.
