If your Xbox Series X or Series S shows no light, sound, or response, first test the outlet and power cable, disconnect every accessory, and perform a complete power reset. If the console powers on but the TV shows “No Signal,” treat that as a display problem rather than a power failure. Do not open the console or buy a replacement power supply until you have checked warranty coverage.

This guide covers the Series X and Series S, including consoles that briefly start and shut down, reach an error screen, or appear dead.

Identify what “won’t turn on” means

What happens Likely category Start here
No light, sound, fan, or response Outlet, cable, accessory, power state, or internal hardware Test the outlet, remove accessories, then power-reset the console
Xbox light or fan starts, but the TV shows “No Signal” HDMI, TV input, or another display-path problem Check the HDMI connection and test another display
Logo appears, then startup fails Software or startup corruption Open the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter
Console turns on briefly and shuts off Power, heat, accessory, or internal hardware fault Remove accessories, check ventilation, and retry once
Controller will not turn on the console Controller battery or pairing issue Press the physical power button on the console

Series X and Series S have internal power supplies. They do not use the large external power brick supplied with some older Xbox models.

Stop immediately if there is electrical damage

Unplug the console and do not retry it if you notice smoke, a burning smell, scorching, melted plastic, liquid damage, unusual electrical noise, or a visibly damaged cable or socket. Do not open the console while it is connected to power. Internal power-supply and motherboard work should be left to qualified technicians, particularly while warranty coverage may still apply.

1. Check the outlet, power strip, and cable

  1. Disconnect the Xbox from any surge protector, extension cord, smart plug, UPS, or power strip for testing.
  2. Plug it directly into a known-good wall outlet.
  3. Test that outlet with a lamp, phone charger, TV, or another working device. Try a different wall outlet as well.
  4. Firmly reseat the power cable at both the console and the wall.
  5. Inspect the cable for cuts, bent contacts, looseness, scorching, or melted plastic. Do not use a visibly damaged cable.
  6. If available, test with a compatible, known-good replacement cable.

Bypassing a power strip is only a diagnostic step; it does not prove that the strip caused the failure. iFixit’s Series X no-power troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the outlet and cable.

2. Disconnect accessories and perform a full power reset

A USB hard drive, expansion storage device, charging cable, headset receiver, adapter, or another peripheral may complicate startup. Disconnect everything from the console before testing.

  1. Turn off the Xbox and unplug it from the wall.
  2. Remove every connected accessory, including USB devices, external storage, charging cables, headsets, and adapters.
  3. Leave the console disconnected for at least 10 seconds.
  4. Reconnect only the console’s power cable directly to a known-good wall outlet.
  5. Press the physical Xbox power button on the console.

This low-risk reset does not erase games or settings. If the Xbox starts, reconnect accessories one at a time. If it fails again after a particular device is attached, that device or its cable becomes a suspect—but the test does not prove it is defective.

Microsoft’s restart and power-cycle guidance and iFixit’s Series X troubleshooting instructions support this basic procedure.

3. Make sure it is not a display problem

If the Xbox logo lights, the fan runs, or you hear startup sounds, the console may be powered on even if the TV is blank. Do not diagnose a dead console solely from a black screen.

  1. Set the TV to the HDMI input used by the Xbox.
  2. Confirm the cable is connected to the Xbox’s HDMI OUT port.
  3. Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
  4. Try another HDMI input on the TV.
  5. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter, capture card, or adapter from the signal path.
  6. Try another known-good HDMI cable.
  7. If possible, test the Xbox on another TV or monitor.

HDMI troubleshooting is irrelevant when there is genuinely no light, sound, fan, or response. It is important when the console appears active but the display reports “No Signal.” See iFixit’s Xbox Series X troubleshooting index for the separate black-screen troubleshooting path.

4. Open the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter

Use this only if the console can produce startup tones or otherwise responds. It is not a solution for a completely lifeless console.

Xbox Series X

  1. Unplug the console for about 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
  2. Press and hold the Pair and Eject buttons.
  3. While holding both buttons, press the Xbox power button.
  4. Continue holding Pair and Eject until you hear the second startup tone, then release them.

Xbox Series S

  1. Unplug the console for about 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
  2. Press and hold the Pair button.
  3. Press the Xbox power button while continuing to hold Pair.
  4. Release Pair after the second startup tone if the troubleshooter appears.

The Series S has no disc drive and therefore has no Eject button. Do not use Xbox One instructions interchangeably with Series X/S instructions. Check Microsoft’s current startup-error support page if button timing or menu labels differ in your region.

5. Recover a console that reaches the troubleshooter

Choose the least-destructive option first:

  • Restart: Try this if it is offered and the console simply failed to boot normally.
  • Reset while preserving games and apps: Use this for suspected startup or software corruption when the option is available. You may still need to sign in again or restore settings.
  • Offline system update: Use it only with the current instructions and files from Microsoft. Do not rely on an old USB package or an unverified download.
  • Full factory reset: Reserve this for cases where other recovery methods fail. It can remove accounts, settings, and locally stored data, and it cannot repair a failed power supply or motherboard.

Repeatedly unplugging a console that already reaches the recovery environment is less useful than following Microsoft’s current startup-error recovery instructions.

6. If the Xbox turns on and immediately shuts off

A brief startup followed by shutdown can result from a temporary power-state fault, blocked ventilation, heat protection, a failing internal power supply, a shorted component, or a problematic accessory. The symptom alone cannot identify the failed part.

  1. Disconnect every accessory.
  2. Connect the console directly to a wall outlet.
  3. Let a recently overheated console cool completely before trying again.
  4. Make sure its vents are clear.
  5. Do not operate it inside an enclosed cabinet or directly against fabric.

If it repeatedly shuts down after these checks, treat the problem as a likely hardware fault rather than continuing to power-cycle it.

What the lights and sounds can tell you

There is no universal consumer-facing light-and-sound code table that can identify every Series X/S failure. Record the behavior instead:

  • Does the front Xbox logo light?
  • Does it remain lit or switch off?
  • Do you hear one startup sound, a second tone, repeated beeps, or a click?
  • Does the fan spin?
  • Does the TV detect an HDMI signal?
  • Does removing accessories change the behavior?

Flashing, clicking, or immediate shutdown are clues, not definitive diagnoses. A repairer may eventually identify an internal PSU, power circuitry, motherboard, power-button assembly, or thermal-protection issue, but those components cannot be reliably diagnosed from a symptom alone.

When to stop troubleshooting

Request service if there is still no response after checking the outlet, cable, accessories, and power reset; if the console repeatedly shuts down; if there is physical or liquid damage; or if a startup error persists after Microsoft’s recovery steps. Do not open the console or order an internal PSU before checking warranty status.

  1. Sign in to Microsoft’s device repair portal.
  2. Register the console if it is not already associated with your account.
  3. Check the warranty status for that specific device and market.
  4. Create a service order if eligible.
  5. Review the available repair, replacement, shipping, and service-center options.

Microsoft explains warranty lookup and service orders here. Service availability and outcomes vary by region, warranty status, device condition, and market; there is no single universal repair price.

Microsoft service, independent repair, or DIY?

  • Microsoft service: Usually the best first option for an in-warranty console and the safest route for suspected power or board failure.
  • Independent repair: May provide faster local diagnosis or component-level repair, but parts, workmanship, data handling, and guarantees vary.
  • DIY repair: Suitable only for experienced repairers who accept the risk of damage, electrical hazards, misdiagnosis, and warranty complications. Check the exact model and part compatibility before ordering.

Do not buy an Xbox One external power brick for a Series X or Series S. Do not buy a replacement PSU before ruling out the outlet, cable, accessories, and other causes. Microsoft’s Series S service guide and Digital Series X service documentation illustrate why internal repair is more involved than replacing an external brick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a bad HDMI cable make an Xbox look dead?

It can make a powered-on Xbox appear dead because the TV shows no picture, but it will not explain a console with no light, sound, fan, or response. Check the console’s power behavior separately.

Does the Xbox Series S have an Eject button?

No. The Series S has no disc drive. Its Startup Troubleshooter procedure uses the Pair button without an Eject-button step.

Should I use an Xbox One power brick with a Series X or Series S?

No. Series X and Series S use internal power supplies and are not designed for the external brick used by some older Xbox models.

Should I factory-reset an Xbox that will not boot?

Not as a first step. Use outlet, cable, accessory, power-reset, display, and Startup Troubleshooter checks first. A factory reset may affect accounts, settings, and local data, and cannot fix hardware failure.

Will Microsoft repair an out-of-warranty Xbox?

Service availability, charges, shipping, and replacement options vary by region and device condition. Check the device in Microsoft’s service portal for the options available to you.
